Leadership Program Faculty - Dr. E. Thomas Moran

Distinguished Service Professor
Director of the Institute for Ethics in Public Life


Dr. Thomas Moran is the founding Director of the Institute for Ethics in Public Life at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, where he also holds an academic appointment as a Distinguished Service Professor.

From 1989 to 1998 he was the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Plattsburgh. In 1998 he left that position to establish the Institute and teach. He later served as the Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the College, from December of 2006 through August of 2007.

From 2002-04 he co-directed a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities on civic responsibility, in conjunction with the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth College, where he held an appointment as a Visiting Scholar in the spring of 2004. He is the author of numerous publications, reports, papers and grant proposals.

Among other activities, Dr. Moran has served on advisory councils for state and national higher education organizations. He has received a number of awards including the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service (1988), the Phi Eta Sigma Outstanding Faculty Award (2001), and the Student Association Outstanding Service Award (2004). In 1998, he was elected as a Fellow of the National Society for Values in Higher Education.
