Audio-Radio/Digital Media Production Major

Audio-Radio Production Concentration

The Audio-Radio Production concentration develops your audio expertise to work in a wide variety of audio-related fields, including radio, TV broadcasting, music recording, and Internet applications. You acquire technical proficiency with digital audio tools, understand the theoretical concepts behind a variety of media, and learn what it takes to work in radio as a productions and promotions director, sales and operations manager, and disc jockey. You also develop the ability to create a variety of audio productions for specific audiences and experience the world of music recording through hands-on field recording of campus events.

Students get lots of airtime practice from day one.

On the radio side of this concentration, you have many opportunities to both learn and practice what's involved in this longest-running medium: radio. From day one you can join up with students across campus to broadcast the latest and greatest music to (yet) hit the airwaves as a member of WQKE, 93.9 FM--"The Quake." And on the academic side of things, you can build upon your experiences with the classroom-based, broadcast announcing class CMM209. This class is open to all Communication students and helps to introduce you to traditional radio environments. To develop your on-air skills you run weekly shows that are broadcast on our cable-access, tele-radio station WARP.

On the audio side of this concentration you get to develop your audio-production abilities in multiple arenas. Good audio is critical for radio, television, film, digital media, music recording, and the Internet. You can focus your efforts in any and/or all of these areas. Many students join the ATI Production team as a part of CMM408, the Field Recording Practicum. After acquiring the appropriate pre-requisites, these students develop music recording expertise by recording various musical concerts that are held on campus. Working in teams, students capture and post-produce CDs for area music directors.

Other students work closely with PSTV as audio specialists. Still more opportunities exist for students interested in digital audio archival. Working in conjunction with Plattsburgh State's Special Collections libraries, students capture, archive, and preserve recordings in a variety of different audio formats.

Digital Media Production Concentration

The Digital Media Production concentration teaches you how to use digital technology to create, manipulate, and effectively communicate information to intended audiences. Through building Websites, producing digital videos, and developing audio expertise, you explore rapidly developing technologies and prepare for the convergence of digitally produced media. You will be prepared to work in a variety of technology-driven fields including Website development, digital television, digital film, multimedia production, and online publications.

Digital Media Production is truly the convergence program in the Communication department. Students explore and develop their abilities with audio, video, and multi/digital media. Besides developing their own skills in each area, students often collaborate--bringing the best of all worlds center stage in their online efforts.
