Ways of Giving to the Plattsburgh College Foundation
While each gift benefits the college and its students, a gift may also provide certain added financial benefits to you. Please consider the following methods of giving - they are helpful to know about when you review your current finances, retirement plan, or estate plans. Ways of giving include:
Gifts of Cash
Cash gifts are the most direct and simple way to make a gift and provide immediate support to SUNY Plattsburgh. If you are considering making a gift in payments, we are able to accept your pledge and extend payments over a period of time. The Foundation accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover as well as personal checks made payable to The Plattsburgh College Foundation, Inc. Make your gift now by calling us at (800) 964-1889 or through our secure online giving form . You may also mail your gift to the address at the bottom of the page. Faculty and staff of SUNY Plattsburgh can make a gift through payroll deduction. To download the form, click here. (Requires Adobe Reader.)
Gifts of Stock
Gifts of stock also benefit the College immediately. Appreciated stock, when held for the required length of time, may allow the donor to make a much larger gift than anticipated, since the donor avoids paying capital gains taxes and is also allowed a charitable deduction. Making a gift of stock is quite easy. For instructions, please call Paul Leduc, Director of Annual Giving and Special Campaigns, at (800) 964-1889 or directly at (518) 564-3106.
Gifts of Real Estate
A donor may give property to the Foundation outright, make a bequest of real estate, or even give the Foundation title while retaining the right to live in a house during his or her lifetime. Each provides a distinct tax benefit.
Gifts in Kind
Many kinds of personal property may be appropriate to give to the Plattsburgh College Foundation. Each year, numerous pieces of donated artwork, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints enrich the permanent collection of the Plattsburgh State Art Museum. In fact, almost the entire collection has been the result of many generous contributions. Gifts of books and other printed materials are frequently made to the Feinberg Library, particularly to Special Collections, which focuses on regional history. The Foundation, in recent years, has also received gifts of computers and other valuable laboratory equipment.
Planned Giving
Bequests
Donors interested in providing for the College through the Foundation in their estate plans may find that the simplest method is through a bequest or will. Donors may choose to leave a fixed amount, a certain percentage of their estate, or a remainder interest. The donor may specify that the gift be used to meet the College's most urgent needs, restrict the gift to a specific program, or create an endowment, which would generate income in perpetuity for the specified use. A bequest to a charitable organization may reduce or eliminate estate taxes for survivors.
Life Income Gifts
These gifts provide a donor with income for life, while allowing the donor to make a significant gift to the Foundation. Depending on the donor's investments, these gift methods may provide a higher rate of return than the donor is currently receiving. To learn more, click here.
Life Insurance
Life insurance provides another very simple method of making a gift. The Foundation may be named simply as beneficiary. Additionally, if you designate the Foundation as the beneficiary and also transfer ownership of the policy to the Foundation, you may be able to receive a charitable deduction for the fully funded policy.
Gifts of Retirement Plans
This form of gift is rapidly becoming more popular as IRAs, 401Ks, and other retirement plans become more numerous. In most cases, the donor would simply designate the Foundation to receive the funds remaining at the end of his/her lifetime in accordance with current laws and tax regulations.
