Journalism: Newspaper Major
The newspaper journalism major prepares students for jobs as newspaper reporters, editors, and page designers. While the program contains a large practical component with hands-on courses in news, reporting, copy editing, page layout, and desktop publishing, it also contains a strong theoretical component in courses that teach press history, ethics, and law. Students take newspaper-specific courses in which they
- write articles on speculation for the Press Republican , Plattsburgh's daily newspaper
- work as reporters, photographers, section editors, copy editors, page designers, editorial cartoonists, graphic artists, and advertising designers for Cardinal Points
- design camera-ready publications for a variety of intended audiences

Journalism: Magazine Major
The magazine journalism major prepares students for jobs as magazine writers and editors. The major is also designed to teach students to examine the economic and social role of magazines in the context of today's communication environment. Students learn the writing, editing, production, and business of magazines. Students take magazine-specific courses in which they
- write queries and articles on spec for consumer magazines
- work as writers, editors, photographers, and designers for the All Points North online magazine (www.apnmag.com )
- design a magazine of their own
- analyze current magazine markets

Add a minor to develop your area of specialization

Policy on academic dishonesty
Morality is essential for journalists. Using someone else's work without attribution is a serious ethical breach. Plagiarism and all other forms of academic dishonesty in a class will result in a failing grade for that class. In addition, expulsion from the journalism program will be recommended for students who plagiarize in articles intended for publication.
