Graduate Admission Requirements
Admission to graduate study at SUNY Plattsburgh is based on the academic and personal qualifications of applicants and is granted without regard to race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or handicap.
Graduate programs are administered by their respective academic departments and deans' offices. The decision to accept or deny an applicant resides within these departments.
General Admission Requirements
While each graduate program has its own requirements, prospective students applying for matriculation into a Master's Degree or Certificate of Advanced Study Program at SUNY Plattsburgh will need the following:
1. A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited institution (C.A.S./Educational Leadership candidates will also need a Master's Degree.)
2. A grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (Consult each program for its grade point requirement. No graduate programs at SUNY Plattsburgh accept an undergraduate grade point average below 2.5. It is not possible to raise your grade point average after you have finished your undergraduate degree.)
3. Satisfactory scores on an admission test:
- The School Psychology Graduate Program and all Education Graduate Programs DO NOT require an admission test.
- All programs will accept the Graduate Record Exam (G.R.E.).
- Some programs will also accept the Miller Analogies Test (M.A.T).
- The Leadership Program will accept the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
4. Education program candidates must submit a copy of their teaching certificate (except M.S.T. which does not require prior provisional certification). Individuals who have not yet received their teaching certificate must submit a written explanation indicating how all NYSED requirements (including NYSTCE exams) for such a certificate will be completed prior to matriculation into this M.S.Ed. program. Individuals must submit passing scores on the NYSTCE exams before matriculation into the program.;
5. An Application for Admission to Graduate Study (obtained from the Graduate Admissions Office) that includes:
- Statement of Purpose describing your purpose in pursuing graduate work, your professional aims and your career goals.
- Three Letters of Recommendation indicating your ability to pursue graduate work. (Applicants to the Speech-Language Pathology Program utilize a different recommendation form.)
- Non-refundable $75 (U.S. dollars) Application Fee.
6. Students whose native language is not English must submit official documentation of their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. Required score: 550 or above (paper-based); 79-80 or above (internet-based); or 213 or above (computer-based).
7. International students must provide official documents to prove that they have enough money to pay for their education, estimated at $24,000 per year.
Be Sure and Remember:
- Some degree programs have additional admission requirements or require supplemental materials. The Literacy Education Program requires an artifact and a Literacy Questionnaire. Please consult the Literacy website for more information: http://web.plattsburgh.edu/academics/education/literacy/master.php The M.S.T. Programs require applicants to turn in an M.S.T. Preparatory Worksheet as part of their application packet. For information about the Preparatory Worksheets, consult the Directions for Applying to the M.S.T. Programs.
- Some degree programs require personal interviews, including M.S.T. Childhood Education, M.S.T. Adolescence Education, Literacy Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Mental Health Counseling , School Counselor, Student Affairs/Professional Practice, Speech-Language Pathology, and School Psychology. The graduate program faculty will contact you if they have decided to invite you to an interview. Many programs have set their interview dates. Please contact Graduate Admissions if you want to reserve the date in your calendar.
- Programs that require an interview will not accept late applications.
- Some degree programs require a grade point average above a 2.5. See the specific program requirements.
- The Application for Graduate Admission, the Graduate Catalog, and the Program Profile Brochures provide information on specific requirements. You may also contact the appropriate department chair or program coordinator.
