How much will it cost me to attend as an international student?

For the 2007-2008 academic year, the total billed cost for an international student living on campus (including tuition, room, board, fees, and health insurance) will be about $21,880 USD. In addition, there will be unbilled costs for items such as books, clothing, phone bill, etc. International students should be prepared to spend between $1,500 USD and $3,000 USD each year for these costs. Plattsburgh provides financial assistance for international students including scholarships, grants, and on-campus employment.

Why should I attend Plattsburgh rather than another college or university in the United States?

The international students at Plattsburgh will tell you that there are many things that make SUNY Plattsburgh a truly special place for them:

  • At Plattsburgh, you will get a great education at a relatively affordable price. The cost of attendance for international students is among the lowest in the United States. In addition, international students can receive both scholarships and grants upon admission to Plattsburgh based on the materials submitted with their applications.
  • The faculty and staff here are genuinely interested in the well-being and success of our students, particularly international students. The average class size is only 24 students which enables faculty and students to develop meaningful relationships both in and out of the classroom.
  • The city of Plattsburgh is safe and the community is welcoming. There is much to see and enjoy right here. However, with Montreal only one hour' drive from campus and New York City only six hours away, you can frequently enjoy the distractions of an urban environment, and focus on your studies when you return.
  • At Plattsburgh, you are truly not just a number or a name, but you are noticed and given every opportunity to stand out. The staff in International Student Services is eager to get to know all of our international students. So, from the student's first inquiry until graduation day, the staff communicates with students through e-mail, phone, and office visits.
  • In addition, International Student Services provides activities, workshops, excursions, and one-to-one immigration advising in order to promote academic success, as well as personal growth and cross-cultural understanding.

Can I study English as a Second Language at Plattsburgh?

Definitely! Applicants with paper-based TOEFL scores of 540+ or computer-based scores of 207+ can be considered for direct admission into full-time academic study. However, applicants with paper-based TOEFL scores as low as 450 and computer-based scores as low as 133 can be considered for admission through the English Bridge Program.

Plattsburgh State's English Bridge Program offers courses in English as a second language (ESL) at the intermediate and advanced levels. In addition, students in this program develop academic study skills and familiarity with American culture. Students completing the program have been very successful in their academic studies at Plattsburgh.

Applicants who need basic-level courses in English as a second language are encouraged to consider enrollment at one of the many two-year colleges in the State University of New York offering ESL courses (see Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Mohawk Valley Community College, etc.) or at an ELS Language Center prior to enrollment at Plattsburgh.
