Major in Chemistry Education
Our Chemistry Education Major Allows You To:
- Prepare for a career teaching high school chemistry and science
- Be elegible to teach in New York State
- Learn educational theory and methods
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Chemistry Adolescence Education (7-12) (69 credits)
This program, sponsored by the Chemistry Department and the Department of Educational Studies and Services, is one of the options available to students who want to teach high school chemistry and science. (The other is to gain a B.A./B.S. in chemistry and then obtain a Master of Science in Teaching [M.S.T.] for teacher certification, or to apply to our new 5 year B.A./MST program). In addition to the General Education courses, the requirements include a 31 credit hour core of chemistry courses, an additional six credit hours in calculus, eight credit hours in physics, and four credit hours in biology or earth science. The 38 credit hour education component includes educational theory, methods and student teaching, as well as the advanced writing requirement.
Graduates of this program receive provisional certification to teach in New York State. Please see the Departments of Educational Studies and Services for more information about certification requirements.
