How many transfer students enroll each year?
Plattsburgh annually enrolls about 800 transfer students (along with about 1000 freshmen). Of the transfer students, 600 will enroll for the fall semester and 200 for the spring semester.
When should I apply as a transfer student?
The best time to apply for transfer admission is October through March, if you are seeking admission for the fall semester. If you are seeking spring admission, you should apply September through November. We will need your official transcript including the most recent completed semester.
How do I apply as a transfer student?
To apply as a transfer student, use the SUNY Application Viewbook, available from our office or your college transfer office. You can also apply on-line . Please note: Your official transcript(s) should be forwarded directly to the Plattsburgh State University Admissions Office, 101 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
When do I receive my admissions decision as a transfer applicant?
Admissions decisions are based on your completed application and official transcript(s). For the fall semester, acceptance packets are mailed mid-January and continue on a rolling basis until we close admission (usually late summer). For the spring semester, acceptance packets are mailed beginning November 1st and continue on a rolling basis until admission closes in early January.
Are interviews required for transfer applicants?
Interviews are not required for admission, but they are strongly encouraged. A visit is one of the best ways to learn about the opportunities available at Plattsburgh State University. Often transfer students have questions about their credit evaluation and their major. Some students schedule a visit with the chairperson of their academic department, as well.
What are the entrance requirements for transfer applicants?
Admission decisions for transfers are based upon the review of the content of the courses you've completed and your cumulative grade-point-average. A minimum GPA of 2.3 is recommended for admission. A 2.5 GPA, however, is required for all education majors, as well for Communication Disorders and Sciences, Nursing, and Social Work. If you have completed fewer than two semesters of college work (24 college credits) at the time of application, we will also require your high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores.
Will my credits transfer? What is the maximum number of credits that can transfer?
One out of every two Plattsburgh State graduates entered the college as a transfer student, so we understand transfer issues. If you are transferring from an accredited college, you should not have trouble with your transfer credits. However, sometimes we do not accept some technical subjects, like automobile repair, construction technology, or secretarial courses. Once a transfer course is accepted, the course is placed based upon its content, its level, and if it has the appropriate prerequisites. Credit evaluations are completed during the admissions process. Plattsburgh will accept 67 credits from a two-year college and 84 credits from a four-year college.
Can I have my credits evaluated before I pay my tuition deposit?
You can request to have your transcripts evaluated at any time. Set up an interview with us if at all possible. We will need the transcripts from all the colleges you have attended.
Will I get the courses I need?
Once we know you plan to enroll as a transfer (usually by the receipt of your tuition deposit), the chairperson of your department will pre-register you into your first semester courses. The chairperson reviews your credit evaluation and notifies the Registrar of the courses you need. At Transfer Student Orientation & Registration, you will have an opportunity to make any needed adjustments.
What scholarships are available for transfer students?
Plattsburgh State University Transfer Scholarships are available to two-year college graduates and junior-level transfers from other colleges (not available for SUNY four-year college transfers). Transfer Scholarships are: Transfer Achievement (3.50+ GPA), $500, Transfer Housing (3.50+ GPA), $500. The scholarships are for full-time students and the GPA is calculated at the time of admission. If you have attended more than one college, a cumulative GPA will be calculated.
