Nursing Faculty - Zoanne Burgess Schnell, Ph.D., RN
Professor and Chairperson
Dr. Schnell received a B.S. in Nursing from Plattsburgh State University of New York and holds an M.S. in Nursing in Child Psychiatry from Wayne State University
and a Ph.D. from the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, School of Social Welfare,
State University of New York at Albany. She has taught at Plattsburgh State University of New York, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and the University of Vermont, currently teaching pediatric nursing, nursing research, and health care delivery.
Besides nursing education, Dr. Schnell has practiced in community, pediatric, and mental health nursing. In addition, she has served as clinical and research consultant to a number of child health and substance abuse prevention programs. Dr. Schnell has participated in grant-funded activities to bring educational experiences to local social service, head start, and similar employees focused on empowerment-based strategies in providing family services.
She and Dr. Richard L. Schnell, Counselor Education Department, have developed several externally funded grants, co-authoring research assessment instruments, carrying out prevention research, and writing research reports. Some of these activities have been shared with undergraduate and graduate students, providing them with opportunities for grass-roots involvement in research efforts. Dr. Schnell has been an invited presenter at several national and regional conferences.
Dr. Schnell is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society in Nursing and Phi Kappa Phi, a multidisciplinary honors/leadership society, and New York State Nursing Association, District #8.
In her spare time, Zoanne likes to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and activities of the North Country, travel, read, and spend time with friends. She and her husband live in an old former Inn on Lake Champlain and are the proud parents of three sons, all consumers of the State University of New York education system.
