Gerontology Minor

About the Gerontology Minor

The minor in gerontology at SUNY Plattsburgh is for students considering careers in the field of aging, those whose future careers may include some contact with older adults, and who simply have an interest in learning more about the fastest growing component of our population. The minor is interdisciplinary in nature and is administered by the Psychology Department and the Center for Intergenerational Studies and Programs. Students are exposed to a variety of disciplines and perspectives related to the study of aging.

The Gerontology Minor may be paired with any major available on our campus. Knowledge about aging, older adults, and our rapidly aging society is relevant to almost every area of study. However, we specifically encourage students in the fields of Psychology, Nursing, Social work, and other health and human services oriented programs to take advantage of this opportunity.

The program consists of 3 foundation courses that provide an interdisciplinary perspective on the processes of aging. Elective courses offer a further concentration in the area of aging. The electives allow students to select courses that reflect their interests and career objectives. Lastly, an internship offers students an opportunity to apply what they have learned and to develop professional relationships with others in the field of aging. The Gerontology Minor coordinator will assist students in locating a proper area of internship associated with their interests and their to-be-developed expertise.
