Moberg Leads Plattsburgh to Sweep of Cortland
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Senior co-captain Stephanie Moberg scored three goals as part of a four-point afternoon to pace the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team to a 6-1 victory Saturday against visiting Cortland in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division game. The Cardinals have won eight straight--and 10-0-1 in their last 11 starts--to improve to 17-1-1 overall and 14-0-1 in the ECAC West. The Red Dragons are now 4-15-1 and 3-10-1 in the league. BOXSCORE
Plattsburgh overpowered Cortland in all phases of the game besides the final score, holding a commanding 50 to 9 shots on goal advantage and 48 face-off wins in 65 draws.
The Cardinals led 2-1 after the first period on Moberg's first two goals of the day. Cortland tied it at 1 on Jeanna Dippel's first goal of the season on a feed from Chelsey Wright at the 7:03 mark.
Kate Fairfield made it 3-1 midway through the second period, and Plattsburgh got some breathing room with three goals in a 7-minute, 18-second span in the third. Megan DiJulio netted her team-best 18th, a power play goal, 5:05 into the final period.
Fairfield, Teal Gove and Brittany Meade joined Moberg--who appeared in her 99th game wearing a red and white uniform--with a multi-point outing.

Cardinals Slay Red Dragons Behind Moon Line
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Junior center Steph Moon notched a career-high five points, including four assists, to help lead top-ranked Plattsburgh State to an 8-1 thumping of Cortland in Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey action on Friday at the Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals extend their record to 16-1-1 overall (13-0-1 ECAC-West) while the Red Dragons drop to 4-14-1 (3-9-1). BOXSCORE
Moon's linemates Laurie Bowler and Megan DiJulio also shined with four and three points, respectively. Bowler scored two goals in the first period to help the Cardinals forge a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. She recorded her 10th of the year just 1 minute and 34 seconds into the game, and then added No. 11 just 15 seconds after Cortland tied it at 1-1. DiJulio scored her team-leading 16th and 17th goals in the third period.
Bowler moved into sixth place on the Plattsburgh career scoring list with 111 points, surpassing Jessica Moreau who had 109 from 2003-07.
Danielle Scharf scored the Red Dragons' lone goal--her fifth on the year--at the 15:26 mark of the first period. Maggie Giamo and Erika Osborne were credited with the assists.
Plattsburgh blew the game wide open with three goals in the second period. Moon and Jordan Caldwell, twice, found the back of the net for a 6-1 cushion.
The Cardinals went 2-for-5 on the power play and outshot the Red Dragons by a 46 to 11 margin.

ECAC West Honors Cardinals; Plattsburgh Jumps to No. 1 Again
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference on Monday announced that Plattsburgh State forwards Megan DiJulio and Jordan Caldwell have been named the (co-)player and rookie of the week, respectively, for the period ending Sunday. A junior from Slave Lake, Alberta/Warner Warriors Hockey School, DiJulio led the team with four goals and tied for the lead with six points in a week that saw the Cardinals go 3-0 overall, 2-0 in ECAC West play. She assumed the role as Plattsburgh's top goal-scorer with 15 and is second with 21 points. This signals the first time in her career that she has earned conference player of the week honors.
Caldwell, a freshman out of Arvada, Colo./Colorado Selects U-19, registered four points, including three assists, to improve season scoring totals of 3+9=12. She paces the Plattsburgh first-year players with nine assists and 12 points. She also received similar ECAC-West honors on Nov. 17, and this marks the fourth time in 11 weeks that a Plattsburgh freshman has been named.
In other news, Plattsburgh returns to the top spot in the new NCAA Division III women's hockey poll released by Minneapolis-based USCHO.com.
The Cardinals received 14 of 15 first-place votes and 149 points to supplant previous No. 1 Amherst (which has one 1st-place vote and 132 points). Plattsburgh downed Norwich, 7-2, in the first meeting ever between the programs on Tuesday and then swept ECAC-West foe Buffalo State on the road by a combined 12-0 score during the weekend, while the Lord Jeffs split a two-game series at Colby on Friday and Saturday.
Plattsburgh (15-1-1 overall, 12-0-1 ECAC-West) owns the nation's longest current unbeaten streak of nine games, going 8-0-1 since suffering its only loss of the season to defending NCAA champion Amherst on Jan. 3. The Cardinals are No. 1 in the national rankings for the first time since a two-week stay that ended on Jan. 4.

Plattsburgh Gets Another Shutout Win at Buffalo State
BUFFALO - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team blanked host Buffalo State for the second day in a row, this time by a score of 2-0 on Saturday at the Bengal Ice Arena. The nationally No. 2-ranked Cardinals move to 15-1-1 overall, including 12-0-1 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division. The Bengals fall to 8-10-1 and 5-7-1 in the ECAC-West after getting swept this weekend by a combined 12-0 score to Plattsburgh. BOXSCORE
Anne Loewen made 14 stops to chalk up her second shutout this season and the fourth of her career.
Stephanie Moberg scored her 12th goal with 5 minutes and 34 seconds remaining in the first period. Jordan Caldwell and Erica Pomponio were credited with the assists. After a scoreless second period by both teams, Plattsburgh added an insurance tally in the third off the stick of Brittany Meade on a feed from Moberg. The short-handed goal came with 8:48 left.
Alyssa Koniar of Buffalo State kept her team in the contest with 34 saves to receive Third Star of the Game honors.
Plattsburgh had a 36 to 14 shots on goal advantage.

Cardinals Clobber Bengals on the Road
BUFFALO - Steph Moon scored the first of her two goals just 1 minute and 10 seconds after the game's opening face-off to set the tone for a Plattsburgh State 10-0 whitewashing of host Buffalo State in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey game at the Bengal Ice Arena on Friday. The 10 goals and margin of victory are both Plattsburgh season bests. The Cardinals held a 37-15 shots on goal advantage.
Leading 2-0 after the opening stanza, Plattsburgh blew the game wide open with a six-goal second period as the Cardinals outshot Buffalo State 21 to 1.
Mandy Mackrell made 15 stops to earn her third shutout of the season and sixth of her career.
Erika Shaubel (3 assists) and Megan DiJulio (2 goals-1 assist) also shined for the Cardinals, who are unbeaten in their last eight (7-0-1) games.

Plattsburgh Cruises Past Norwich in First Meeting Between Programs
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Megan DiJulio scored twice and assisted on another goal to propel the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team to a 7-2 non-conference victory Tuesday against Norwich, marking the first-ever meeting between the schools. Reigning Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division player of the week Laurie Bowler continued her hot streak with three assists to help Plattsburgh turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 advantage early in the second period. Bowler, who appeared in her 100th career collegiate game tonight, has eight goals and five assists for 13 points in her last nine contests. Steph Moon and DiJulio benefited from a Bowler pass during the Cardinals' four unanswered goals in a span of 18 minutes and 21 seconds.
Norwich scored both of its goals while on the power play. Kelsey Cone put the visitors up 1-0 midway through the first period on a feed from Sarianne Lynn. Melissa Rundlett brought the Cadets to within 4-2 at the midpoint of the second with her sixth goal of the season. Sophie Leclerc and Julie Fortier were credited with assists on the play.
Kate Fairfield (2 goals), Kayla McDougall (1 goal-1 assist) and Moon (1 goal-1 assist) also had a multi-point game for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh outshot Norwich 39 to 15 for the game.

ECAC-West Recognizes Bowler Tying NCAA Power Play Record

Bowler scored four of Plattsburgh's nine goals on the weekend to help the Cardinals sweep then-No. 4-ranked Rochester Tech at home by scores of 4-3 and 5-2. She scored a power play goal in Friday's one-goal win to tie the NCAA Division III all-time record of 29, giving her 100 career points. Then she scored a hat-trick in Saturday's three-goal victory.
Bowler is a senior co-captain from Brantford, Ontario (Burlington Barracudas). She has career scoring totals of 66+37=103 in 99 games.

Cardinals Complete Sweep of RIT behind Bowler Hat-Trick
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Less than 24 hours getting her 100th point, senior co-captain Laurie Bowler followed up that performance on Saturday afternoon with three goals to propel nationally No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh State to a 5-2 victory against Rochester Tech in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey game at the Stafford Ice Arena, completing a weekend sweep of the fourth-rated Tigers. Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead midway through the first despite getting outshot 14 to 5 in the period, with Kristen Bond feeding Bowler for her first goal of the game.
Bowler and Megan DiJulio made it 3-0 in the second period before RIT got on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal from Katie Stack just 6 seconds left.
In the third period, the teams traded unassisted tallies by Megan Kobar and Bowler before Plattsburgh's Brittany Meade had an empty-net goal on an assist by Kate Fairfield to close the scoring at the 19:37 mark.
RIT outshot Plattsburgh 32-25 for the game and both teams went 1-for-8 on the power play.
Mandy Mackrell, who had a career- and Plattsburgh season-high 32 saves on Friday, stopped 30 shots in this contest.

Bowler Notches 100th Career Point as Cards Edge RIT
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Laurie Bowler recorded her 100th career point to help the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team eke out a 4-3 victory Friday over visiting Rochester Tech in Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division action at the Stafford Ice Arena. The nationally No. 3-ranked Cardinals improve to 11-1-1 overall and strengthen their first-place grip in the conference standings at 9-0-1, while the No. 4 Tigers fall to 10-3-3 and 5-2-2. BOXSCORE
Defenseman Erika Shaubel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 3 minutes and 11 seconds into the third period, giving Plattsburgh a commanding 4-1 advantage. The Cardinals were skating with an extra attacker as RIT was being called for a delayed penalty when Shaubel blasted a slap shot from the right point over the left shoulder of goaltender Amy Torgerson.
The Tigers scored two goals 1:07 apart in the final 2 minutes of the game to make things interesting, but couldn't get the equalizer to force overtime. Melissa Hall scored her eighth goal of the season and Katie Stack her league-best 17th to make it a 4-3 score.
Bowler's milestone came 1:31 into the final period when she banged home her sixth goal from the slot on a nice feed from the back of the net by Steph Moon. Bowler becomes the second Cardinal this season and seventh in school history to reach 100 career points. She now has 63 goals and 37 assists in 98 games in a red and white uniform.
Stephanie Moberg and Megan DiJulio helped give Plattsburgh a 2-1 lead after two periods.
RIT outshot Plattsburgh 35 to 24, including an 11-4 margin in a scoreless first stanza. The Cardinals' Mandy Mackrell made a career-high 32 saves, including a glove stop off the stick of Kim Schlattman from point-blank range just seconds after the game's opening faceoff--one of three shots on the RIT power play as a result of a Plattsburgh protocol violation before the game even began--to keep it 0-0.

Gove Repeats as ECAC West Rookie of the Week
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - For the second week in a row, Teal Gove of the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team has been honored as the rookie of the week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division, the league announced on Monday.

A freshman forward from Berwick, Ontario, Gove scored a goal and an assist in Plattsburgh's 5-0 win at Division II Saint Anselm on Friday, tying her single-game career high of two points. She also had two shots and a plus-2 rating. For the season, she leads Cardinals freshman with six goals and nine points.
In other Cardinal hockey news, the women are ranked third again in this week's Division III poll released today by USCHO.com. Plattsburgh picked up a first-place vote among 124 points, behind No. 1 and national champion Amherst (147 points, 12 first-place votes) and Elmira (132, 2). The second-ranked Soaring Eagles were swept in Plattsburgh on Nov. 21-22, 3-2 and 4-3 in overtime.

Trio Leads Plattsburgh to Shutout Win at Saint Anselm
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team tuned up for a conference showdown with Rochester Tech next weekend with a 5-0 win Friday night at NCAA Division II Saint Anselm at Sullivan Arena. The Cardinals, who are ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division III national rankings, improve to 10-1-1 overall after stretching their regular-season non-conference unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) since the 2007-08 season. Teal Gove, Brittany Meade and Jordan Caldwell all accounted for a goal and an assist as Plattsburgh built a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The Cardinals, who outshot Saint Anselm 43 to 17 for the game, added two goals by Helen Giroux and Gove in the second period before both teams were scoreless in the third.
Plattsburgh goalie Anne Loewen made 17 saves to improve to 3-0 while earning her first shutout this season.
Amy Zappen came off the Saint Anselm bench to play the last 33 minutes and 12 seconds, stopping all 27 shots she faced.

Gove Named ECAC West Rookie of the Week
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Plattsburgh State freshman forward Teal Gove was named Monday as the rookie of the week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division in women's ice hockey. This marks the first award of her career and joins Jordan Caldwell (Nov. 17) as Cardinals named to the list this season.

The Berwick, Ontario, product scored three of Plattsburgh's nine goals to help the Cardinals take an ECAC West series from Utica on the road, winning Friday's game 6-1 before a 3-3 overtime tie on Saturday. In the series finale, she scored with 47 seconds left in regulation for her second goal of the day to tie the game and help avoid a loss against the Pioneers.

Gove Scores Twice as Plattsburgh Forges Tie at Utica
UTICA, N.Y. - Freshman Teal Gove scored her second goal of the game with 47 seconds left in regulation to lift second-ranked Plattsburgh State to a 3-3 tie at Utica in Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey action on Saturday. Neither team could find the back of the net in the 5-minute overtime. The Cardinals (9-1-1 overall, 8-0-1 ECAC-West) completed their spring semester-opening conference series on a good note by getting three points on the road out of a possible four--this, following a 6-1 win last night. The game's first three goals came via the power play during the first period. The visiting Cardinals took a 1-0 lead by Laurie Bowler after 5 minutes and 21 seconds had elapsed before Lynny Gonzales tied it at the 15:55 mark. But Gove's first goal on the day put Plattsburgh back in front, 2-1, with 16 seconds remaining.
Plattsburgh peppered the Pioneer goal all game long, 52-22. The count was 17-5 in the first and 18-0 in the third, as well as 3-1 in the overtime.
However, Utica (7-5-2, 4-3-2) outshot the Cardinals by a slim 16-14 margin in the second period when the Pioneers went ahead 3-2 on goals from Tiffany Bichrest and Darcy Hier.
Mandy Mackrell recorded 19 saves for Plattsburgh while Jill Doherty stopped 49 shots.

Women's Hockey Dominates Utica in ECAC West Face-Off
UTICA, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team, ranked No. 2 nationally, easily topped Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division foe Utica, winning the game 6-1 on the Pioneers home ice.
The Cardinals, now on a two-game win-streak, improve to 9-1-0 for the season, 8-0 in the ECAC West, while Utica drops to 7-5-1 overall, 4-3-1 in conference play.
Steph Moon scored the first goal of the night for the Cardinals just over three minutes into play. She was assisted by Kara Buehler and Erika Shaubel. Teal Gove would put the Cardinals ahead, 2-0, 11 minutes later when she scored after receiving the puck from Jordan Caldwell.
Erica Pomponio, Megan DiJulio and Stephanie Moberg would all score for Plattsburgh in the second period. Pomponio's goal, arriving at 1:34 into the period, was her first career goal and was assisted by Britt McKegg. Brittany Meade assisted on DiJulio's goal, while Laurie Bowler and Caldwell racked up an assist each on Moberg's.
Mackenzie Lee scored Plattsburgh's final goal of the game at the beginning of the third period. She was assisted on the play by Kristen Bond.
Utica's lone goal was made by Andrea Maxon with a little over two minutes left to go. Samantha Glockling provided Maxon with the puck.
In goal, Mandy Mackrell played all 60 minutes and made a total of 17 saves for Plattsburgh. Jill Doherty and Laurel Simer split time for the Pioneers, with Doherty making 14 saves and allowing five goals in the first 27 minutes and Simer recording 13 saves with one goal allowed in the last 33 minutes of play.
Plattsburgh stays overnight to take on Utica once more tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Cardinals Bounce Back to Dispatch Middlebury in Classic Third Place Game
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Newly-ranked No. 2 Plattsburgh State scored three times in the final 2 minutes and 44 seconds to break a 1-1 deadlock to down host Middlebury 4-1 in the third-place game of the Panther-Cardinal Women's Hockey Classic at Kenyon Arena on Monday. The Cardinals improve to 8-1 while Middlebury drops to 5-2, and No. 1 Amherst lost to Elmira in the championship by a 2-1 score. Megan DiJulio tipped Erika Shaubel's slap shot from the point for the game-winning goal past Panther goaltender Lani Wright at the 17:26 mark of the third period. After Middlebury pulled Wright in favor of an extra attacker with about a minute left, Plattsburgh got some insurance with empty-net goals by DiJulio and Brittany Meade 20 seconds apart.
Stephanie Moberg gave Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. Moberg scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season (tied with DiJulio) on a feed by Kate Fairfield. Julia Ireland tied it with her third goal on a pass from Madison Styrbicki 6:52 into the final stanza.
Wright was stellar for the Panthers--who were outshot 19-4 in the first period and down only 1-0 after 20 minutes--by making 31 saves.
Mandy Mackrell also had a strong game for Plattsburgh with 18 stops. Adding two assists, Moberg finished with a three-point night.

Cardinals Lose First Game of Season to Defending NCAA Champion Amherst
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team began the spring semester on Sunday with a 2-1 setback at the hands of No. 2 Amherst in the second semifinal of the Panther-Cardinal Classic hosted by Middlebury College at Kenyon Arena. The No. 3-rated host Panthers fell to No. 5 Elmira 3-2 in overtime in the other semifinal game. Amherst will play the Soaring Eagles for the championship on Monday at 4 p.m., followed by the third-place game between Middlebury and Plattsburgh at 7 p.m. BOXSCORE
Randi Zukas scored the game-winning goal with 4 minutes and 48 seconds left in the game on assists by Alyssa Chwick and Emily Vitale. Plattsburgh (7-1) pulled goaltender Mandy Mackrell in favor of an extra attacker with 25 seconds remaining, but couldn't get the equalizer.
After Brittney Evans' first goal of the season in the first period gave Amherst (6-0-2) a 1-0 advantage, Laurie Bowler tied it on a feed from Steph Moon midway through the third.
Mackrell made 26 saves to keep the Cardinals within striking distance.
Amherst also had the advantage in shots on goal (28 to 10) to trigger the following facts in Plattsburgh history: the first time the Cardinals have been outshot this season, the fewest attempted (9) since a 3-1 loss at Clarkson on Feb. 15, 2005, and the widest margin allowed (20) since a 2-2 overtime tie at Elmira on Feb. 3, 2002.

Cardinals Ascend to No. 1; Two Skaters Earn ECAC-West Weekly Awards
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - On the strength of an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division sweep of Neumann University by a combined 13-0 score, the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team saw center Stephanie Moberg receive player of the week and Mandy Mackrell goaltender of the week honors from the conference, for the period ending Sunday. A senior co-captain from Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (Northwood School), Moberg had a five-point weekend--including a team-best four goals--to surpass 100 for her career, becoming the sixth Cardinal to reach that milestone. She had two goals and an assist in Saturday's 6-0 win against the Knights, and followed up that performance with two goals on Sunday to finish off the Knights, 7-0. She added 11 shots on goal and a plus-8 rating. She now has 102 points on 41 goals and 61 assists in her 88-game career.
Mackrell, a junior from Cleveland, Ohio, posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time in her career, compiling 42 saves versus Neumann. She lowered her goals-against average from 1.99 to 1.20, which ranks second in the ECAC West. She also tops the league with a .943 save percentage and 1.000 winning percentage (5-0). She picks up the conference award for the second time in three weeks.
In addition, junior forward Brittany Meade (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) was recognized on the Honor Roll for player of the week consideration. She recorded the best two-game stretch of her career by leading the team with seven points on two goals (one for a power play) and five assists, to go along with four shots on goal and plus-8 rating. She is now tied for first on the team with eight assists and 11 points in only six games, both already career highs to go along with a personal-best three goals.
In other Cardinal hockey news, Plattsburgh has supplanted defending national champion Amherst (4-0-1) atop the NCAA Division III national rankings by USCHO.com. The Cardinals tallied 144 points, including 10 first-place votes, while the Lord Jeffs received 137 points and five first-place nods. This marks Plattsburgh's first No. 1 ranking since last Jan. 19. Amherst started the season at No. 1 for five weeks in a row before a 1-0-1 week against Trinity (Conn.) at home dropped the Lord Jeffs out of the top spot.

Plattsburgh heads into the New Year with a 7-0 overall and ECAC-West record, the first time in school history that the team is undefeated and untied going into the Christmas Break. The Cardinals are wrapping up the fall semester with final exams this week, and will be idle until Jan. 3-4 when they travel to Middlebury, Vt., for the annual Panther-Cardinal Classic. Part of the team's success so far this season has been its balance: 14 different players have accounted for the team's 37 goals, and all but two skaters have at least one point.

Plattsburgh Blanks Neumann to Close Out Calendar Year
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Brittany Meade had four points and Stephanie Moberg scored two goals to pace Plattsburgh State to a 7-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey victory over Neumann at the Stafford Ice Arena on Sunday, completing a two-game sweep of the visiting Knights by a combined 13-0 score. Moberg finished the weekend with five points to increase her career total to 102 points, becoming the sixth Cardinal to eclipse that milestone. She has scored 41 goals and 61 assists in 88 games.
Megan DiJulio provided all the offense that the Cardinals would need with her sixth goal of the season midway through the first period, coming on the power play. She was assisted by Steph Moon and Erika Shaubel.
Plattsburgh put the game away with three goals each in the second and third periods. Meade made it 3-0 on the power play at the 12:10 mark of the second period for her third goal.
In addition to Meade and Moberg, Moon (2 assists), Shaubel (2a), Mackenzie Lee (1 goal, 1 assist) and DiJulio (1g-1a) enjoyed a multi-point afternoon.
Mandy Mackrell stopped all 23 shots she faced to post back-to-back shutouts for the first time in her career. Laura Keeley made 33 saves for Neumann, which was outshot by a 40 to 23 margin.
The Cardinals will now turn their attention to final exam week to complete the fall semester. They will return to game action on Jan. 3-4 for the Panther/Cardinal Classic hosted by Middlebury (Vt.) College.

Moberg, Buehler Power Plattsburgh Past Knights
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Stephanie Moberg scored two goals, Kara Buehler had a career-best four assists and Mandy Mackrell made 19 saves to lead the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team to a 6-0 victory Saturday over visiting Neumann University in Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division action at the Stafford Ice Arena. Moberg's two points give her 99 for her 87-game career in a Cardinals uniform. She has 39 goals and 60 assists. Buehler missed a school single-game record by one assist.
The teams skated to a scoreless, penalty-free first period despite Plattsburgh's huge 23-7 shots on goal advantage. But the Cardinals broke through 8 minutes and 33 seconds into the second period while on the power play when defenseman Erika Shaubel's shot from the right point deflected off a Neumann player and into the net. Laurie Bowler made it 2-0 5:23 later, and Moberg notched her first of two goals on the night with just 54 seconds left to make it 3-0.
Plattsburgh iced the game with three more goals in the third period by Moberg at the 0:49 mark, Brittany Meade at 11:02 and Teal Gove at 15:39.
Shannon Donnelly had 46 saves for the Knights, who have been outscored 10-3 in two road games. Mackrell posted her first shutout of the season and her fourth overall.
Plattsburgh outshot the Neumann for the game, 52-19. The Cardinals went 1-for-5 on the power play and killed off all three man-advantages by the Knights.

Skate with the Cards on Dec. 5
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The annual Skate with the Cards will be held at the Plattsburgh State Field House on Saturday from 2-3 p.m. In addition to an appearance from Santa, team members from both the Cardinal men’s and women’s hockey teams will be in attendance. Hot chocolate, coffee and cookies will be available. The cost is $2 for the public and $1 for all students and faculty with a Plattsburgh State ID. All proceeds will be donated to the Clinton County Christmas Bureau. The event is sponsored by the Plattsburgh State Athletic Dept., the Angell College Center and Chartwells dining services.

Newly-Crowned No. 2 Stifles Bears on the Road
POTSDAM, N.Y. - Helen Giroux scored the first of her two goals on Tuesday just 56 seconds after the opening faceoff as the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team pounded host Potsdam State, 9-3, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division game at Maxcy Hall Ice Arena. The Cardinals, who were voted the second-ranked NCAA Division III program in this week's poll, improve to 5-0 overall--all ECAC West games. Plattsburgh exhibited a balanced offense as seven other players found the back of the net: Kristen Bond, Michelle Gatien, Kayla McDougall, Shannon Flattery, Teal Gove, Megan DiJulio and Stephanie Moberg. The freshmen trio of Gatien, Flattery and Gove scored their first collegiate goals. McDougall added two assists for a three-point night and Natalie Aldridge chipped in two assists.
The Cardinals built a 5-0 lead and were never seriously threatened.
Monique Gagner, Amanda King and Nicky Bougie scored for the Bears, who were outshot 45 to 8.

Mackrell Named ECAC-West Goalie of the Week; Cardinals Move Up in National Rankings
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Plattsburgh State junior Mandy Mackrell on Tuesday has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division Goaltender of the Week, for the period ending Sunday. Mackrell, of Cleveland, Ohio, backstopped the nationally-ranked Cardinals to a pair of one-goal victories against then-No. 2 and defending conference champion Elmira, compiling a 2.48 goals-against average and 44 saves in 121 minutes and 3 seconds of action. She had a career-high 26 saves in a 3-2 win Saturday, including several shots from point-blank range in the third period when Plattsburgh was outshot 15-6 and Elmira was desperate to tie the game. It marks her first-ever victories over Elmira, which was also defeated on Sunday by a 4-3 score in overtime.
In other Cardinal hockey news, Plattsburgh climbs two spots to No. 2 in the NCAA Division III poll compiled by USCHO.com, which was released on Monday. Moon Scores OT Game-Winner as Plattsburgh Sweeps Elmira
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Steph Moon scored the game-winning goal 1 minute and 3 seconds into overtime to lift No. 4 Plattsburgh State to a 4-3 upset Sunday of second-ranked Elmira in Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey action at the Stafford Ice Arena. Moon tallied her second of the season when Kristin Maton fed a centering pass from the left side to Moon, who was rushing to the front of the Elmira goal.
Plattsburgh forced the five-minute extra session when Brittany Meade scored her first goal of the season with 3:14 left in regulation, tying the game at 3-3.
Jillayne DeBus had given the Soaring Eagles a 3-2 lead with 3:43 remaining in the second period. The goal was her second on the year and it came on the power play.
The teams were knotted at 2-all after 20 minutes. Alex Bresler and Tiffany Hart scored for the Soaring Eagles, and Megan DiJulio led the Cardinals with two goals in the first.
Plattsburgh outshot Elmira 36 to 21 for the game, including a 16-5 margin in a scoreless second stanza. Samantha Maguire had 32 saves for Elmira and Mandy Mackrell stopped 18 shots for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals now lead the all-time series 15-13-3 after trailing 3-10-1 before the 2005-06 campaign.

Plattsburgh Hangs on to Edge Elmira in ECAC West Showdown
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Mackenzie Lee and Kayla McDougall scored their first goals of the season 14 seconds apart late in the second period as Plattsburgh State hung on for a thrilling 3-2 victory Saturday over Elmira in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division showdown of nationally ranked teams at the Stafford Ice Arena. Plattsburgh's Mandy Mackrell made her first career start against the defending conference champion Soaring Eagles and made a career-high 26 saves to earn Turfer Athletic First Star of the Game honors. She stopped all 15 shots she faced in the third period--some from point-blank range--to keep the Cardinals in front.
All the scoring was done in the second period. Erika Shaubel ripped a slap shot from the right point on the blueline to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead 4 minutes and 11 seconds gone, scoring her first goal of the season on the power play. Caitlin Metcalf equalized with her first on the year 6:21 later before Lee and McDougall put the Cardinals ahead for good, 3-1. Lindsay Mitchell pulled Elmira within 3-2 on a power play goal with 30 seconds remaining.
Samantha Maguire had 26 saves for Elmira, including 11 in the first period to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
Stephanie Moberg added two assists for Plattsburgh, which outshot Elmira by a 29-28 margin. Mitchell had an assist on Metcalf's tally for a two-point night on the Soaring Eagles' side.

Freshman Caldwell Snatches ECAC West Rookie of the Week Honors

A freshman forward from Arvada, Colo. (Colorado Selects), Caldwell scored her first career goal while on the power play in No. 4 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh's 4-1 victory at Chatham on Sunday. She scored her first career point in her second collegiate game.
Caldwell is the first Cardinals freshman to receive the conference's rookie of the week award since Danielle Roberts on Nov. 18, 2008.

No. 4 Plattsburgh Sweeps Chatham on the Road to Begin Season
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team began the 2009-10 campaign this weekend with an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division road sweep with Chatham College by identical 4-1 scores. On Saturday evening, the No. 4 nationally-ranked Cardinals scored three goals in the final period to break a 1-1 tie. Stephanie Moberg, Megan DiJulio and Kristen Bond all found the back of the net in the opening 7 minutes and 13 seconds of the third period, capping a string of four unanswered goals for the Cardinals. DiJulio ended up with two goals in the game.
Dawson Bancroft-Short put Chatham up 1-0 at 3:17 of the first period, with Sara Forbes getting the assist.
Mandy Mackrell had 14 saves for Plattsburgh while Brenn Scott kept the Cougars close with 56 stops.
On Sunday afternoon, Plattsburgh was led by two-point efforts from Moberg, Erika Shaubel and Brittany Meade.
Steph Moon scored a short-handed goal and Laurie Bowler added another on the power play to give the Cardinals a 2-0 first-period lead and all the offense they would need.
Leah McNaughton fed Lauren Campbell for a power play goal as Chatham cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 5:36 mark of the third period, but Jordan Caldwell scored her first collegiate goal--on the power play--2:14 later to restore the Cardinals' three-goal cushion.
Anne Loewen was victorious in the Plattsburgh net with 14 saves, and Scott compiled 47.

DiJulio, Bowler Power Cardinals Past Nepean in Exhibition Win
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Megan DiJulio scored two goals and Laurie Bowler added a goal and two assists as Plattsburgh State trounced visiting Nepean (Ontario), 6-0, in a women's hockey exhibition game on Sunday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena. The Junior Wildcats fall to 9-11-6 while statistics from today's contest do not count on the Cardinals' record due to NCAA rules.
Goalies Mandy Mackrell and Anne Loewen combined on the shutout. Mackrell made four saves over 32 minutes and 49 seconds before Loewen worked the last 27:11 and had nine stops.
Mati Barrett had 27 saves in the loss. Morgan Poole and Olivia Cook combined for six of the Wildcats' 13 shots.
Freshman Teal Gove got the Plattsburgh offense started with a goal 7:05 gone after the opening face-off. Brittany Meade and Jordan Caldwell assisted on the play.
Plattsburgh scored two goals in each period and outshot Nepean 33 to 13. The Cardinals went 2-for-4 on the power play and killed off all three attempts on the man-advantage by the Wildcats.
Kayla McDougall and Natalie Aldridge also scored for the Cardinals, who officially open the season Nov. 14-15 at Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division foe Chatham in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Plattsburgh Begins Season at No. 4 in Preseason National Rankings
MINNEAPOLIS - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team is nationally ranked in the No. 4 spot in the NCAA Division III preseason poll, released Monday by U.S. College Hockey Online. Defending champion Amherst is No. 1 with 135 points, including 11 first-place votes. Elmira and Gustavus Adolphus rank 2-3 with 115 and 112 points, respectively. The latter Gusties, who were given two first-place votes, were the year-end No. 1 in 2009.
Today's announcement puts Plattsburgh in unfamiliar territory in recent memory as the No. 4-ranking marks the lowest appearance in the preseason poll since it was fifth on Oct. 27, 2003. Other past preseason rankings are No. 1 in 2008-09 (15 1st-place votes, 150 points), No. 1 in 2007-08 (11, 110), No. 2 in 2006-07 (4, 120), No. 3 in 2005-06 (0, 108), No. 2 in 2004-05 (2, 110), No. 5 in 2003-04 (0, 68), No. 7 in 2002-03 (0, 36) and "receiving votes" (1 point) category in 2001-02, the first year of women's hockey at Plattsburgh.
For the Cardinals, they return 15 players off last year's squad that went 22-5-2 overall, 15-3 in conference play for third place and made the NCAA tournament for the sixth straight time. The program has won two of the last three NCAA championships and finished in first place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division in five of the past six seasons. Kevin Houle enters his seventh season at the helm and is the NCAA's all-Divisions winningest active coach with an .838 winning percentage on a 143-24-9 career record. Senior forward Stephanie Moberg was an AHCA All-America First Team selection in 2009, racking up career highs of 18 goals and 39 points to lead the Cardinals in both categories. Besides Moberg, senior forward Laurie Bowler will serve as 2010 team captains; Bowler had 14+13=27 scoring totals a season ago.
ECAC West opponent Rochester Tech was predicted to finish ahead of Plattsburgh in the annual conference coaches' preseason poll, but the sixth-ranked Tigers trailed the Cardinals in the USCHO.com ratings.
Plattsburgh hosts the Nepean Wildcats in an exhibition game at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, and kicks off the 2009-10 campaign officially on Nov. 14-15 at conference foe Chatham

Cardinals Picked for Third in ECAC-West Preseason Poll
CAPE COD, Mass. - Plattsburgh State earned 85 points and was predicted to finish in third place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey preseason poll released on Tuesday by league officials. The balloting was conducted by the 10 head coaches in the ECAC West.
The Cardinals are anticipating 16 players returning off last season's squad that went 22-5-2 overall, including 15-3 in the conference, ended up third in the NCAA Division III national rankings and made their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2009-10 edition when Plattsburgh plays its annual Red/White game at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Cardinals will also host an exhibition against an opponent to be determined on Nov. 7 or 8. The team officially opens the season Nov. 14-15 at conference foe Chatham in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Rochester Tech, which lost to Plattsburgh in the 2009 ECAC West tournament quarterfinals, is pegged the team to beat this season. The Tigers compiled 131 points, including six first-place votes.
Defending conference champion Elmira edged the Cardinals for second place in the coaches' poll by only three points, receiving 88 to go along with four first-place votes.
The rest of the voting included: 4. Neumann, 71 points; 5. Utica, 55; 6. Oswego, 52; 7. Chatham, 36; 8. Potsdam, 27; 9. Cortland, 26; and 10. Buffalo State, 18.

Media Guide, Publication Cover Voted "Best in the Nation"
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Plattsburgh State Sports Information Office of Director Patrick Stewart (Ohio '89) and Assistant Director Julia Hada (Heidelberg '07) was honored recently at the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Convention held at the Mariott Rivercenter.
The sports information office received "Best in the Nation" laurels for publications and writing excellence during the 2008-09 academic year from a national committee for Women's Hockey cover in the Single-Sport Category, Women's Hockey book in the Single-Sport Category and Softball cover. Plattsburgh's submissions were entered in Division C, which includes 400-plus NCAA Division III and junior college institutions.
The Cardinals' sports information office led the entire SUNY system – and was the lone representative in the State University of New York Athletic Conference membership – to receive the CoSIDA national certificates. The three certificates sets a school record for the most in a single year.
Chris Boire perfected the covers with conceptual guidance from the SID office and the sports' coaching staffs. The women's hockey cover – voted "Best in the Nation" three-years running – features the Cardinals' 2009 senior class and the program's 2007 and '08 national championship trophies. The book, increased to 32 pages, is chock full of player/coach biographies and expanded historical pages. The softball cover celebrated 10 years of the program sponsored as a varsity sport at Plattsburgh State, with a collage of action photos representing each season since 1999 that formed the number "10."

Stewart has garnered 27 CoSIDA publications and writing certificates, including 16 Best in the Nation plaudits. Hada, who was hired in November, earns her first three awards of her career. Boire also worked on Plattsburgh's Best Cover citations for 2004 Women's Soccer, 2003-04 and 2007-08 Men's Hockey, 2006 Men's Soccer, and 2006-07 and 2007-08 Women's Hockey.
Plattsburgh's other national rankings in the CoSIDA publications contest for this academic year include Softball book, 8th; Baseball book, 11th; Women's Soccer book, 13th; and Men's Soccer book, 16th.

Women's Hockey Announces 2009-10 Schedule
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team has released its schedule for the 2009-10 season, which includes most of the 25-game official NCAA slate being played in the friendly confines of the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Click here for the Cardinal hockey schedule
The team will be introduced during the annual Red and White game on Oct. 31, and then fans can see the Cardinals in a competitive setting a week later when Plattsburgh hosts the Ontario Hockey Academy (Nov. 7; 3 p.m.) in an exhibition contest. The OHA is a unique school for those who have aspirations of studying, training and playing hockey at the highest level, ensuring that their athletes get maximum exposure that comes with a 50-game schedule.
The season officially gets under way the weekend of Nov. 14-15 at Chatham in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division series played in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Plattsburgh's home opener is Nov. 21-22 against defending ECAC-West champion Elmira--one of four 2009 NCAA tournament teams that dot the slate. The Cardinals will also square off against defending national champion Amherst (Jan. 3), Middlebury (Feb. 10 and possibly Jan. 4 at the Panther/Cardinal Classic) and Norwich (Jan. 26). The Soaring Eagles of Elmira are also a potential matchup at the Panther/Cardinal Classic held in Middlebury, Vt.
After five straight games on the road to start the month of January, the Cardinals will enjoy a stretch when nine of their next 11 will be played at home. Rochester Tech comes to town on Jan. 22-23, followed by first-time opponent Norwich (Jan. 26), Cortland (Feb. 5-6), Middlebury (Feb. 10), Manhattanville (Feb. 13-14) and the finale against Potsdam (Feb. 16). Plattsburgh has compiled a 104-8-6 home record for an eye-popping .907 winning percentage.
Plattsburgh wraps up the regular season with a two-game conference series at Oswego (Feb. 19-20).
The ECAC West tournament to decide the conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs will take place with the quarterfinal round on Feb. 28 and the semifinals/championship on March 6-7. The top two teams receive a bye and the regular-season champion will earn the right to host the league's final four.
Plattsburgh has captured two of the last three NCAA crowns and seven ECAC West titles since 2004, and is coming off a 22-5-2 campaign.
