Why Chicoutimi?
Chicoutimi has one of the highest concentrations of native French-speakers in North America, making it the most ideal setting for those of you are serious about being immersed in the French language to become fluent. The Language and Quebec Culture School at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi has a long relationship with SUNY Plattsburgh, and several other institutions in the US.
- Terms: Fall (August thru December) and Spring (January thru April)
- Eligibility: open to all US college and university students; minimum sophomore standing at the time of participation; minimum 2.7 GPA.
- Credits: 15 undergraduate credits in French only
- Application Deadlines: October 1 for Spring; March 15 for Fall
How to Apply
You must submit the SUNY Application by the deadlines stated in the above section. You will also have to submit a Chicoutimi Application online later on, but we will tell you when and how. You may download the SUNY Application from our website, or e-mail us at globaleducation@plattsburgh.edu. (Note: the 85.3kb SUNY Application PDF file requires the latest version of Acrobat Reader, which is available as a free download.)
Courses at Chicoutimi
The Semester French Program at Chicoutimi is worth 15 undergraduate credits in French language courses. When you arrive, you will take a placement exam with other students, which is meant to group you into classes with others who have similar French proficiency as you. For a list of course descriptions, please visit Chicoutimi's website:
Accommodations
The only type of arranged accommodations available for the French Semester Program is home stays. If you do not want to live with a local family, then you will have to look for an apartment in Chicoutimi on your own. Unfortunately, SUNY Plattsburgh and Chicoutimi cannot help you find an apartment. If you do choose a host family, then Chicoutimi will put you in contact with a local family. You will pay for room and board directly to the family, and not through SUNY Plattsburgh or Chicoutimi.
Location
Chicoutimi is the third largest city in Quebec, with a population of about 80,000 people. It is located approximately two hours by car north of Quebec City, or six hours north east of Plattsburgh by car. The region is known for its rugged beauty and wilderness. The nearby Lake St. Jean and Saguenay fjords, especially, attract thousands of tourists annually. Our students have always found Chicoutimi and its people to be warm, friendly and eager to share their language and culture with them.
