Frequently Asked Questions About College Credits  at SUNY Plattsburgh

Will Plattsburgh accept the college credit I earned in high school?

Yes. SUNY Plattsburgh routinely accepts credits that students have earned at accredited Colleges. We also transfer credits earned through Advanced Placement (AP), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and courses taught in a high school that are certified by an accredited College; these include Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) and SUNY Albany foreign language courses. Credit is awarded once an official score report or transcript is received and a sufficient passing grade is met, as deemed by the Admissions Office.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

SUNY Plattsburgh welcomes credit earned through the International Baccalaureate program.  For students who have earned an IB Diploma, SUNY Plattsburgh will award 30 credits of lower-division liberal arts courses.   The specific credit awarded is determined by the student's individual record.  For those students who have not earned the IB diploma, we will award credit for Higher Level (HL) courses with an earned score  of '4' or higher. To be considered, the Admissions Office will need an official score report.

While we do not award credit for Standard Level (SL) examinations, students who have earned a score of '4' or better on a foreign language B SL exam will be exempt from the foreign language requirement.

Courses Earned through Other Institutions

Finally, Plattsburgh will accept college-level credit that is completed through a partnership with a College or University. Examples of this program include the Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA), the SUNY foreign language program through the University at Albany, and courses administered through local community colleges. Though specific requirements may dictate that a course cannot transfer, for the most part, courses that are passed will be awarded credits. To receive the credit, Admissions will need an official transcript from the College or University that can usually be obtained by contacting the registrar's offices at the school.

To see how credits from a CUNY or SUNY Community College or Technical School transfers into SUNY Plattsburgh, please go to the following page: http://banweb.cc.plattsburgh.edu/pls/banprd/transfer.colleges
