SUNY Plattsburgh Mourns the Loss of Longtime Alumni Director and Employee Malcolm Lavery '64

Malcolm R. Lavery passed away all too suddenly on June 18, 2007, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Malcolm was born in Plattsburgh on Feb. 9, 1942, the son of Sylvester and Florence Lavery. Malcolm began his career at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1969 as an admissions counselor and retired in 1996 as the director of development and alumni affairs. For 24 years he was a beloved member of the professional staff and enjoyed a strong bond of friendship with many alumni and friends of the College. He had an undergraduate degree in teacher education and a master's degree in American history from SUNY Plattsburgh. He was instrumental in building a strong alumni program for his Alma Mater. In 1997, Malcolm joined Calkins Realty as a real estate broker.

Malcolm was very active in the community, serving on the Plattsburgh City School Board of Education for 14 years. He was appointed as a member of the Clinton Community College Board of Trustees in July 1996. At the time of his death, he was serving as secretary of the Board.

Malcolm is survived by his wife Diana; a son, John Lavery and his wife Janine; daughters Margaret (Maggie) Lavery and Katherine (Kate) Lavery; two grandchildren, Kiersten and Emma; two brothers and their wives, Ron and Joyce Lavery, Tom and Betsy Lavery; and several nieces and nephews. Malcolm's extended family included many close friends, Paul and Janet Dingman, Clara LaRose, Rose Anderson and others too numerous to name.

Malcolm's first love was family and friends. He loved people of all ages and had a sense of humor that was infectious. To be around Mal meant you were guaranteed a moment or two of laughter. His many hobbies included reading, hiking, running, hunting, golfing and canoeing.

Contributions may be made to The Plattsburgh College Foundation for the Malcolm R. Lavery Scholarship.
