Cardinals Chart Top 20 Finish at Regionals
BRONX, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State finished 15th out of 39 schools at Saturday's NCAA Division III Atlantic Men's Cross Country Regional Championships hosted by New York University at Van Cortlandt Park. COMPLETE MEET RESULTS
Freshman Mike Heymann covered the 8000-meter course in 25 minutes and 23.4 seconds to earn first-team all-region honors, finishing in 21st place. He has a chance to qualify for the national meet as an individual. Also scoring for the Cardinals were Paul Allison (81st, 26:37.6), Chris Ketcham (93rd, 26:49.6), Mathieu Bilodeau (101st, 26:58.5) and Matt Burdick (119th, 27:14.9).
"A 15th-place showing seems disappointing but I could not be happier for our guys. Any other year if we stuck four runners under 27 (minutes) we would be a top-8 team, but the region is so deep this season," Plattsburgh coach John Lynch said. "There is no better way to end the season than to have your top four run lifetime bests and your top five run season bests. We return our top 5 next year and will be looking for a NCAA berth."

"We had a very positive race. The results may not show it place-wise, but we have gained on Brockport from two weeks ago due to our pack. I am very confident that we can secure a top-10 finish in the region (meet) in three weeks. We just need to keep moving our pack of 2nd-7th man up. We are coming on at the right time," Plattsburgh coach John Lynch said.
"Mike Heymann has taken a big step this week as an individual contender for an NCAA berth. He was the second-best freshman here at the conference meet."
Cortland's Justin Wager was the individual champion in 25:50.8, helping the Red Dragons also take the team title with 18 points.

Harriers "Race Against Cancer"
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's and women's cross country teams joined forces with the American Cancer Society on Saturday morning for the 5-kilometer Race Against Cancer Run at the Rugar Woods course behind the Cardinals Fieldhouse Complex. All proceeds go to the ACS for cancer research. Robert Asher won the event with a time of 16 minutes and 21 seconds. The first female winner was Toni Wiszowaty in 19:16. For complete meet results, click on the following link: http://faculty.plattsburgh.edu/john.lynch/RACresults.htm
"The day went well for a first-year event. The team and school really stepped up to raise money--$1,450 for Relay For Life--for a great cause. This was important to me because my family has been stricken with cancer, and I know so many other families out there have been affected by cancer. The disease is such a big killer and it was important for this team to do something," said Cardinals head coach John Lynch. "Hopefully in future years, we can make this event bigger with participation numbers and more proceeds for Relay, and make this race a collegiate invitational as well.
"We compete next weekend at Potsdam for the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championships. The women will be racing nationally ranked No. 4 Geneseo for the title and the men will be in a battle to improve on last year's 5th-place finish."

Men Take Close Second at Cardinal Classic
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's cross country team turned in a successful season debut at home on Saturday morning with a second-place finish in the Cardinal Classic. Saint Lawrence placed seven of the top eight runners and earned 17 points to win the team title.
The Cardinals, who tallied 43 points, were led by freshman Mike Heymann who navigated the 5K Rugar Woods course at the PSUC Fieldhouse in 15 minutes and 55 seconds for fourth place. Also scoring for Plattsburgh were Matt Burdick (11, 16:53), Jack Swartz (13, 17:05), Mathieu Bilodeau (14, 17:07), Chris Ketcham (16, 17:13), Paul Allison (17, 17:15) and Sean Brinkman (21, 17:24).
SLU senior Erik Donohoe had the top individual time in 15:41.
"Mike Heymann made big news for us because he had never broken 16 minutes on a 5k course until today. I also was impressed with Chris Ketcham, Jack Swartz and Sean Brinkman--three returners that all improved over a minute from last year," Plattsburgh coach John Lynch said after the meet. "It hurt our team to have one of our top guys out with a stomach virus, but the team is shaping up nicely. We're a little behind last year's squad after one meet. However, give us 70 more days and I believe we can look like a championship caliber team.

Runners Set to Debut Saturday at Own Cardinal Classic
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State's 2007 men's cross country season gets under way on Saturday with the Cardinal Classic at Rugar Woods near the PSUC Fieldhouse. The 5K meet will begin approximately at 11:45 a.m. (following the women's race). The Cardinals have more depth than a year ago with 17 student-athletes on the roster.
Read Coach John Lynch's thoughts on the season and for the Cardinal Classic:
"This is a new era in Plattsburgh State men's distance running. Team is the center of attention and I totally expect this group to run as a team. We are one week into training and I've already noticed a great bond forged between them. It is now my third year coaching here and I have not seen a team so close in my career. Back in the 1990's the team had the nickname 'The Wolfpack' which was taken from a poem by Rudyard Kipling in which it states 'The strength of the wolf is the pack and the strength of the pack is the wolf.' This pertains to cross country running because the pack makes or breaks how the team does, and an individual can also make or break how the team does. We are reiterating the importance of the pack this year. The team is made up of four returners in Chris Ketcham, Sean Brinkman, Matt Burdick and Jack Swartz, who should all be in the mix to be on the scoring team. The recruiting class includes standouts from across New York state and others transferring from other colleges. Junior Alex Sico, a transfer from Division I Rhode Island, freshman Mike Heymann and international student Mathieu Bilodeau are three newcomers hoping to make a big splash this year. All three men could show individually that they are contenders to make nationals, and that will only help our team's chances of grabbing that valuable Top 5 spot in the region.
"We have seven teams coming tomorrow, including Johnson State, Norwich University, Paul Smith's, Clarkson, SUNY-Canton, Potsdam and St. Lawrence. In the past few years it has been pretty easy for us to walk away with both the team and individual wins, but this year it will become more difficult with St. Lawrence added into the mix. The Saints should give us a good challenge on both the men's and women's sides. The SLU men has been ranked in front of us in the preseason polls and the women are a couple spots behind us. It should be a very exciting event."
Coach's Corner
Men's Cross Country Coach John Lynch notes:
"Plattsburgh State Cross Country and hard work go hand-in-hand. The student-athletes here at Plattsburgh are dedicated to the classroom as well as making themselves better runners. The commitment by the distance runners has led to many high performances, both academically and athletically. The cross country teams consistently raise the bar of success each year and take advantage of each opportunity to perform at a high level. Freshmen and newcomers improve through consistently applying a high effort. Plattsburgh State is a program that looks at the long-term goals for all of its student-athletes."
Soaring to New Heights
The Plattsburgh State men's cross country program continues to be a place where student-athletes reach amazing new heights. Since 1990, 25 Cardinal runners have broken the 27-minute mark in 8k competition, with 12 sub-26-minute performances and a team-best 24:08 mark set in 2000. As a team, the Cardinals last won the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship in 1997 and has sent several individuals to the NCAA Championships, including present team member Matt DeShane in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Nineteen Cardinals have earned SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame status and five have received the highest honor in our sport--All-America status--with DeShane tabbed in 2005.
The men's cross country team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement and community service.
