Cardinal Trio Selected to "Watch List" by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper
TUCSON, Ariz. - Plattsburgh State has landed three players--sophomore right-handed pitchers Matt O'Leary, Dan Tracy and junior shortstop Tory Bouyea--on the 2010 NCAA Division III "Players to Watch List" by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Among State University of New York Athletic Conference programs, nationally-ranked Cortland led the way with four selections and Oneonta had one.
O'Leary, of Kings Park (N.Y.) High School, emerged as the Cardinals' ace and proved to be one of the SUNYAC's top pitchers in his first season in 2009. He was tabbed the rookie of the year by both SUNYAC and Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate. He finished with team bests of 3.55 earned-run average, 10 starts, three complete games and 66 innings pitched. His 7-2 record tied a team benchmark for wins in a season. The Cardinals' Most Outstanding Pitcher was among conference leaders in those statistical categories. He also had 36 strikeouts for second on the team.
A Somers (N.Y.) High product, Tracy had a solid freshman year recording a 5-0 mark, 4.40 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 47 innings of work.
The homegrown Bouyea (Plattsburgh HS) became a starter immediately for the Cardinals after playing his freshman campaign at Clinton Community College. He batted .339 in 31 games while hitting a home run and driving in 15 runs. He posted a .415 slugging percentage and a .407 on-base average. His 120 assists ranked second in SUNYAC and set the Plattsburgh all-time single season benchmark.
The list was chosen by Division III baseball coaches across the country, and spotlights a select group of student-athletes at each position. It appears in the Jan. 8 issue of Collegiate Baseball, a publication that covers all levels of college baseball.
Plattsburgh--expected to return most of last year's team that went 24-17 and won its first-ever postseason game in the SUNYAC Tournament--opens 2010 with five contests at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C., from March 4-6.
All told, the Cardinals have produced 29 CBN preseason "All-Americans" since 2004.

Burns, Read to Serve as Co-Captains in 2010
PLATTSBURGH - Seniors Matt Burns and and Alex Read have been named captains for the Plattsburgh State baseball team during the 2010 season. That announcement was made Thursday by Cardinals head coach Kris Doorey.

He earned the team's most improved player award after nearly doubling his output of 22 runs batted in from what he produced in the previous two years combined, taking advantage of a strong non-traditional season last fall.
An outfielder from Ottawa, Ontario (Sir Wilfred Laurier Secondary School), Read received the 2009 Coaches Award for the player who best demonstrates a winning attitude and work ethic throughout the course of the season, voted on by his teammates and the coaching staff. The Cardinals (23-16 overall) will now play No. 2-seed Fredonia, a 3-1 loser to Brockport earlier in the day, in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Cardinals closed the gap 10-6 with three in the seventh, when the rains hit the Cortland area.

Curcio Powers Plattsburgh to Walk-Off Win in Split with Cortland
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Joe Curcio hit his second home run of the game with one out in the ninth inning on Saturday to lift Plattsburgh State to a 9-8 walk-off win in the nightcap against nationally ranked Cortland at Chip Cummings Field. Cortland easily won the opener, 12-3. The Red Dragons, who are listed No. 23 in the ABCA coaches' poll, are now 23-12 overall and 9-3 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The Cardinals broke their longest losing streak of the season at four games to improve to 19-13 and 5-5 in the SUNYAC.
Curcio, who also had a two-run blast to knot the score at 7-all in the seventh, finished with three runs batted in while etching his name in the Cardinal record book. He tied Dave Waldron's 2005 benchmark of six home runs in a single season and became the eighth player in school history to hit two in a game.
In the eighth, Andersen Gardner had a RBI single as the Red Dragons reclaimed the lead 8-7. But in the home half of the frame, the Cardinals answered right back as freshman Pat Shaughnessy led off with a solo home run to straight-away center field which is a distance of more than 400 feet from home plate.
Gardner led Cortland's 14-hit attack with three and he drove in four runs.
Plattsburgh had 12 hits as Tory Bouyea, Kyle Kowalowski and Matt Kelley joined Curcio with two apiece. Reliever Billy Davis pitched 3-2/3 effective innings to earn the win and improve to 4-2 on the season. He allowed just one run on three hits and struck out two without issuing a walk.

Cardinals Drop Pair at SUNYAC Foe Fredonia
FREDONIA, N.Y. - Fredonia State swept visiting Plattsburgh State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Ludwig Field on Sunday, taking advantage of seven Cardinal errors in a 7-4 win in the first game and then erasing a 4-0 deficit to capture the nightcap 6-4. The Blue Devils improve to 20-6 overall and 7-3 in the SUNYAC while the Cardinals drop to 18-11 and 4-4 in the conference.
Tory Bouyea led Plattsburgh in the first game by going 2-for-5, including his first home run in a red and white uniform.
The Cardinals held leads of 2-1 and 4-2, but committed a season-high seven errors that led to only four of the runs being earned. One bright spot for the defense was tying a school record with four double plays turned; the benchmark was set on April 23 of last season against Middlebury.

Tufts' fifth hit, a run-scoring single with one-out in the ninth, forced extra innings and freshman Dave Soltis ended the game with a RBI-single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.
ECAC Adds to O'Leary's Pitcher of the Week Recognition
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference has followed on the heels of the State University of New York Athletic Conference, and named Plattsburgh State baseball player Matt O'Leary its pitcher of the week for the Upstate, for the period ending Sunday.
O'Leary, of Kings Park (N.Y.) High School, fired a two-hit, 1-0 shutout against the Oneonta Red Dragons leading Plattsburgh to a victory in game one of a conference doubleheader on Friday. The freshman started the game by retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced (one reached on error), and allowed a runner to second base only three times. Coach Doorey Earns Win No. 200
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State baseball coach Kris Doorey earned his 200th career victory on Saturday after the Cardinals routed SUNY Purchase, 10-2, in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader. Doorey is the program's all-time winningest coach, a tenure that spans eight years (138-126 through April 11). Including three seasons at MacMurray in Jacksonville, Ill., his all-time NCAA record is 200-187-1. The Cardinals, who are currently 17-7 this season, are on pace for their fourth 20-win season under Doorey. Arguably Plattsburgh's biggest win in school history came under Doorey's watch on April 26, 2007, when the Cardinals upset No. 3-ranked Cortland--which eventually finished third nationally at the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament--for the first victory against the Red Dragons since 1976.

Skidmore Comes From Behind to Breeze by Plattsburgh
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Mike Jaffe and Justin Morelli paced a Skidmore College 11-hit attack with three apiece as the visiting Thoroughbreds came from behind to defeat Plattsburgh State, 8-2, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday at Chip Cummings Field. Baseball Splits Split Twinbill at Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic
FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team defeated Central College, 3-2, before losing to Babson College, 13-4, on the third day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic here at Terry Park. The Cardinals, who will take an off-day Wednesday, now stand at 6-4 overall. The Dutch fall to 4-6 while the Beavers improve to 4-2.
Matt O'Leary (2-0) pitched a strong game against Central, scattering eight hits and working around four walks and two wild pitches. But the freshman struck out a career-high eight batters and allowed just two runs in 8-1/3 innings. Billy Davis came in relief to earn the save after inheriting two runners on base with one out.
Plattsburgh had only four hits but benefited from five Dutch errors that led to only one of the runs being earned.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Pat Shaughnessy. Matt Kelley added a run-scoring single for some insurance in the seventh when Plattsburgh led 3-1.

FT. MYERS, Fla. - Bethel University snapped the Plattsburgh State baseball team's winning streak at four games on Monday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, sweeping the Cardinals in a non-conference doubleheader, 17-10 and 8-7. Plattsburgh (5-3) lost back-to-back contests for the first time this season while the Royals now stand at 4-5.
In the first game, Bethel jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and tacked on eight more runs in the third for a 14-0 cushion. The Cardinals committed four errors that didn't help their cause.
Ten different Cardinals had a hit, and John Campbell and Joe Curcio had two runs batted in apiece.

The Cardinals won their fourth game in a row to improve to 5-1 while the Beavers lost their first game of the year in four starts.
Kelley worked 7-1/3 innings, scattering seven hits while allowing one walk and five runs (but only two were earned). He also struck out five batters.

Kelley Belts Way to SUNYAC Player of the Week Laurels
FREDONIA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State baseball player Matt Kelley, of Mechanicville (Stillwater High School/Hartwick College), had impressive offensive numbers to earn the season's first State University of New York Athletic Conference player of the week award that was announced on Monday.
The senior led Plattsburgh to a 4-1 record last week during the Cardinals' spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. His totals for the five games included a .600 batting average (12-20) and a slugging percentage of 1.050 as he collected 21 total bases. He ended up hitting two home runs and driving in 15 runs including a career-high six RBIs in a 15-4 win against Manchester.

Campbell Pitches Gem, Kelley Shines as Plattsburgh Concludes Palmetto State Trip
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team Friday wrapped up the first of two southern trips by sweeping a split doubleheader at The Ripken Experience, blanking Penn St.-Berks, 4-0, and then pounding Manchester, 15-4. The Cardinals have won four of their first five games to start the season.
In the first game against the Nittany Lions (3-6-1 overall), senior John Campbell threw a complete-game shutout in his first collegiate start on the mound. Campbell previously has been used mostly as a shortstop and outfielder and sometimes as a relief pitcher. He scattered four hits, struck out 10 batters and didn't issue any walks. He also helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double, highlighted by a two-run single in the second inning for a 2-0 lead.
Campbell also had plenty of offensive help from Andrew Gooch (2-for-4), Erik Schwind (2-for-4, triple) and Pat Shaughnessy (2-for-3, RBI).
PSU-Berks had a three-game win streak snapped.
In game two during a 17-hit attack, Matt Kelley had three hits and a career-high six runs batted in and Kyle Kowalowski added three hits and scored three times. Kowalowski belted a two-run blast in the third inning and Kelley had a three-run shot in the seventh.
Campbell (2 RBI) and Joe Curcio contributed two hits apiece.
Billy Davis picked up the win in relief of starter Kevin Gent, who left the game in the second. Davis pitched six solid innings and allowed five hits, three walks, two earned runs and he struck out six.
Dan Noonan worked the final two innings on the mound, giving up two walks, two hits and no runs. He also had two strikeouts.
The Spartans are now 4-1 on the season.

Cardinals Split with Wilkes in Twinbill Slugfest
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team generated plenty of offense on Friday against Wilkes University at The Ripken Experience, losing 25-14 before winning 10-5 to earn a split in a non-conference doubleheader. The Cardinals now stand at 2-1 while the Colonels are 3-4.
In the first game, Plattsburgh outhit Wilkes 22 to 21. Starting pitcher Matt Kelley went 4-for-4, including a pair of doubles, with four runs batted in and a walk. John Campbell also had four hits. Andrew Gooch homered among his three hits and he drove in two runs. Erik Schwind and Kyle Kowalowski each had two hits and a double.
Things started well enough for Kelley, who struck out the first two batters he faced on called strikes before surrendering three runs. He continued to struggle in the second inning when he was lifted.
The 11-run loss is the worst since last year's State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament (Brockport eliminated Plattsburgh, 12-0) and the 14 runs are the most in defeat since May 8, 1970, at Fredonia, 15-14.
In the nightcap, Kelley forgot about his pitching woes and led the Cardinals with three hits and three RBI. Andrew Baio went 3-for-4, including a home run, and knocked in three runs. Schwind added a solo blast and Gooch contributed a double.
Matt O'Leary earned the win in his first collegiate start, pitching seven strong innings. He allowed nine hits, three earned runs, a walk and struck out two batters.

Cardinals Win Season Opener in Blowout
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team recorded an 11-2 non-conference win late Thursday night over Lehman College at The Ripken Experience. The nine-run cushion marked the Cardinals biggest season-opening victory under eight-year coach Kris Doorey, and best for the program since April 5, 1968, when Plattsburgh won 15-1 at Drew (N.J.). The Lightning, meanwhile, fall to 0-2 on the year after making three errors on the evening.
The Cardinal offense rapped out 14 hits and the defense did not commit an error. Newcomers led the way as Andrew Gooch had three hits and Andrew Baio went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a triple. Matt Kelley had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI. Erik Schwind also had a multi-hit game with a double and single.
Four Cardinal pitchers held Lehman to five hits. Freshman Tyler Greene made his first career collegiate start, working four innings while allowing two earned runs, three hits and striking out five. Fellow freshman Dan Tracy picked up the win in relief in his collegiate debut, giving up only a hit in two innings.
The Lightning took a 2-0 lead after the opening frame, but Plattsburgh bounced back with five runs in the second inning. The Cardinals sealed the win with a 6-run seventh.

Three Cardinals Selected for the Pre-Season Watch List
TUCSON, Ariz. - Three Plattsburgh State baseball players--catcher Kyle Kowalowski, pitcher Matt Kelley and first baseman Andrew Baio--have been named to an NCAA Division III Preseason Watch list by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Kowalowski and Kelley are seniors while Baio is a junior transfer from the College of Staten Island. Both Kowalowski and Kelley are repeat honorees from last season.
Kowalowski (Saranac High School) is in his first full season as the Cardinals starting catcher after the previous three years as a designated hitter or first baseman. In 2008, he had a career high 41 hits, batted .360 and drove in 17 runs en route to All-New York Region Third Team honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association. He's also the first Cardinal in history to be twice named ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America District I, making the national ballot during his junior year.
A right-hander from Mechanicville, N.Y. (Stillwater HS/Hartwick Coll.), Kelley went 1-3 and had a team-best three saves with a 2.62 earned-run average in 34-1/3 innings of work in a year that began with injuries. He also was listed in the starting lineup 28 times, setting career offensive numbers for at bats (105), runs scored (23) and hits (33). He recorded 16 runs batted in.
Baio, of Staten Island (St. Joseph by the Sea HS), is in his first season with the Cardinals after starring for the CSI Dolphins of the City University of New York Athletic Conference in 2007-08. He hit .377 with 38 RBI, 11 doubles, 6 triples en route to first-team all-CUNYAC accolades as a sophomore, leading CSI to the conference championship with an 11-4 league mark. He had 80 total bases for a .530 slugging percentage, and ranked in the top 10 of 10 conference statistical categories.
All told, the Cardinals have produced 26 CBN Preseason All-Americans since 2004--all coming under the tenure of eight-year coach Kris Doorey.
Plattsburgh opens the 2009 campaign Thursday (7 p.m.) against Lehman College at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Cardinals are seeking to extend their school-record sixth postseason appearance, but improving on their 15-21 overall and 7-7 State University of New York Athletic Conference records from a year ago.

Dahlin on Midwest Sliders' Radar
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Former Plattsburgh State baseball standout Matt Dahlin (Cohoes/Stillwater High School) is expected to sign a professional contract with the Midwest Sliders of the Independent Frontier League, according to Cardinals head coach Kris Doorey. Doorey also said that Dahlin may pitch on Wednesday when the team plays at the Windy City ThunderBolts in Crestwood, Ill.
The Sliders are based in Waterford, Mich. The Frontier League does not have an affiliation agreement with Major League Baseball, and has 12 teams spread across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Dahlin shined earlier this month in the developmental New York State League, earning the league's most valuable pitcher award and being named an All-Star.

Welch, Dahlin Shine in NYSL Season
Sussex, N.J. - Former Plattsburgh State baseball standouts Matt Dahlin (Cohoes, N.Y./Stillwater High School) and Zack Welch (Merrill, N.Y./Northern Adirondack HS) recently closed the New York State League play with postseason accolades. The NYSL is a developmental league for student-athletes who have exhausted their college eligibility and have aspirations to play professional baseball. Last year over 20 NYSL alumni landed contracts with minor league teams. Go to http://www.nystateleague.com/ for more information.
Dahlin, who played at Plattsburgh from 2004 and 2006-07, was named the league's most valuable pitcher and earned the Grover Cleveland Alexander Award. He gave up only one run and 13 hits in 19 innings pitched for a 0.47 earned-run average.
Welch, who completed his four-year collegiate career in May, joined Dahlin on the NYSL All-Star Team. Welch's batting average was around .300 and he played well defensively as a catcher, according to Plattsburgh head coach Kris Doorey.
"Matt and Zack performed well and have definitely put themselves in a position to have an opportunity to play professional baseball," Doorey said. "They had a solid experience which should get them further notice from scouts."
Dahlin and Welch were teammates on the NYSL Federals club managed by Scott Nathanson, who was a catcher in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
The 14-player All-Star Team included NCAA Division I student-athletes from Florida, Louisville, Michigan State and Seton Hall.

Welch, Dahlin Drafted by NYSL
Sussex, N.J. - Former Plattsburgh State baseball standouts Zack Welch and Matt Dahlin have been chosen to participate in the New York State League this summer, according to the organization's Web site ( http://www.nystateleague.com/ ). The NYSL is a developmental league for student-athletes who have exhausted their college eligibility and have aspirations to play professional baseball. Last year, over 20 NYSL alumni landed contracts with minor league teams.
Welch and Dahlin, who will be teammates for the NYSL Federals managed by Scott Nathanson, are among 50 finalists from an original pool of 400 players who recently completed two days of tryouts here at Skylands Park to join the league. Director of Player Development Nick Belmonte made the selections.
Welch, of Merrill, N.Y. (Northern Adirondack High School), is the career hits leader in Cardinals history with 201. A three-time Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason All-American, Welch wrapped up his career last spring.
Dahlin served the 2008 season as a student assistant coach after playing for the Cardinals in 2004 and 2006-07. He batted a career-high .361 average his senior season, but the 2007 all-region and Gold Glove pick was known for his pitching with school career rankings of T-3rd with 13 wins and 5th with 3.81 earned-run average.
"I am very excited for Matt and Zack. This is a great opportunity for them to be seen by more scouts at different levels and continue to chase the dream," said Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey. "Zack capped a great career this spring and was a great leader for our program. Matt was our go-to pitcher during his last two seasons, and I think it is a good sign that he is the opening day starter for his NYSL team."
Andrew Baio (3-for-5) had three and Tory Bouyea and Pat Shaughnessy each had two of Plattsburgh State's 13 hits. The last of five hurlers for the Cardinals, Matt Kelley (1-2), suffered the loss.
A reserve catcher making his first start, Tufts had seen action in three games prior to Wednesday and had one hit in only two at bats. He doubled and scored in the second, his first career extra-base hit, and lined singles in the third, fifth and seventh before tying the contest in the ninth. UVM trailed 8-6 in that inning when Corey Moylan doubled with one out and came around on a triple off the right field wall by James Katsiroubas. Tufts rapped a single to center to knot it at 8-8.
With one down in the 10th, Jeff Nolet tripled to deep centerfield and one out later, Soltis was given an extra life when his pop-up in foul ground was dropped for an error. One pitch later, he drilled his single to center field to score Nolet and give the Catamounts the comeback win.
UVM (8-19) had early 3-1 and 4-2 leads before Plattsburgh State sent 10 hitters to the plate to score six runs in the fifth. Kyle Kowalowski had the big blow, a triple down the right field line with the bases loaded for the Division III Cardinals (17-8), who saw their four-game win streak come to a halt. Vermont rallied for two in its half of the fifth with one run on a fielders' choice by Eric Fredette and another a double play ball.
Freshman Matt O'Leary, Plattsburgh's fourth pitcher of the day, kept the Cardinals in front by throwing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. He is the reigning pitcher of the week by the Eastern College Athletic (Upstate) and State University of New York Athletic conferences.
Tufts had five of the team's 16 hits. Katsiroubas also had his best day at the plate as a Catamount going 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI. Moylan and Tom Kelly also had two hits apiece with Kelly also stealing two bases.
Kelly (1-2), the sixth pitcher of the day for Vermont, picked up the victory on the mound retiring all six hitters he faced in the ninth and 10th. He was one of four relievers who combined to hold the Cardinals scoreless over the last four and two-third innings to allow the Cats to come back.
