School of Business and Economics (SBE) Laptop Program FAQs

What software will I be using?

The machine should be capable of running the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Is any software optional?

Students can load any additional software, at their choice. There will be other software the SBE uses from time to time (for instance, Access) but the SBE does have a computer lab equipped with these programs for your use.

How will I be asked to use my laptop in SBE classes?

While not all courses will use the laptop in class, you will use laptops for classroom presentations, class projects, business simulations, and similar educational exercises. We also encourage students to buy online versions of their textbooks, when available, which usually can result in a savings of $50 to $75.

Will I use my laptop in class only or on my own time, too?

Part of your Information Technology (IT) experience is through regular usage. While we require a laptop of our students, it is not meant to be used solely for the purposes of your business courses.

Are the required specifications for hardware and software mandatory, or can I cut corners to save money?

We strongly recommend that you purchase a machine from one of the packages recommended by the campus. Should your machine breakdown, campus support services may be able to offer a faster turnaround time on repair for a standard unit than one might find via another, unsupported brand.  We have outlined basic recommended specs for your laptop. Please note that as the prices of Tablet PCs fall to the prices of laptops just a couple of years ago, more and more of our faculty and students are choosing the Convertible Laptop/Tablet PC because of their ability to recognize handwriting and annotate notes and slides.

What if I already own a laptop?

We do not wish to force an undue financial burden on anyone. If you already have a laptop, please make sure it meets the standard, minimum specs. Campus support services will do their best to help you in the event of a problem.

Are there any advantages to buying a laptop from Plattsburgh's College Store?

While you may find the price better for comparable machines and our are staff will be better able to support you. When buying a laptop, quality and support can be more important considerations than with a desktop as cost per component and repair can be higher. You can pay less for another system, but be sure to check the specs and compare. The campus can usually get a brand name machine at a very competitive price. We will also configure these bundles with components and warranties so the user has the best chance of being able to use this machine for at least four years. Regardless of where you purchase your machine, we recommend all laptops users sign up for our Cardinal Care Computer Service (CCCS) program so that our on-campus technicians can help you as much as possible.

Why do I need to have a laptop with these exact specifications?

The laptops must be compatible with the university wireless system and must be able to run business software that is typically written for Windows 2000 or XP. In addition, we use the Office Suite in our business applications class and thereon.

What if I can't afford to buy a laptop?

The Feinberg Library does offer a limited number of loaner laptops, but we hope that you do this only as a temporary solution.

Do I need an Apple or PC platform?

While some newer Apples run PC software, you will likely be better off with PC which is configured to run Windows.
