University of Deusto Summer Spanish Language and Culture Program

Why Deusto?

This program is a wonderful opportunity if you would like to learn Spanish and visit some of Spain's major cities. Excursions play an important part of the summer program. The city of Bilbao is major city on the coast with beaches, but offers a more authentic experience than some of Spain's more known tourist cities.

  • Terms: 5 weeks summer (end of June thru end of July).
  • Eligibility: open to all students currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university; minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Credits: 7 undergraduate.
  • Application deadline: March 15

Courses at Deusto

The program is worth seven credits in Spanish. Everyone takes a four-credit Spanish language course and a three credit content course. Upon arrival, you will take a language proficiency exam to determine your level of proficiency of Spanish and which class you will be placed for the Spanish course. You may choose between living in Deusto's residence halls or living with a host family that the University of Deusto selects. Both options are subject to availability. You can find more information on Deusto's website.


Bilbao has one of the cleanest and most efficient metro systems in Europe. In just forty minutes the visitor can travel from downtown Bilbao to the nearby lush green Basque coast. Transportation is easy and affordable in Spain. The location of Bilbao is a major plus, since the Cote Basque in Southern France in just about an hour from Bilbao. World-class tourist sites like Biarritz, San Sebastian and Pamplona (where the San Fermin festivals are held every July) are close by. The Basque Country is famous for the high quality of its food. Major European cities like Madrid and cultural heritage sites like Toledo are on the itinerary. So students will get to know some of the most important cities in Spain. Summer weather in Northern Spain is mild.
