Theatre Faculty - Phillip Cole

Adjunct Lecturer

Phillip H. Cole is native of the mecca city of Jazz - New Orleans - and is an American citizen and Canadian resident. Phillip is a graduate of Wilberforce University in Ohio, and in 1969 won the first Louard Scholarship of the United States, which enabled him to pursue his academic studies, as well as his interest in dance and theater in the United Kingdom. He studied at the London Dance Center and the Choreographic Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, as well as with elite artists such as Luigi, Phil Black, and Gus Giordano. While in England, Phillip created The Reading University Jazz Dance Workshop in Birkshire, England.

Upon his return to the U.S., Phillip taught at Antioch College in Ohio, then Federal City College in Washington, D.C.  He then performed with the great dance legend Katherine Dunham in the National Wolftrap Production Company in Tremonisha. A move to New York City prompted Phillip to act in numerous Off-Broadway productions. His strong creative desire inspired his return to his second home at that time in Washinton, D.C. where he founded his own dance company, The Cole Harrison Dance Company, which performed his choreographic works throught the U.S. and abroad.

In 1977, Phillip came to Montreal with an invitation to join the dance company of Ballet Jazz de Montreal from its founder, Eva Von Gensy. One year later, Phillip became the co-owner and co-artistic director of his own dance school in Montreal, The Dance Factory Inc., for sixteen years. The school specialized in Jazz, Classical Ballet, Tap, Modern Dance, and African Dance.

Phillip has been involved with the SUNY family (State University of New York) for more than fifteen years. Starting as a guest teacher for the Adirondack Jazz Dance Theater in the early 80's, he has continued his association with the university as Adjunct Lecturer Professor and is currently in his sixth year at the university. Phillip has taught all of the Theater Dance courses at the university, such as Movement Studies, Dance and the Creative Process, Dance Technique, and Bar Technique (levels A & B), and has directed the Theater Dance Group. He also continues to direct the Summer Safari Dance Program for Children.

As an actor, Phillip has managed to continue performing in theater in productions such as The Death of Bessie Smith, Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope, Eubie, and Fool Blast. As a full member of A.C.T.R.A. (Association of Canadian Television, Film and Radio Artists), his recent film credits include The Human Stain, The Jackie Gleason Story, and the recent Shattered Glass.
