Dr. Kleist teaches German language, literature, and civilization courses as well as courses in philosophy in the Honors Program. In addition to teaching, he enjoys creative writing.

- As editor he published seven volumes in the interdisciplinary series "Plattsburgh Studies in the Humanities":

- Volume 3: Re-Naming the Landscape (1994),
- Volume 4: Fin de Siecle: 19th and 20th Century Comparisons and Perspectives (1996),
- Volume 5: The Spoils of War: The Bright and Bitter Fruits of Human Conflict (1997),
- Volume 6: War and its Uses: Conflict and Creativity (1998),
- Volume 7: Canada Observed: Perspectives from Abroad and from Within (2000).
- He has published also scholarly articles as well as several short stories and poems in journals, literary magazines, and anthologies. Currently he is writing screenplays.
