Careers in Physics and Engineering

Physics Is the Basis for Much of the Modern World We Live In

Most people think of Academics when they hear the word "Physics." They think of people like Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Marie Curie. But the fact is that physics is much, much more than that. You are surrounded by the work of physicists and engineers (who apply physics) every day. As a matter of fact, the computer you are reading this on is the result of the study of electronics through both experiment (by physicists) and design (by engineers). We may all think "Space Shuttle" when we think about physics and engineering, but what about your car (and the roads and bridges you drive your car on), your I-pod, CD's, DVD's, and on and on--the examples are endless. All are based on principles developed by physics which were later used by engineers to design and produce our modern technology. Physics is the world, and careers opportunities in physics and engineering are just as broad.

At SUNY Plattsburgh, we help you to develop the skills you will need for that successful career in physics, engineering or teaching.

The Main Requirement Is a Love of Problem Solving

Do you like to tackle problems through researching the problem, determining a solution, and then designing and building the technology needed to impliment the solution?

Then physics and engineering is for you. To get an idea of all the applications of physics and engineering in today's world, try going to the sites below and explore--you may be very surprised. Enjoy!

Interested in physics, but not sure what you could do with it? Visit the American Institute of Physics Careers and learn about all the great opportunities for careers in Physics. The American Physical Society is another great source of information regarding careers in Physics.

More interested in engineering, but don't know where to look? Try the U.S. Department of Labor Engineering to learn all about careers in Engineering.
