Transfer Student Application Process

Enroll at SUNY Plattsburgh in 9 Easy Steps

Step 1: Visit Our Campus (Optional)

If you have not already done so, we invite you to visit.

Don't let facts and hearsay decide where you go to college. Visit the campus, experience the sights and sounds of Plattsburgh, and determine if we're the right fit for you.

Tours are available during the academic year and in the summer. You can also schedule an interview with an Admissions Advisor as well as a departmental visit.

Step 2: Apply For Admission

We invite you to apply online.

These applications must be forwarded to: SUNY Application Processing Center, State University Plaza, Albany NY, 12246-0001.

In addition to the SUNY application, Transfer Applicants are also required to complete the Supplemental Application Form for Transfers.

Note: Be sure to send all official transcripts directly to SUNY Plattsburgh Admissions. If you have attended more than one college, remember to include official transcripts from each college. If applicable, send your score report for Advanced Placement (AP) or CLEP exams.

Step 3: Check Application Status

After you have applied for admission, you can check the status of your application to find out your decision and any items needed complete your application.

Step 4: Apply For Financial Aid

Step 5: Entrance Requirements

We'll evaluate your application based on:

  • The courses you've already completed
  • Your cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) calculated on all of the courses you've taken at other colleges

We recommend a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3 for admission to the majority of majors at Plattsburgh State.

Note: If you have completed fewer that two (2) full-time semesters at the time of your application, your high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores are required for admission, in addition to your official college transcripts.

Step 6: Help Us To Evaluate Your Credits

Your credit evaluation shows us how all of your prior course work is placed in your new degree track at SUNY Plattsburgh, and what additional coursework is needed for graduation.

Step 7: Receive Notice of the Application Decision

  • Fall Admission: Acceptance packets are mailed beginning January 15 and continue on a rolling basis until admission closes (usually in mid-summer).
  • Spring Admission: Acceptance packets are mailed beginning November 1 and continue on a rolling basis until admission closes in early or mid-January.

Step 8: Pay Your Deposit

If you are accepted and decide to enroll at SUNY Plattsburgh, you'll need to pay a $150 deposit as a token of good faith.

Your deposit must be paid by:

  • May 1 (for Fall)
  • December 1 (for Spring), or
  • within 30 thirty days after your acceptance if you are accepted after those dates.

Once we have received your deposit, we will send you important information on housing, orientation, and registration.

Step 9: Pre-Registration

Once you've been accepted and have paid your deposit, the chairperson of your department will pre-register you into your first-semester courses.

The chairperson notifies our Registrar of the courses that you should have during your first semester. When you meet with the chairperson at Orientation and Registration, you will have the opportunity to make desired adjustments.

Pre-Registration Schedule:

  • Fall Applicants: Pre-registration starts in early June and continues through the summer
  • Spring Applicants: Pre-registration starts in early December and continues through early January

Step 10: Attend Transfer Orientation and Registration

We hold these programs in the summer during the last week of June and the third week of July. For students enrolling in the spring, there is not a specific orientation, however there will be advisement session and other orientation activities during opening weekend.

You will be invited one month in advance of the program's start.
