Major in Medical Technology

What Is Medical Technology?

Medical Technologists are health-care professionals who carry out critical diagnostic testing in hospital and research laboratories. The Medical Technology Major prepares students for the 12-month clinical internship program in Medical Technology as part of a "3+1" four-year degree. This program is for students interested in careers in medical research, clinical laboratory analyses, and food or pharmaceutical industrial research.

Our Medical Technology Major Allows You To:

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Medical Technology (90 + 30 credits)

Students who are matriculated at Plattsburgh State University may select the Medical Technology major at any time prior to the internship year and should meet with the Medical Technology Program Coordinator as soon as possible. During their last year on campus, students apply to the Medical Technology clinical internship sites of their choice.

Acceptance to the clinical internship is competitive, and admission to Plattsburgh State does not guarantee placement in the clinical internship.

Those accepted spend 12 months in residence at the clinical training center where they follow a curriculum approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Students enrolled in the Medical Technology program have the flexiblity to complete their training in cytotechnology if they so desire. Many of our students also double major in Biology and minor in Chemistry .
