Two Cardinal Women to Race at Nationals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Two members of the Plattsburgh State women's cross country team will be lacing up this weekend to compete in the NCAA Division III National Championships meet, hosted this year by Baldwin-Wallace College out of Berea, Ohio. Senior Jenny Schaffhouser and sophomore Stefanie Braun will represent the Cardinals after earning at-large bids out of the Atlantic Region.

Schaffhouser will be making her fourth-straight appearance at the event, having placed eighth a year ago. At the regional meet, Schaffhouser placed seventh in a time of 22:15.0 and picked up her third First Team All-Atlantic Region honor in as many years.

"Jenny has had a historic career here at Plattsburgh, possibly being the only female athlete to attend four NCAA cross country championships for the Cardinals. She had a career elevating performance on this stage last year and she has been at a higher level all fall than she was last year. We are hoping she puts it together again on the biggest stage this weekend and ends her historic cross country career at Plattsburgh State on a high note. I really believe Jenny's best race this season will be this weekend," Plattsburgh head coach John Lynch stated.

Meanwhile, Braun moved up 20 places from last year and finished 11th in the regional race in a time of 22:40.5. She earned her first-ever First Team All-Atlantic Region accolade.

"This will be Stefanie's first NCAA appearance, and she has worked very hard over the last year to emerge as one of the regions top runners. I am looking for her to gain some experience racing at this level for her future racing career. Your first NCAA is always a shock, her biggest challenge will be to overcome her nerves and to follow her race plan to perfection; if she does this she can surprise a lot of people. Stefanie's best race has yet to come," predicted Lynch.

The championship race is set to take place on Saturday, November 21, at 11 a.m. and the chosen venue is the Highland Park Golf Course in Highland Hills, Ohio.

Click Here for Complete Atlantic Regional Results

The Cardinals are still in contention for an at-large berth, with head coach John Lynch adding: "Our region is very strong--probably the toughest in the nation--so I'm hopeful that the National Selection Committee will award us a bid to the NCAAs."

Senior Jenny Schaffhouser and sophomore Stefanie Braun both earned all-region first team accolades. Schaffhouser led Plattsburgh with a time of 22 minutes and 15 seconds, which was good for seventh overall. Braun clocked 22:40.5 on the 6,000-meter course for 11th.

Cardinal Women Place Three in Top-20 at SUNYACs

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's cross country team placed three runners in the top-20 of the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championships meet hosted by Cortland enroute to a third-place finish. The Cardinals recorded 79 points, 13 points away from second.

"I am very happy with the women's performance. I don't know how much better we could have ran after three weeks of hard training and racing, it took Cortland's best race of the year to beat us by a very small margin. I know once Jenny [Schaffhouser] and Stefanie [Braun] feel better at regionals their front running abilities have the potential to sky rocket this team up the rankings. We are in a great spot right now as we look forward to regionals and the ladies should be nothing but confident." commented head coach John Lynch.

Schaffhouser placed second for the Cardinals in a time of 23:18.50, 23 seconds out of first. Meanwhile, current SUNYAC Female Runner of the Week Braun came in fourth in a time of 23:33.48. Julia Warren closed out Plattsburgh's top-20 finishers with a 17th-place finish in a time of 24:32.02.

Colleen Cotey and Krystal Yernye closed out the Cardinals' top-five. Cotey finished in 32nd place (25:07.49) and Yernye followed in 33rd (25:09.10).

USTFCCCA Rank Cardinal Women Nationally

NEW ORLEANS, La. - For the first time since head coach John Lynch took over in 2005, both the men's and women's cross country teams at Plattsburgh State are ranked nationally. The United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) placed the men 29th overall and the women 24th.

Fellow State University of New York Athletic Conference members Cortland (7th) and Geneseo (10th) also saw their women's teams make the list, while St. Lawrence (16th), The College of New Jersey (28th), and Ithaca (34) make up the rest of the ranked teams noted from the Atlantic Region.

A year ago, Jenny Schaffhouser earned All-American honors by placing eighth at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships for the Cardinals and has returned to lead the Cardinals during the 2009 season. Schaffhouser, a senior, was also a member of Plattsburgh's 2007 squad, which finished second in the nation with three All-American honorees.

The rankings also mark the first time in a long time that two nationally-ranked teams will square off in the Cardinal Classic in both the men's and women's races. Plattsburgh will be joined at the starting line for the Classic by St. Lawrence, whose men's team is ranked 20th, on September 5th. The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will follow the Rugar Woods Cross Country Course located on the grounds of the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Complex.

Preseason Poll Ranks Women's Cross Country Fourth

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its regional rankings for the upcoming season and has placed the Plattsburgh State women's cross country fourth in the Atlantic Region. Plattsburgh finished sixth at regionals in 2008, while team member Jenny Schaffhouser earned at spot at the national meet and placed eighth for the Cardinals.

Placing ahead of the Cardinals in the poll were State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponents Cortland (1st) and Geneseo (2nd), along with North Country rival St. Lawrence (3rd). Fellow SUNYAC member institution Brockport also made the list, the Golden Eagles are predicted to place eighth.

Plattsburgh's head coach, John Lynch, is happy with the rankings, "I am pretty excited to see the women's team getting some respect. I am unsure if they [the USTFCCCA] realize that we lost three of our top seven runners from last year, not just two of them, but still I think we should be able to finish in the top-four this season," Lynch commented. "We just need to stay healthy and work hard. It [the ranking] is definitely a nice surprise. We do have two new runners that are already showing they are going to make an impact, and some returners that have made huge improvements."

The Cardinals kick off their 2009 campaign at home on September 5 with the Cardinal Classic. The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will follow the Rugar Woods Cross Country Course located on the grounds of the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Complex.

Coach's Corner from Head Coach John Lynch

"Plattsburgh State Cross Country and hard work go hand-in-hand. The student-athletes here at Plattsburgh are dedicated to the classroom, and to making themselves better runners. The commitment by the distance runners has led to many high performances both academically and athletically. The Cross Country teams consistently raise the bar of success each year and take advantage of the given opportunity to perform at a high level. Freshmen and newcomers improve through consistently applying a high effort. Plattsburgh State is a program that looks at the long-term goals for all of its athletes.

Reaching Full Potential

Plattsburgh State Women's Cross Country continues to be a program whose student-athletes strive to reach their full potential. Since 1990, 28 Cardinal runners have broken the 20-minute mark in competition, including 16 sub-19-minute performances and a team-best 17:18 mark by Toni Wiszowaty, set in 2006.  Also, since the NCAA championship Meet went to a distance of 6 kilometers seven Cardinals have broken 24 minutes and five have been under 23 minutes. The team's best time, held by Wiszowaty, is at 21:21.

As a team, the Cardinals last won the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship in 1999, but have sent several runners to the NCAA Championship meet. Nine Cardinals have earned SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame honors, and six have received the highest honor in our sport--All-America status--with Busby tabbed in 2005 and 2007, Wiszowaty in 2006 and 2007, and Alyssa Recny in 2007.

In addition, Plattsburgh State has qualified as a team for the NCAA Championships:  placing 26th in 2006 and second for a school record in 2007.

The women's cross country team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement and community service. They have excelled in this area earning the Plattsburgh State Vision Award in 2006 and 2007.
