Seven Cardinals Make ECAC All-Academic List
Centerville, Mass. - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team set a program record this year by having seven student-athletes named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Women's West All-Academic Team. Previously, the record was set at six during the 2005-06 season. Plattsburgh ties Neumann College and Utica College as having the most representatives on the list this year.
To be named to the All-Academic team, the student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale and have completed at least one-half of her team's contests during the current season (a goaltender must have played at least 33 percent of her team's minutes).

Bywater, a criminal justice major, ended her career with the Cardinals with 35 goals and 48 assists for 83 points overall. Just this past season, she added eight goals and 13 assists to her total.
An early childhood education major, Brown contributed five goals and nine assists from the forward position during the year. She ended her career just like Bywater, with 35 goals and 48 assists.
Beattie, an economics major, posted a 17-3-2 record, 1.09 goals-against average, .937 save percentage and six shutouts. This season, she has moved into second place on the school's career shutouts list with 14 and is on pace to become the all-time leader in GAA and save percentage.
Moberg is a geography major at Plattsburgh and had a career year with 18 goals and 39 points while earning her first all-conference award. In league games only, she scored 13 goals and assisted on 14 others for 27 points.

Brien and Khan Participate in Gender & Sports Discussion Panel
"It's like what we told the girls before the [NCAA Division III] Tournament this year, you can't take anything for granted," commented Khan.
"Some girls would kill to be in our shoes," added Brien.
For many current female collegiate athletes, they are fulfilling a dream of their mothers who did not have the same or even any opportunities available to them in their late teens/early 20's like their daughters do now. This topic of gender and sports was covered in a recent roundtable discussion held by the Women's Studies Department and featured Brien and Khan, along with associate librarian Mina Su and athletics director Bruce Delventhal as speakers.
Su started the discussion by providing a historical look back at the governmental and legislative issues that have helped to shape and nurture women’s athletics, including the 1972 Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act, or Title IX.
"Reforms [such as Title IX] started the NCAA for women and continues to be an issue," stated Su.
While many incoming female athletes admit to not even realizing the effects of Title IX, as athletics has become a more gender-neutral subject for the current generation, Delventhal does see it important that they are kept aware of the history of the act and the influences it has had on bringing this neutrality about.
"Title IX is not an issue to them, but it is important for them to know about it," stated Delventhal. "Women's teams have brought so much to be proud of to
Delventhal acknowledged the great leaps he has seen in the acceptance of female athletes over the years by society, and entertained the largely female crowd in the Hawkins Hall lecture room with a true-life vignette shared with him by a
The faculty member had taken her sons and his friends to the Cardinal women's hockey games over the year due to the free admission, and when the boy and his friends would play street hockey in the driveway they would often pretend to be many of the female skaters they had been going to see.

"But when I got to be about 16, size became an issue," remembered Khan, "The guys were about 6'0 and I was only 4'11."

While the opportunities for female athletes in hockey and a number of other sports have grown, Khan and Brien pointed out in a slide during their PowerPoint presentation portion of the discussion that fan support is still a factor between men's and women's sports. On the slide, pictures of the
"People have to start realizing that when they go to a women's game, they aren't going to get the same game as a men's," Delventhal said. "Women's hockey is not the same sport as men's, but you definitely have to appreciate it."
Though some disparity is still present, Delventhal was quick to point out that a number of positives have come out of the enacting of Title IX in 1972. "Our women athletes are much more direct and confident than the male athletes, and that confidence factor is one of the great things that intercollegiate sports have brought to the table."
"My wife was a figure skater, a good one at that, and she has commented to me a number of times what she wouldn't give to go back in time and be able play hockey like our women do now," Delventhal commented.

Goguen Tabbed as Assistant Coach
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Former University of New Hampshire defenseman Nicole Goguen has been added to the Plattsburgh State women's hockey staff, according to Cardinals head coach Kevin Houle. Goguen replaces former assistant Erin O'Brien, who joined the Syracuse University coaching staff last month.
"Nicole will bring a great deal of experience and knowledge to the program having played at perennial Division I power UNH," Houle said. "She will continue where Coach O’Brien left off in being a positive role model for our student-athletes."
Goguen helped the UNH Wildcats to a 115-19-13 record for an .826 winning percentage, three NCAA tournament appearances and four consecutive Hockey East championships from 2005-08. She totaled four goals and 21 assists during her 145-game collegiate career, and was selected to the Hockey East All-Academic Team three times.
A 2005 member of the Canada U-22 National Team, Goguen is from Truro, Nova Scotia. She majored in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science.
Accustomed to high-level women's college hockey, Goguen joins a Cardinals program that has dominated Division III the last two seasons with back-to-back national titles, two Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division regular-season crowns, a No. 1 national ranking for all but two weeks and a 52-3-3 record.

Publication Cover Takes First in the Nation in Contest
PHILADELPHIA - The Plattsburgh State 2007-08 men's and women's ice hockey guide covers were judged Best in the Nation by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Sports Information Office of Director Patrick Stewart and Assistant Director Kerry Chapin will be formally recognized during a publications awards ceremony on July 2 at the CoSIDA Workshop Convention in Tampa, Fla. CoSIDA CONTEST RESULTS
The Cardinals' sports information office was the lone representative honored by CoSIDA to receive national certificates in the entire SUNY system, including the State University of New York Athletic Conference membership. The two certificates match the school's best output since last season when the men's soccer and women's hockey guide covers were voted Best in the Nation in Division C, including 400-plus NCAA Division III and junior college institutions.
The cover concept was created by Stewart and Chris Boire of Boire Design perfected the full-color layout. The women's guide, featuring All-Americans Julie Devereux and Danielle Blanchard sandwiching the program's first NCAA championship trophy on a red-bleed cover, was entered in the Single-Sport Category. The cover took first place in Division C while the book itself was 21st despite being combined with Division A-B, which includes NCAA Division I and II programs. Like women's hockey, the men's hockey book--with the leadership group of C.J. Tozzo, Tom Breslin, Joey Wilson, Nick Rolls and T.J. Cooper on the cover--was grouped with larger schools to end up fifth overall but won Division C cover laurels. (Click on cover for online version of women's hockey media guide)
Stewart has garnered 24 CoSIDA certificates for publications and writing excellence, including 13 Best in the Nation plaudits. Chapin earns her third award of her three-year sports information career. Boire also worked on Plattsburgh's Best Cover citations for 2004 Women's Soccer, 2003-04 Men's Hockey, 2006 Men's Soccer and 2006-07 Women's Hockey.
Plattsburgh's other national rankings in the CoSIDA publications contest for this academic year include Men's Soccer book, 16th; Women's Soccer book, 16th; Women's Basketball book, 23rd; and Men's Basketball book, 27th; Cross Country/Track Multi-Sport Guide, 20th; and Women's Volleyball, 32nd.
