Sociology Faculty - Dr. Tony Poveda

Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice

Since 1970 Dr. Poveda has taught sociology and criminal justice courses at SUNY Plattsburgh where he currently holds the rank of professor. In recent years his primary teaching areas have been in criminal justice, especially courses in Selected Issues in Criminal Justice, Introduction to Criminology, White-Collar Crime, and a seminar on wrongful convictions and the death penalty. He has also been active in department governance, having served as department chair and coordinator of the Criminal Justice Program. In addition, he serves on college-wide and community committees, like the President's Advisory Committee on Personal Safety and the Clinton County Local Conditional Release Commission.

Currently, Dr. Poveda's research and writing interests center on wrongful convictions and the death penalty, but he has a continuing interest in the F.B.I. and civil liberties issues along with the broad topic of white-collar crime.

Dr. Poveda is often called upon by colleagues, policymakers, and the media as a resource/consultant in his areas of research expertise. Although too numerous to mention, some recent examples include: an analyst with the Florida legislature in 2003 sought insight on the problem of estimating wrongful convictions (a Florida Senate committee was examining the issue of post-conviction D.N.A. testing); in 2001, a staff member of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee sought input on F.B.I. oversight (the committee was concerned with F.B.I. scandals of the late 1990's); and Diarmuid Jeffreys, a British documentary film maker, consulted during the development of his two-part series, "Inside the F.B.I.," which aired on PBS in 1994. Also, in the recent past, journalists from the national media (including New York Times, MSNBC, and Fox News) have called upon Dr. Poveda for his views on various F.B.I. controversies.
