Why NOLS?
NOLS is an independent institution from SUNY Plattsburgh that provides programs across the world focused on outdoor skills, leadership, and environmental studies. It has been in business since 1965 and boasts more then 75,000 alumni. Through an agreement with NOLS, SUNY Plattsburgh's Expeditionary Studies program will grant credit for completing a NOLS program and academic assignments arranged between you and the department. NOLS's programs offer excellent opportunities for Expeditionary Studies majors especially, but also apply to anyone who want "hands on" experience in outdoor skills.
- Terms: Fall, Spring, Summer
- Language of Instruction: English
- Eligibility Requirements: SUNY Plattsburgh students only; minimum 2.5 GPA; permission of Professor Soroka, chair of Expeditionary Studies
- Credit: Expeditionary Studies 304, 3-15 credits (as determined between Professor Soroka and you)
- Application Deadlines: October 1 for Spring, March 14 for Summer and April 1 for Fall
How to Apply
You must submit BOTH the SUNY Study Abroad Application and NOLS Application in paper form to the SUNY Plattsburgh Global Education Office by the deadlines stated above. Include two separate applications fees for each one - $35 for the SUNY application fee (made payable to SUNY Plattsburgh) and $65 for the NOLS application fee (made payable to NOLS). We will forward your application to NOLS identifying you as a SUNY Plattsburgh student. If you do not follow this process, expect confusion later on! (Note: the 85.3kb SUNY Application PDF file requires the latest version of Acrobat Reader, which is available as a free download.)
How to Get Credit for NOLS
Well in advance of the application deadlines, you should meet with Professor Soroka to discuss the program you are considering, its length, how much credit you can earn from your program and the work you must submit to him to receive credit and a grade. Making these arrangements are your responsibility. The course for which you will receive credit for is Expeditionary Studies (EXP) 304, and you can earn between 3 and 15 credits. EXP 304 is a SUNY Plattsburgh course, so the grade will appear on your transcript and will be calculated into your GPA.
Locations
NOLS's programs are located across the world, and their offerings do change regularly. For the most current list of programs, dates and details, you should consult NOLS's website.
Payment Procedures and Cost Estimates
SUNY Plattsburgh will bill you for your NOLS program, however NOLS sets the prices. SUNY Plattsburgh will add a $350 Semester Abroad Fee to the total cost of your NOLS program. You will be billed according to SUNY Plattsburgh's normal semester billing cycles, and your total NOLS program fee will appear split between SUNY tuition and a Semester Abroad Fee. For example, if NOLS's price is $10,000 and SUNY NYS resident tuition is $2175, your SUNY Plattsburgh will read SUNY tuition $2175 and Semester Abroad Fee $8175 for a total of $10,350.
You may find NOLS's prices on their website.
