Media Guide Cover Voted Best in the Nation
PHILADELPHIA - The Plattsburgh State 2007-08 men's and women's ice hockey guide covers were judged Best in the Nation by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Sports Information Office of Director Patrick Stewart and Assistant Director Kerry Chapin will be formally recognized during a publications awards ceremony on July 2 at the CoSIDA Workshop Convention in Tampa, Fla. CoSIDA CONTEST RESULTS
The Cardinals' sports information office was the lone representative honored by CoSIDA to receive national certificates in the entire SUNY system, including the State University of New York Athletic Conference membership. The two certificates match the school's best output since last season when the men's soccer and women's hockey guide covers were voted Best in the Nation in Division C, including 400-plus NCAA Division III and junior college institutions.
The cover concept was created by Stewart and Chris Boire of Boire Design perfected the full-color layout. The women's guide, featuring All-Americans Julie Devereux and Danielle Blanchard sandwiching the program's first NCAA championship trophy on a red-bleed cover, was entered in the Single-Sport Category. The cover took first place in Division C while the book itself was 21st despite being combined with Division A-B, which includes NCAA Division I and II programs. Like women's hockey, the men's hockey book--with the leadership group of C.J. Tozzo, Tom Breslin, Joey Wilson, Nick Rolls and T.J. Cooper on the cover--was grouped with larger schools to end up fifth overall but won Division C cover laurels. (Click on cover for online version of men's hockey media guide)
Stewart has garnered 24 CoSIDA certificates for publications and writing excellence, including 13 Best in the Nation plaudits. Chapin earns her third award of her three-year sports information career. Boire also worked on Plattsburgh's Best Cover citations for 2004 Women's Soccer, 2003-04 Men's Hockey, 2006 Men's Soccer and 2006-07 Women's Hockey.
Plattsburgh's other national rankings in the CoSIDA publications contest for this academic year include Men's Soccer book, 16th; Women's Soccer book, 16th; Women's Basketball book, 23rd; Men's Basketball book, 27th; Cross Country/Track Multi-Sport Guide, 20th; and Women's Volleyball, 32nd.

Cardinals Suffer First Shutout of the Season
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (March 23, 2008) -
Top-ranked Saint Norbert College defeated No. 2 Plattsburgh State, 2-0, Sunday in the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship at 1980 Herb Brooks Arena. Saint Norbert (27-1-4) captures its first national title in three Finals games, ending the season on a 29-game unbeaten streak for the longest in NCAA all-Divisions, men or women, in 2007-08. Two-time NCAA champion Plattsburgh (25-5) lost for only the third time since December, and was appearing in its NCAA-record 16th Division III tournament and second-leading 10th Frozen Four. BOXSCORE
Scott Pulak gave the Green Knights a 1-0 lead 5 minutes and 53 seconds into the second period with the assists credited to Nick Tabisz and Ryan Petersen. Marc Belanger scored almost five minutes later to make it 2-0, with Matt Boyd and Tabisz assisting on the play.
Plattsburgh had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard moments later after Pete Fylling was whistled for a major hitting from behind penalty and game misconduct, but the Cardinals couldn't score during the 5-minute power play. Plattsburgh has one of the nation's best units with the man-advantage at 29.4 percent for third place coming into today's contest.
Early in the third period, Plattsburgh's penalty-killing unit kept the game within reach when they killed-off a 5-on-3 opportunity for SNC after Ward Smith and Andrew Willock were both sent off for hooking and slashing with 45 seconds left in the previous stanza.
Bryan Hince stopped 28 of 30 shots for Plattsburgh while Kyle Jones made all 32 saves for his 25th career shutout in a SNC uniform.
Plattsburgh--making its first appearance in the Division III Finals since 2001--falls to 2-2 in NCAA championship games. The Cardinals suffered only their second shutout loss in an NCAA Tournament game during Bob Emery's 19-year, 40-game coaching helm.
"I told our players that the coaching staff was really proud of them. We had a good season since nobody expected us to get this far," Emery said after the game. "People in our league picked us second and we ended up winning the SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Conference) regular-season and tournament championships. Our senior leadership of Mike Baccaro, T.J. Cooper and C.J. Tozzo has been outstanding all season. To finish as one of the top two teams out of 70 schools in the nation is an accomplishment.
"We definitely have a lot to look forward to next season. We have a good nucleus coming back, starting with the goaltending. We can build the team around Bryan Hince, no doubt about it.
"I give Saint Norbert all the credit. They're one of the best defensive teams I've ever seen. We had our scoring chances, and they capitalized on the two goals that they had," he said.

Coach's Corner
Coach Bob Emery:
"The best thing about this program is working toward and meeting the challenge of high expectations. Winning has been fun in the past, but what happens is that you establish your own high-water mark. With that comes high expectations on an annual level, from the team, the coaches and the fans. Historically, we've been able to meet those expectations.
"All our returning players know what is expected of them and of the program. When you talk about our top guys, they realize that if they don't meet expectations they won't have fun. To do that, they have to enjoy the game first. All of our freshman must be prepared to make an immediate impact. There is an adjustment to college hockey, some guys make it faster not necessarily even the best players but all players have to work hard to raise their level of play to where we are."
A Traditional National Power
Success at the highest level is expected in Cardinal Country. The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team's tradition of success is well documented and well known throughout the hockey world. The team has competed in the NCAA Tournament 16 times since the team started in 1975, advanced to the Final Four 12 times and won two National Championships (1992, 2001).
Individually, Plattsburgh boasts 18 All-Americans, with six of those student-athletes earning All-America honors two times. After finishing their collegiate careers, many Cardinal Hockey players use their experience garnered at Plattsburgh State to play professional hockey, evidenced by over 50 former Cardinals that have played or are currently playing professional hockey.
The Cardinals play in the 3,500-seat Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, one of the finest facilities for NCAA College Division Hockey in the Nation. The Stafford Arena has been host to three NCAA Championships, international exhibitions, and was originally used for the World University Games. The Cardinals regularly draw over 2,000 fans per game, including 10 record-setting attendance marks over 3,500, and the team has led the nation in total attendance six times since 1996.
The team competes in one of the top athletic conferences in the nation, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), and the conference champion gains automatic entry into the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The men's ice hockey team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, and community service.
