Cardinals Top SUNYAC, 2nd in New York in Directors' Cup
CLEVELAND, Ohio
- Plattsburgh State Athletics ranks 16th out of 271 scoring schools in the latest U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings released this week by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The standings are based on tournament finishes in NCAA Championships competition, and reflect the success of an institution's broad-based approach to intercollegiate athletics offerings. Following completion of 10 winter NCAA Division III championships, Plattsburgh's 344 total points paces schools affiliated with the State University of New York Athletic Conference and are ranked second only behind New York University among institutions based in the Empire State. The Cardinals recorded 254 points on the strength of a banner winter season in which women's hockey (100 points) won its second straight national championship, men's hockey (90) was the national runner-up and men's basketball (64) reached the Sweet 16 (Sectional Semifinals). According to the NACDA's rating formula, Plattsburgh was credited with a ninth-place finish in men's basketball.
The No. 16 ranking represents the highest the Cardinals have ever been listed in the 13-year history of the NACDA Directors' Cup, and they are only 13-1/2 points shy of last season's school-record 357-1/2 total with the 2008 spring season to go in baseball, men's lacrosse, softball and men's/women's outdoor track and field. The release dates for Spring #1 and Spring Final are May 22 and June 11, respectively. Plattsburgh was 57th after the final Fall standings and T-91st following Winter #1 standings.
There are 422 active NCAA Division III schools eligible for the USSA Directors' Cup program during the 2007-08 academic year.
