Sociology Faculty - Ilene Leshinsky

Adjunct Lecturer

I'd like to introduce myself to you. My name is Ilene Leshinsky. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R) which means I am licensed as a psychotherapist in New York State and I have had over thirteen years of counseling experience working especially with women. After eleven years of working at Clinton County Mental Health Clinic as a therapist and as the Clinic Coordinator, I opened a private psychotherapy practice in July 2008. My office is located at 159 Margaret Street, Suite 300 in Plattsburgh.

I graduated from Boston University School of Social Work specializing in counseling adults and in group work. I love working with women of all ages (including adolescents). It's not easy being a woman in today's world with multiple demands on our time and energy. I'm gratified when I can help women learn to carve out time for themselves, to enhance their lives and their interactions with loved ones. It's amazing how depression lifts and anxiety lessens when we learn to value and take care of ourselves.

Also, women come to me who are struggling with weight, eating and body image. I developed a twelve week, psycho-educational program called BodySense to assist women in normalizing their eating and in developing a kinder relationship with their body. Some women come into counseling because they need help with their relationships or because they are experiencing the repercussions of childhood or adult trauma.

Finally, I love to teach, which is why I am an adjunct lecturer at SUNY Plattsburgh. It is important to me to inform students that mental illness is real, not something that people can just get over by snapping their fingers, and that so many people with mental illness can lead highly productive and fulfilling lives.
