Major In Expeditionary Studies (EXP) at SUNY Plattsburgh
Adventure Education in More Ways Than One
The major in Expeditionary Studies is a physical and intellectual adventure.
"Expeditionary skills are an emerging new core competency." The Center for Association Leadership
Expeditionary Studies teaches advanced skills in rock or ice climbing, backcountry skiing, and sea kayaking. EXP courses include materials from different disciplines, including history, leadership, land management, environmental science, ethics, and education.
You'll study the history of expeditions, select from courses in exploration, outdoor ethics, and environmental justice, or the culture of adventure.
You'll specialize in one of four adventure disciplines:
You'll supplement your growth with a selection of study options. And then you'll finish your degree with your own Senior Expedition, taking all you've learned to its obvious end-going out there and doing it!
What Can You Do With Expeditionary Studies?
Almost anything in the outdoor field!
Recent research identifies increasing employer expectations for outdoor workers to have professional training in combination with actual experience. This combination is at the core of our program. Also, according to U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, overall employment of recreation and fitness workers, of which recreation accounts for 62%, is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2010. And with over 16 million current participants in outdoor recreation, this field looks promising for highly trained and educated workers.
Check out Alumni Profiles to get an idea what some of our students have done already after integrating Expeditionary Studies into their own courses of study.
