About Quebec's Universities
As a SUNY student you may exchange for a semester or a year to any of Quebec's many universities, most of which are French-speaking. The three English-speaking universities in Quebec are: McGill, Concordia, and Bishop's Universities.
In order to attend one of the French-speaking universities, you must understand that the courses will be in native-level French and you will have to perform at that level. In many ways, this complete immersion is the best way to become bilingual. However, if you feel you do not quite yet have enough French to study in French at this level, but still want to study in Quebec for a full semester, you should consider the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi's Semester French Program.
- Terms: Fall Semester, Spring Semester, and Academic Year
- Language of Instruction: French or English
- Eligibility Requirements: be a SUNY student; minimum junior standing; minimum 3.0 GPA and have a minimum of five semesters of French for French language universities.
- Credits: 12-15 undergraduate
- Application Deadline: March 15 (Quebec universities only admit students once a year, so you must apply by this date the year before you want to go for Fall or Spring Semesters or for the entire year.
How to Apply
Applying to the SUNY-CREPUQ exchange is a bit different. You must submit a SUNY Application, and you must also apply to the institution you attend. You send both applications to Plattsburgh, and then we must nominate you to the host institution and then forward them your application to their institution. If you are considering a Quebec school, please e-mail to tell us which schools you are interested in so that we can forward you their application. (Note: the 85.3kb SUNY Application PDF file requires the latest version of Acrobat Reader, which is available as a free download.)
Students who wish to study at McGill or Concordia should be aware that admission to these institutions is highly selective and that not everyone is admitted. As well, due to the number of applications they receive, you will not receive a decision until the middle of June. If you cannot wait that long, then you should not apply to either of these two schools.
Locations
The locations of Quebec's universities span the province. Some are found in very urban settings such as Montreal, Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres, Chicoutimi, and Sherbrooke, while others are in rural or distant locations such as Rimouski or Lennoxville. However, no matter which one you are considering, you can be assured that you will be in one of the world's most interesting settings. Nature and beauty are everywhere, and while you may feel you are not going far from home before departure, you will soon realize once there how culturally different and special Quebec is from the North American continent. You can find a list of Quebec's universities and links to their websites is available at CREPUQ Student Exchange Programs (SEP).
Housing
Each university's housing situation differs significantly. Some universities have on-campus housing and others do not. And still, while some have on-campus housing, they may not have any formal meals plans such as we have in the United States. The ones that do offer housing might have very limited space and not be able to accommodate everyone, especially those who are only coming for a semester. Most American students and their parents tend to want on-campus housing, and feel the university is obliged to accommodate them. Such practices and feelings are not common outside of the United States. If you or your parents feel this way, then we highly advise that you spend time looking closely at what each institution offers and ask yourself if you are ready to follow through with the program by finding off-campus accommodations if you do not get what you want.
