Adickes is shown in the picture escorting women to their seats at the Go Red for Women Premiere Night held last month at the Cumberland 12 Theatres in Plattsburgh. He was one of six Cardinal student-athletes to help with event registration, checking-in coats and welcoming guests at the door.

Heymann Runs to All-America Finish at NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Plattsburgh State junior Mike Heymann netted All-America accolades for the second straight year on Saturday with a Top 10 showing at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College at the Highland Park Golf Course. He was the lone Cardinal to represent the program. Click on the Link for Complete Results

Heymann had a personal-best 9th-place finish in his third NCAA appearance, covering the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes and 40.3 seconds. He was 20th at last season's Nationals. He was the first competitor out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference to cross the finish line in an event that featured nationally ranked teams Geneseo and 2008 NCAA champion Cortland, and the second runner from a New York-based school.

Lynchburg's Ricky Flynn had a winning time of 25:09.8, and North Central (Ill.) defeated Williams for the team championship, 50 to 181.

Heymann Headed to National Meet

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State junior Mike Heymann will be making his third appearance in as many years at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country National Championships, hosted this year by Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. The race is set to take place on Saturday, November 21, at noon and the chosen venue is the Highland Park Golf Course in Highland Hills, Ohio.

Heymann, who finished 20th at the meet a year ago, was one of seven individual runners to earn an at-large bid to the big show out of the Atlantic Regional held last week. He finished the regional competition in second-place in a time of 24:53.8, just 13 seconds out of first, and picked up First Team All-Atlantic Region honors for the third-straight year.

"Mike has had a tremendous junior season this year, he has really grasped the concept of training smart and racing hard and it is paying dividends. He has to be feeling confident after finishing second to the two-time national champion last weekend, and he made a very strong move in the last mile to pull away from two guys that have a shot at the top-10 this weekend, [Zach Maher of New York University and Lee Berube  of Geneseo]. Mike can race with anyone in the country. When it comes down to the top-10 in the country, anyone can do anything on any given day, and I think Mike has a shot to do something no male has done before in school history on Saturday," commented Cardinal head coach John Lynch.

If Heymann were to finish in the top-10 at the national meet, he would be the first Cardinal men's cross country runner to do so. Previously Plattsburgh had two runners finish in 11th place at the event, Corey Davidson accomplished the feat in 1999 and Matt DeShane did it in 2006.

Cardinal Men Finish Fifth at SUNYACs

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The nationally-ranked No. 34 Plattsburgh State men's cross country team finished in fifth-place at the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championship meet hosted by Cortland. The Cardinals finished with 132 points, three points out of fourth-place.

"I am very disappointed in how the men performed. We were ready to do something much bigger than what we did and we failed to show up in one of the most important races of the year. The men's team, though, is led by veterans who have competed at the national level, so I hope that we can rebound in the next two weeks before stepping out there for regionals as we really could still be in the hunt for a top-five finish," commented head coach John Lynch.

Mike Heymann led the team with a second-place finish in a time of 25:20.83, eight seconds away from first. Robert Grim followed him across the finish line in 26th with a time of 26:56.95.

Matt Burdick (40th, 27:41.73), Josh Mitchell (42nd, 27:48.13) and Noel Lomax (46th, 27:51.71) rounded out the top-five finishers for the Cardinals.

Next up for Plattsburgh is the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional on November 14 at the Letchworth State Park in Mount Morris, N.Y.

Race Against Cancer Raises Money and Awareness

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State's men's and women' cross country & track and field teams hosted its third annual Race Against Cancer to benefit the Relay For Life on Sunday, October 18. "This was the best event we have had in our three-year history of hosting the event. I would really like to thank everyone that came out to make this so successful. Seton Catholic's cross country team participated in the event and gave a lot of support to the race as well. We also had a very touching moment when 11-year-old cancer survivor Sarah Burliss crossed the finish line of the 5k run in 45:33, two seconds ahead of her mother Lisa Burliss. This is the best turnout from the surrounding community that we have ever had and I am looking forward to an even bigger and better race next year," commented Plattsburgh's Director of Track & Field and Cross Country John Lynch.

Men's Cross Country Breaks into National Rankings

NEW ORLEANS, La. - A day after finding out that the team had been ranked on the regional level, the Plattsburgh State cross country program has yet another reason to celebrate. For the first time since head coach John Lynch took over in 2005, both the men's and women's teams are ranked nationally. The United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) placed the men 29th overall and the women 24th.

Plattsburgh is one of three State University of New York Athletic Conference schools ranked on the men's side. Cortland comes in at the three spot and Geneseo is ranked fifth. Meanwhile, New York University (14th), St. Lawrence (20th), and The College of New Jersey (34th) round out the list of Atlantic Region teams ranked.

The Cardinal men made their first appearance as a team since 1999 at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships last fall and finished the meet in 28th place. Mike Heymann earned All-American honors after coming in 20th and returns to lead the team in its 2009 campaign. Also returning from the Cardinals national championship run is Alex Sico--who finished 148th overall at the national meet, Noel Lomax (244th), Bobby Grim (253rd), and Seth Yernye (273rd).

The rankings also mark the first time in a long time that two nationally-ranked teams will square off in the Cardinal Classic in both the men's and women's races. Plattsburgh will be joined at the starting line for the Classic by St. Lawrence, whose women's team is ranked 16th, on September 5th. The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will follow the Rugar Woods Cross Country Course located on the grounds of the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Complex.

Cardinals Ranked Fifth in Preseason Poll

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Plattsburgh State men's cross country has been ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region rankings by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Cardinals, who finished 28th in the nation a season ago, place ahead of State University of New York Athletic Conference foes Fredonia (7th) and Brockport (10th). Meanwhile, the USTFCCCA situated SUNYAC members Cortland and Geneseo in the first and second positions, respectively. Placing just ahead of Plattsburgh in the fourth spot is North Country rival St. Lawrence.

Plattsburgh head coach John Lynch is enthused about the recognition, "I am happy the men's team has stayed where we finished last year. We did lose a couple key role players, but we have gained so much more in experience and youth. I think this ranking is a starting point and should, if anything, instill confidence in the guys."

The Cardinals kick off their 2009 campaign at home on September 5 with the Cardinal Classic. The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will follow the Rugar Woods Cross Country Course located on the grounds of the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Complex.

Coach's Corner

Men's Cross Country Coach John Lynch notes:

"Plattsburgh State Cross Country and hard work go hand-in-hand. The student-athletes here at Plattsburgh are dedicated to the classroom as well as making themselves better runners. The commitment by the distance runners has led to many high performances, both academically and athletically. The cross country teams consistently raise the bar of success each year and take advantage of each opportunity to perform at a high level. Freshmen and newcomers improve through consistently applying a high effort. Plattsburgh State is a program that looks at the long-term goals for all of its student-athletes."

Soaring to New Heights

The Plattsburgh State men's cross country program continues to be a place where student-athletes reach amazing new heights. Since 1990, 28 Cardinal runners have broken the 27-minute mark in 8k competition, with 13 sub-26-minute performances and a team-best 24:08 mark set in 2000. As a team, the Cardinals last won the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship in 1997 and has sent several individuals to the NCAA Championships, including Matt DeShane from 2003 to 2005. Nineteen Cardinals have earned SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame status and five have received the highest honor in our sport--All-America status--with DeShane tabbed in 2005 and '06.

The men's cross country team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement and community service.
