Internships
An Integral and Expected Part of Our Program
Each Intern has a Mentor, who is an experienced administrator and practitioner, who signs a contract agreeing to the requirements which comprise the experience. In most cases, this Mentor is your Building Principal or Assistant Principal, although this is not "cast in stone."
In addition, an Internship Supervisor will be assigned during each semester of the Internship. This highly experienced school leader will make periodic site visits to meet with you and your Mentor, in order to assess progress and/or needs.
Obviously, the perfect Internship experience is full-time, which provides candidates with a "24/7" view of the profession. However, in the vast majority of cases, this is not practical, and the Internship is mutually arranged so that the candidate is available before and after school, evenings, weekends, and at selected times during the school day to work on administrative tasks.
The Internship encompasses a minimum of two semesters. During each semester, there is a minimum hourly requirement of two hundred hours. You will have thirty-two specific competencies that must be successfully demonstrated and documented. In addition, a daily log of your experiences and reflections is maintained.
Internship Supervision
The Internship Supervisor will make personal contact with all Interns prior to the start of the semester. This contact will allow the Supervisor to set up a face-to-face meeting with the Supervisor, Intern and Mentor either before, or during the first week of the semester.
At this first meeting, the Supervisor will collect the signed Internship Contract form and will schedule the next face-to-face meeting. During each semester, it is expected that the Supervisor will complete a minimum of three additional site visits (not including the first face-to-face meeting). In addition to these site visits, the Supervisor remains available throughout the semester to provide assistance as needed, or as requested.
During the semester, it is expected that the Intern will e-mail the Supervisor of copy of his/her logbook each Friday afternoon for the preceding week. The logbook should be provided in Microsoft Word format. At the initial face-to-face meeting, the Supervisor will review expectations for how the logbook and professional portfolio should be organized. It is important to note that the Intern will be expected to submit their professional portfolio and logbook in entirety at the conclusion of the second Internship experience (EDA 530). Originals of these items need to be submitted and they will not be returned.
Internship Requirements
In order to begin an Internship, candidates must:
- have completed all, or at least seven of the eight required academic core classes;
- be in good academic standing;
- secure the approval of the mentor school administrator;
- sign a completed and approved internship agreement;
- follow the AASA Code of Ethics for School Administrators, and;
- have permission from the C.A.S. Program Director.
