Plaza studied theoretical mathematics with specialization in mathematical logic at the Warsaw University in Poland, and 1985 received M.S. with distinction in Mathematics. He started Ph.D. studies under the direction of Prof. Helena Rasiowa at the Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, then moved to New York, continued at CUNY under the direction of Prof. Melvin Fitting, and in 1990 received Ph.D. in Computer Science.

Prior to the appointment at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1997, he taught at the CUNY Lehman College in New York City and at the University of Miami in Florida.

In 1989 he published a paper “Logics of Public Communications” which laid foundation for dynamic epistemic logics — a specialized area of mathematical logic with applications to artificial intelligence. He was a co-organizer and researcher of a long term NSF project on construction of a programming language based on logic. He was also chair of the Fourth International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Symbolic Computation (AISC-1998).

His professional interests include mathematical logic with applications in math in computer science, algorithms, A.I., databases, and math and computer science education. His other interests include philosophy, history of science, hiking and backpacking, making photographs, reading, and listening to classical music.
