- About Plattsburgh
Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, at the foothills of the 6-million acre Adirondack Park, SUNY Plattsburgh offers easy access to a mecca of outdoor activities.
Students of all experience levels can try hiking the 46 high peaks of the Adirondack Mountains or any of the many smaller mountains that surround them. You can ski Whiteface Mountain, the venue of the 1980 Winter Olympics alpine skiing competitions, or take a bike ride along the Lake Champlain waterfront, which is just minutes from campus. During the warmer months, students can kayak, paddleboard or swim in its waters.
The magnificent autumn colors our region enjoys each fall semester can be viewed from anywhere in the Plattsburgh area. Student favorite outdoor recreational locations include Poko-O-Moonshine Mountain (22 miles from campus) and Point Au Roche State Park (10 miles from campus). Point Au Roche is a great place to take a nature walk or have a picnic. Freshmen can have cars on campus, making it easy to catch a ride to these locations with your friends!
There are also a wealth of other activities in the Lake Champlain Valley Region you can explore as a SUNY Plattsburgh student.
Another great option is the Odyssey Program, which provides incoming freshmen an opportunity to explore the region’s outdoors through hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and camping—all while meeting new friends before classes begin. Students stay in cabins at Twin Valleys Outdoor Recreation Center in the Adirondacks. Students of all skill levels are welcome.
The Admissions Office is located on the 10th floor of the Kehoe Building.
