Williams Chosen for the Collegiate Basketball Invitational
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - McCarthy Sports, Inc., has announced that Plattsburgh State's Anthony Williams is one of 65 players who will compete in the Collegiate Basketball Invitational in Wadsworth, Ohio, on April 24-26. At the three-day event, players will have the opportunity to compete in front of the professional team representatives, agents and national media. For additional information about the Invitational (CBI), please visit http://www.collegiatebasketballinvitational.com
Williams, a 6-1 senior guard out of Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn, will play for Renacci-Doraty Chevrolet that is coached by Joe Lombardi of Indiana (Pa.) University. The only Division III player on his team's roster, Williams' teammates include DeAndre Townsend of NCAA II Emporia State, Brad Harris of NAIA I Lee University, Collins Harris of NCAA II Drury, Tramaine Stevens of NAIA II Florida Memorial, Brian Monahan of NCAA II St. Michael's, Chris Gilliam of NCAA II Pitt-Johnstown and Marko Kolaric of NCAA II Chaminade. )
The Invitational (CBI) is a major national basketball event that will gather the finest 65 senior men's basketball players from all of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and Division III and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Williams is believed to be the first State University of New York Athletic Conference player to participate in the CBI. He led the SUNYAC and ranked seventh in NCAA III with a 24.2 scoring average (almost 7.0 ppg more than second place in the conference) en route to All-America accolades from the NABC/State Farm (First Team), D3hoops.com (Second Team) and Division III Bulletin (Third Team). He also earned SUNYAC Player of the Year honors for the second straight season, and helped the Cardinals (27-3 overall, 16-0 SUNYAC) to their third straight conference championship and NCAA Sweet 16 tournament berth.
"Anthony Williams has put together an outstanding basketball resume while a student-athlete at SUNY Plattsburgh over the past three years. He is a two-year All-American, the school's career scoring leader and has led our team to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances," Plattsburgh coach Tom Curle said. "However, the true story of Anthony's success lies in his ability to overcome adversity and hardship to become, arguably, the best player in our school's history and ultimately earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in History this May. We are truly proud of him."
You can read Anthony's story at these websites:
http://www.ncaa.com/basketball-mens/article.aspx?id=134056
http://www.pressrepublican.com/archivesearch/local_story_076214527.html
The CBI event will take place at Wadsworth (Ohio) High School, and will consist of eight teams of eight players (one team with nine players) in an eight-team tournament. Each team will play a total of three games that will be played Thursday and Friday, culminating with the championship game being played Friday night at 8 p.m. The CBI will conclude with an all-star game Saturday evening in front of a live, ESPNU audience as 20 players will be selected to play in the game.
"I sincerely congratulate the 65 players that have been selected to compete in this prestigious event," said CBI Founder John McCarthy. "I am very excited about these 65 players and I am proud and honored to welcome them to Wadsworth for the Collegiate Basketball Invitational. I am confident that this class of players will help make the public aware of the high level of talent at the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA levels.
"I would like to thank our selection committee and the many, many coaches from around the country who have shared their insights and taken their time to provide valuable information about the top seniors in the country. With approximately 1,000 colleges and universities within these divisions, the selection of players has truly been a challenging task. Narrowing this field to 65 players has been very difficult, as there are many other players at these levels that are very talented players of high character. We have worked hard to handle this selection process with class and integrity.
"The outpouring of support for this event from around the country has reinforced my faith in the value of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational. The event is simply good for the game of basketball on several levels and this announcement makes me personally proud."
The All-Star Game will consist of the top 20 players from among the 65 players selected to compete at the (CBI). The players at the CBI are the top seniors from all of NCAA Division II-III and the NAIA.

Plattsburgh Rakes in Postseason Accolades
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team's historic 2007-08 season has received nationwide attention from the Kansas City, Mo.-based National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D3hoops.com headquartered in Sterling, Va.
Head coach Tom Curle is the top coach in the East Region by both the NABC and D3hoops.com. The fifth-year mentor led the Cardinals to their third-straight State University of New York Athletic Conference Championship and an NCAA Division III tournament appearance in as many years, reaching the Sweet Sixteen. The 2007 and 2008 SUNYAC Coach of the Year, he has a 97-47 record for a .674 winning percentage at the school.
Senior guard Anthony Williams (Brooklyn/Paul Robeson High School/Morgan State) is a NCAA Division III All-America selection on the NABC State Farm First Team and D3hoops.com Second Team, becoming the program's first two-time All-American (he was third-team NABC as a junior). Williams also has been tabbed the East Player of the Year by both the NABC and D3hoops.com after being on the organizations' all-region first team. He averaged a SUNYAC-leading and career-high 24.2 points per game, which ranked seventh in the nation.
Senior forward Travis Gorham, of Bridgeport, Conn. (Bridgeport Central HS/Post University) joined Williams on the all-region first teams by the NABC and D3hoops.com. According to Coach Curle, Gorham missed NABC All-America honors by just one place, as the coaches selected three teams. Gorham was the only SUNYAC player to average a double-double with 12.4 points and conference-leading 11.2 rebounds while shooting 56.0 percent from the field.
Plattsburgh set a school record for wins in a season (27-3), became the first SUNYAC school to go undefeated in a 16-game conference schedule and tied the school benchmark with a 20-game win streak. The Cardinals also set program firsts in the national rankings: peaking at No. 7, 16 consecutive weeks in the Top 25 poll, final ranking of No. 13 and 450 poll points (with one first-place vote) during Week 14. They were the only team in the country to go unbeaten during in-region play at 20-0.
All NABC teams are voted on by member coaches. For D3hoops.com, student-athletes are nominated by their school's Sports Information Director and chosen by SIDs, while its all-America team is voted by a special D3hoops.com panel. Click here for D3hoops All-America Team and D3hoops All-East Region

Brandeis never got closer than seven points after that.
Joe Coppens led the Judges with 18 points and eight rebounds, and Terrell Hollins added 13 points. Kevin Olson chipped in 11 points.
Brandeis (23-6) took a 29-24 lead at the intermission.
Amherst compensated for being outrebounded 46-38 by blocking 12 shots and shooting better from the field (46.2 percent to 30.6) and making nine more free throws.
Amherst's Andrew Olson also had nine points and seven assists.

Plattsburgh Crowns King's in OT Thriller
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2008) - The nationally ranked Plattsburgh State men's basketball team advanced to the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Tournament after a thrilling 83-77 overtime victory Saturday over a determined King's College squad before a sellout crowd of 1,000 at Memorial Hall. The host Cardinals tied a school record with their 20th-consecutive victory to improve to 27-2, and will next play on March 14 at a site to be determined in their first Sweet 16 appearance since the 1976 Final Four squad. The Monarchs, who had a 10-game win streak snapped, ended their season at 20-9.
Anthony Williams led Plattsburgh with 22 points, followed by Travis Gorham and Antwane Miller with 16 apiece. Gorham completed a double-double with a game-high 17 rebounds. Miller, a guard, also recorded a double-double with a career-best 11 rebounds.
John Soboleski was a force in the paint to pace four King's scorers in double figures with 30 points on 7 of 10 field goal shooting and 16 of 23 at the free throw line. He also had eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots while playing 40 of 45 minutes. Jamie Cousart added 12 points on 6-of-9 from the field, Kofi Dwebeng also had 12 and Vince Scalzo, 10. Cousart also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists.
After the teams were tied 69-all at the end of regulation, Plattsburgh never trailed in the overtime period as freshman Chris Ruiz scored six of his seven points in the extra session to spark the 14-8 run to end the game. Gorham also got a key defensive rebound on a missed free throw by Soboleski that would have tied it at 71, but kept Plattsburgh--which had a 60.0 field goal percentage in overtime--ahead to stay.
With the 35-second shot clock about to expire, Scalzo nailed a long 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime. It was the 10th and final tie of the game.
King's, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., gave the No. 7-ranked Cardinals all they could on their home court, taking a 33-26 halftime lead. The Monarchs made 13 of 25 field goal attempts for 52.0 percent, including a 50.0 clip (5-10) from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Plattsburgh made only 33.3 percent (11-33, including 2-of-9 on 3-pointers) of their shots from the field.
Plattsburgh started the second half on a 10-3 run to tie it 36-36 on a pair of Ricky Rider free throws, and Miller sparked it with six points. Neither team had more than a four-point lead for the last 16 minutes and 35 seconds of regulation.
King's did an excellent job of keeping Plattsburgh's All-American in Williams in check, limiting him to three points in the first half on 1-of-11 shooting and forcing six turnovers. But Williams bounced back in the second with three clutch treys.
Plattsburgh controlled the glass with a huge 48 to 27 margin.
