Transfer Student Application Process

The steps listed below are for students who are planning to enroll for the spring or fall 2010 semesters. Students interested in 2011 admissions will be able to apply after August 1, 2010.

Enroll at SUNY Plattsburgh in 8 Easy Steps

Step 1: Visit Our Campus (Optional)

The best way to know if SUNY Plattsburgh is the right fit for you is to visit our campus.

Campus tours are available year-round. In addition to the tour, you can also schedule a meeting with an Admissions Advisor, and request a meeting with an academic or student service department representative.

To schedule an appointment, call the Admissions office at (888) 673-0012 or (518) 564-2040.

Step 2: Apply For Admission

Apply Online
Transfer students have two options to apply online - The State University of New York (SUNY) Application or the Common Application. Both applications are viewed equally by the admissions committee. Please be sure to complete only one of the two applications.

Take the Next Step

  • Common Application
    • Students who apply through the Common Application will need to do the following:
      • Complete the Common Application
      • Complete the Plattsburgh-specific supplement
      • Pay the $40.00 application fee
      • Send an official college transcript(s)
      • Send an official high school transcript (if applying with under 24 credits completed at time of application)
      • Send SAT/ACT scores (if applying with under 24 credits completed at time of application)
    • Please note: An essay and a letter of recommendation are required for admission. Completion of the Common Application will provide SUNY Plattsburgh with the personal essay. In addition, an e-mail will be sent automatically requesting the letter of recommendation from an advisor, professor or teacher.
  • SUNY Application
    • Students who apply through the SUNY Application will need to do the following:
      • Complete the SUNY Application
      • Complete the online Supplemental Application for Transfer Students
      • Pay the $40.00 application fee
      • Send an official college transcript(s)
      • Send an official high school transcript (if applying with under 24 credits completed at time of application)
      • Send SAT/ACT scores (if applying with under 24 credits completed at time of application)
    • Please note: An essay and a letter of recommendation are required for admission. Once SUNY Plattsburgh receives your SUNY Application (usually within 1-2 weeks after submission) we will send an e-mail with a link to the online Supplemental Application for Transfer Students. The online supplemental will provide the admissions committee with your essay and the name/e-mail of the person submitting your letter of recommendation. We will then automatically send an e-mail requesting the letter of recommendation on your behalf.

Apply by Mail
While we strongly encourage you to apply online, you can also submit a paper application. To download a paper Common Application, please go to http://www.commonapp.org/. The completed Common Application can be forwarded to:

Visit our Financial Aid Office online for more information.

Step 5: Receive Notice of the Application Decision

Step 6: Pay Your Deposit

If you are accepted and decide to enroll at SUNY Plattsburgh, you'll need to pay a $250 deposit as a token of good faith.
Your deposit must be paid by:

  • May 1 (for Fall)
  • December 1 (for Spring), or
  • within 30 thirty days after your acceptance if you are accepted after those dates.

Once we have received your deposit, we will send you important information on housing, orientation, and registration.

You can pay your deposit online by logging in to your MyPlattsburgh account.

Step 7: Review Your Credit Evaluation (The CAPP Report)

The Admissions Office will complete an official credit evaluation once your deposit is paid. Your credit evaluation, called the CAPP Report, shows how all of your prior course work is placed in your new degree track at SUNY Plattsburgh, and what additional coursework is needed for graduation.

We encourage you to closely review your CAPP Report, and notify the Admissions Office immediately if there are any discrepancies.

For more information on the CAPP Report, click here.

Step 8: Attend Orientation & Register for Classes

Main Campus

Attend Orientation (Fall Semester only)

  • Main campus students enrolling for the fall semester will be invited to attend one of two summer orientation programs. The programs are typically held during the last week of June and the third week of July. At orientation, you will have the opportunity to meet with the chair of your academic department, register for classes, and much more! You will be invited to orientation in late May. Learn more about orientation.

Register Online (Spring and Fall Semesters)

  • Online registration is available for all fall students who are unable to attend summer orientation and for spring students. Specific information about online registration will be provided in your transfer credit evaluation packet.

Please note: While there is no orientation program for spring students, many traditional orientation activities will be available on opening weekend.

Branch Campus at Adirondack Community College

  • Students attending our Branch Campus should register for a new student orientation session. The new student orientation sessions are held at the Regional Higher Education Center on the Adirondack Community College campus. After paying their deposit, students should contact the Branch Campus to register for an orientation session by calling (518) 792-5425.
