About Plattsburgh State
Overview
State University of New York at Plattsburgh is a comprehensive institution of higher education offering programs at the Bachelor and Master degree levels in over 60 areas of study.
We are a four-year, liberal arts university with approximately 6000 students (including about 300 international students) and about 300 faculty members.
Most undergraduates at Plattburgh live on campus in one of 12 residence halls open for most of the calendar year. Housing is available for students attending classes during the summer. International students are encouraged to live on campus because of Plattsburgh's affortable on-campus housing rates and academic atmosphere.
Home to students from around the world, the State University of New York at Plattsburgh is the ideal university for students from outside the United States.
A Safe Campus
Naturally, safety is a concern for international students considering studying at State University of New York at Plattsburgh.
The University has its own law enforcement department, the University Police, with officers trained in campus law enforcement and safety.
With one of the lowest campus crime rates in the nation, SUNY Plattsburgh is a place where you can feel safe.
Personal Safety
A computerized, keyless entry system monitors exterior doors in every residence hall and reports problems to the University Police. Police officers are accessible from anywhere on campus through blue light emergency phones and phones in the entrance of every building on campus.
The campus is regularly patrolled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year by officers on foot, bicycle, and in patrol cars. The University Police also provides personal escorts to students around campus 24 hours a day upon request. Crime prevention programs are regularly presented to students in residence halls and other settings.
The University Police work closely with all members of the campus community as well as the Plattsburgh City Police and other local law enforcement agencies to ensure that our campus and students are as safe as possible.
A Small City In Upstate New York
The location of State University of New York at Plattsburgh contributes to its students' unique experience.
Plattsburgh, NY is an active community of about 40,000 people situated on the shore of Lake Champlain, a United Nations designated biosphere.
Cultural Diversity and Activities
Our location is an asset. Within easy reach of our campus are such destinations as:
- Burlington, Vermont , a beautiful city also on Lake Champlain, and a center for arts and culture;
- New York City is located 550 KM south;
- Historic Boston, Massachusetts is easily accessible as well, located just 4.5 hours southeast of Plattsburgh.
- Lake Placid , host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic games;
- Adirondack State Park and the High Peaks region. Whiteface Mt. and Mt. Marcy are favorite destinations of hundreds of Plattsburgh students each year.
Easy Access to an International Environment
Montreal, Canada is one hour north of Plattsburgh (100km), and offers SUNY Plattsburgh students a broad range of diverse and stimulating cultural events and activities.
Montreal is the largest french-speaking city outside of France, and home to world class theater, museums, and cultural experiences. Many of our students take advantage of our proximity to Montreal.
