Sangiovanni Selected to USILA All-Star Game
PERRY, N.Y. - The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association has named Plattsburgh State attackman Frank Sangiovanni as an alternate to the 67th annual USILA North/South Senior All-Star Game for NCAA Division III. The event will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Harvard Stadium in Boston, Mass. Sangiovanni, who will be on the North squad, is believed to be the first Plattsburgh player ever to be selected to the all-star game.
Sangiovanni (photo by Press-Republican) ranks second in the nation in both goals (62) and goal-scoring average (3.88 per game) as well as T-13th with 4.50 points per game. He earned All-State University of New York Athletic Conference Second Team honors after setting school single-season records for goals and points (72) to go along with a career-high 10 assists. The Huntington High School product also became the Cardinals' all-time record holder with 135 goals and 166 points.
"I am very proud of Frank for this honor. I think it represents the movement of our program in a positive direction," Plattsburgh coach P.J. Kavanagh said. "He has led the SUNYAC for the past two years in goals, so he is deserving of the recognition. He has rewritten the school scoring records, and the only thing that could cap off his career better than participation in this game would be selection as an All-American."

Three All-SUNYAC Selections Most Ever for Cardinals
FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team earned a program-record three spots on the 2008 All-State University of New York Athletic Conference Team. Senior attackman Frank Sangiovanni (Huntington Station/Huntington High School) and junior long-stick midfielder Stephan Marino (Huntington Station/Huntington HS) each made the second team, while junior midfielder Matt Maes (Lindenhurst HS) received honorable mention honors.
Through the SUNYAC tournament, Sangiovanni led the SUNYAC in goals (62), man-up goals (10), shots (144) and placed fourth with a school-record 72 points. Sangiovanni broke his own school single-season record in goals and also has the career mark with 135.
Marino was second on the team with 61 ground balls and played in all 16 games. He controlled the defensive midfield and was tied for fifth in assists with five and also contributed a goal.
Maes collected 15 goals and nine assists for 24 total points. He ranked tied for fourth for the Cardinals in points and was fifth in shots (57) and ground balls (36).

Cardinals Edged By Red Dragons
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Oneonta State snapped the Cardinals four-game win streak this afternoon as the Red Dragons defeated the Cardinals 15-12 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference lacrosse game at the Fieldhouse Lacrosse Complex. Plattsburgh drops to 8-7 overall including 4-2 in SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons improve to 6-7 and 3-3 in conference play.
Luke Weidlein and Matt Maes led the Cardinals in scoring each tallying six points. Weidlein led with four goals and Maes followed with three. Five other Cardinals scored one goal apiece: Tom Cerny, Bryan Copius, Pat Haertel, Frank Sangiovanni and Pat Nastro.
Oneonta scored just 1:26 into the game, but Plattsburgh's Weidlein scored three unanswered goals to put the Cardinals up 3-1. However, the Red Dragons scored the next two goals to even the score at 3-3 entering the second period. Plattsburgh trailed 9-7 midway through the game as Oneonta outscored Plattsburgh 6-4 in the second quarter.
Plattsburgh scored the first four goals of the third period and was able to bridge the gap slightly outscoring the Red Dragons 4-3 in the third. The momentum shifted again, this time in Oneonta's favor, as they scored the last 6 out of 7 goals in the game to edge the Cardinals.
Goalie Matt Billia played the second half making seven saves in the loss. Kyle Reich stopped 21 shots in the victory.
Plattsburgh held advantages in shots (44-39) while going 1-for-1 in man-up situations. Oneonta held a slight 36-34 advantage in ground balls while going 0-for-4 in man up opportunities.

Cardinals Soar Over Golden Eagles
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State jumped out to a quick lead and sustained that momentum to top Brockport 18-12 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at the Fieldhouse Lacrosse Complex. The Cardinals improve to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in SUNYAC while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-6 and 0-5.
Frank Sangiovanni, Luke Weidlein and Pat Haertel all had multiple-goal games for the Cardinals with six, five and two, respectively. Weidlein added four assists and Haertel added one.
Mike Sanderson, Mike Tammaro, and Anthony Ventresca led the Golden Eagles with two goals apiece. Tammaro and Ventresca each tallied two assists.
Plattsburgh jumped to an early 5-0 lead after the first quarter. The Golden Eagles registered their first goal with 11:24 remaining in the second period but the Cardinals scored the next three. At the half, Plattsburgh led 12-4, but the Golden Eagles continued to battle scoring eight of their twelve goals in the second half.
Goalie Billy Hughes played the first half and compiled four saves to earn the victory for the Cardinals. Matt Billia played 28 minutes and made seven saves for Plattsburgh. Garret Allwes stopped 20 shots in taking the loss.
Potsdam held advantages in shots (64-45) and ground balls (39-27) while going 1-for-2 in man-up situations. Brockport held the advantage in face-offs winning 18 of 33.

ECAC also Honors Sangiovanni for Weekly Award
CENTERVILLE, Mass. - After the State University of New York Athletic Conference named Plattsburgh State's Frank Sangiovanni its Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week, the Eastern College Athletic Conference followed suit on Friday and gave the senior attackman top billing for the Upstate region among NCAA Division III programs. The period ended on Sunday.
Sangiovanni (Huntington High School) converted on 15-of-21 shot attempts to lead the Cardinals past SUNYAC foes Morrisville (21-6) and Oswego (18-11) last week. He broke the school records for goals in a game (8) and a season (48), and had 12 points against the Mustangs that was three shy of setting another benchmark.

Maes Lifts Plattsburgh in Double OT Thriller
POTSDAM, N.Y. - Matt Maes scored 53 seconds into the second overtime to give the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team an exciting 12-11 victory Wednesday over host Potsdam State in State University of New York Athletic Conference action, extending the Cardinals win streak to three games. Plattsburgh moved to 7-6 overall, including 3-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears fall to 6-4 and lost for the first time in four conference starts.
Frank Sangiovanni, the reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week, led the Cardinals with three goals, including the game-tying tally with 41 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Luke Weidlein led all scorers with five points on two goals and three assists, and Tom Cerny added two goals and three points.
Plattsburgh trailed 9-5 in the midway through the third quarter before Adrian Marino scored an unassisted goal with 3 minutes and 5 seconds remaining to ignite a four-goal spurt, tying the score at 9-all.
Goalie Matt Billia played the second half and both extra sessions to pick up the victory, making nine saves. Billy Richards, the goalie of the week in the conference, stopped 11 shots in taking the loss.
This marked Plattsburgh's first overtime game in four seasons.
Potsdam held advantages in shots (42-37) and ground balls (38-31) while going 3-for-9 in man-up situations. Plattsburgh was outshot 23-12 in the first half when Potsdam took a 7-5 lead after 30 minutes. But the Cardinals outscored the Bears 4-2 in the fourth quarter, getting off 15 shots and holding the Bears to four.

Sangiovanni Earns SUNYAC Weekly Marks
FREDONIA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State senior attackman Frank Sangiovanni is the State University of New York Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week, for the period that ended Sunday.
The Huntington High School product led the Cardinals to a 2-0 SUNYAC week with 15 goals and 19 points, turning in a record-setting performance. In a 21-6 win over Morrisville, Sangiovanni broke his own team record with nine goals and his 12 points were two shy of the single-game mark in school history. Then he followed up that contest with a six-goal effort in an 18-11 victory against Oswego, becoming the Cardinals' best goal-scorer in a single-season with 49. He also totaled seven ground balls while averaging 7.5 goals and 9.5 points during the week.

Cardinals Top Lakers, Sangiovanni Sets Record
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team defeated conference opponent Oswego State, 18-11, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference match up Saturday afternoon at the Fieldhouse Lacrosse Complex.
Cardinal attackman Frank Sangiovanni scored six goals, giving him 49 on the season, a mark that breaks his own school single-season record of 48 tallies from last year. Luke Weidlein had five goals and two assists to lead all Cardinals in scoring. Goalie Billy Hughes played the entire first half in net, making five saves while allowing six goals to earn the victory.
The Lakers (2-8, 1-2 SUNYAC) were led by Mike Brewster's three goals and four assists. Netminder Judd Robinson played the entire game for Oswego stopping 19 shots.
Oswego collected a 2-1 lead early in the first quarter, but Plattsburgh went on a 6-1 scoring run taking a 7-3 lead, which they would never relinquish. The Cardinals (6-6, 2-1) perseverance was especially evident three times throughout the game when Plattsburgh countered a Lakers goal within nine seconds of their opponent's scoring.
Matt Billia played all but 37 seconds of the second half only allowing five goals and making eight saves, including six big stops in the fourth quarter. Ryan Price won 21 of 32 face-offs and Bryan Copius led the Cards with 10 ground balls. Copius and Matt Maes also scored two goals each; Tom Cerny had a goal and three assists.
The Cardinals return to the Fieldhouse Lacrosse Complex on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. against Brockport.

Cardinals, Sangiovanni Roll after Slow Start
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - After a slow start, Plattsburgh State pounded Morrisville State College 21-6 in the Cardinals men's lacrosse home opener in State University of New York Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon at the Fieldhouse Lacrosse Complex. Plattsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak--the longest in the PJ Kavanagh coaching era--to improve to 5-6 overall and even its SUNYAC record at 1-1. The Mustangs fall to 0-6 and 0-2 in the conference.
Senior attackman Frank Sangiovanni scored nine goals to break his own school record for a single game, which he set with eight against Castleton State back on March 13. He added three assists for 12 points, which is two shy of the school benchmark. Tom Cerny tied Matt Virga's school record for seven assists, and he scored twice.
Morrisville took a 3-0 lead 3 minutes and 37 seconds into the game on goals by Will Bowers, Eric Stein and Andrew Elsmore. Stein also assisted on the game's opening tally by Bowers.
But Bryan Copius ignited a Plattsburgh rally with his only goal of the contest with 9:12 left in the first quarter, setting off a streak in which the Cardinals outscored Morrisville 19-1 over the next 41:07.
Starting goalie Billy Hughes made six saves--all in the first half--for his third win in five decisions. Jeremy Hunt stopped 20 shots for the Mustangs.
Plattsburgh also dominated in shots (57-33), ground balls (64-40) and face-offs (26-5). The team went 4-for-6 in man-up situations and killed off seven opportunities for the Mustangs.

Second Quarter Dooms Cardinals at Top 5 Cortland
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Tom Spencer and Adrian Marino each scored two goals, and Bryan Copius gave Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead, but the visiting Cardinals lost a 21-7 decision Saturday at the hands of No. 5-ranked Cortland State in the State University of New York Athletic Conference opener for both men's lacrosse teams. Plattsburgh falls to 4-6 overall while the Red Dragons are now 7-1.
The Cardinals trailed only 4-1 after the first quarter, but couldn't overcome a nine-goal onslaught by Cortland in the second to put the game out of reach. The Red Dragons took a 13-3 halftime lead after answering Copius' game-opening goal by scoring five straight times.
Billy Hughes and Matt Billia combined for 19 saves in the Plattsburgh goal.
In addition to the scoreboard, Cortland also dominated in shots (64-19), ground balls (54-29), face-offs (22-10) and clears (18-of-20 to 18-29). Both teams went 2-for-3 in man-up situations.
Reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week Billy Fuchs led Cortland with five points, including four goals. Josh Cittadino also had five points with three goals and two assists.

Clarkson Downs Cardinals in Final SUNYAC Tune-up
CANTON, N.Y. - Frank Sangiovanni and Luke Weidlein both had three points in Plattsburgh State's 14-8 loss Wednesday to Clarkson University in a men's lacrosse game played on the SUNY-Canton campus. The Cardinals completed their non-conference schedule with a 4-5 record, and will have their State University of New York Athletic Conference opener on Saturday at Top 5 Cortland State. The Golden Knights up their mark to 4-2.
Sangiovanni and Weidlein paced Plattsburgh with two goals and an assist apiece, and Dan Defrancesco scored his first career goal. Ryan Price helped the Cardinals dominate the face-off X, earning 16 of the 17 face-off wins to nine for Clarkson. Billy Hughes made 11 saves.
Defrancesco and Tom Cerny gave Plattsburgh a 2-0 lead in the first quarter before Clarkson reeled off five straight goals en route to a 9-5 halftime advantage.
Clarkson had a 41-40 edge in shots, but Plattsburgh led in ground balls, 36-32.
Tom Ross and Jon Cathcart combined for six goals and two assists for Clarkson.

Cardinals Give Saints All They Can Handle
CANTON, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State jumped out to a quick lead but couldn't sustain that momentum in the second half in a 20-7 non-conference loss at No. 15-ranked Saint Lawrence in a men's lacrosse game that was closer than the final margin indicated. The Cardinals fall to 4-4 while the Saints improve to 3-2.
Bryan Copius and Tom Cerny each had multiple-goal games for the Cardinals with three and two, respectively. Luke Weidlein added two assists.
Alex Slauson led the Saints with four goals, and Kevin Russell chipped in five assists as part of a six-point night.
Plattsburgh led 5-2 on just seven shots after the first quarter before the Saints responded with five unanswered goals in the second to take a 7-5 halftime lead. In the second half, SLU wore Plattsburgh down and outscored the visitors 13-2, including 8-0 in the final stanza.

Sangiovanni Named SUNYAC Player of the Week
FREDONIA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse player Frank Sangiovanni has been named the player of the week in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, for the period ending Sunday.
Sangiovanni, a senior attackman (Huntington Station/Huntington High School) became the Cardinals' all-time record holder for goals (103) and points scored (127) with an 11-goal, 12-point road trip in which Plattsburgh went 1-2, facing Eastern Connecticut State, Fontbonne, and Montclair State. He currently leads the SUNYAC with 30 goals and 33 points, and is on pace to break both of his school's single-season marks.

Cardinals Get Late Goals to Win at Western Conn.
DANBURY, Conn. - Bryan Copius scored the tying goal and Luke Weidlein netted the game-winner with 14 seconds remaining to lift Plattsburgh State to a come-from-behind 14-13 victory Sunday over host Western Connecticut in non-conference men's lacrosse action WestConn Athletic Complex. The Cardinals won their third straight game to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Leading the attack for Plattsburgh State were Weidlein with three goals, and Copius, Matt Maes, Pat Nastro, Frank Sangiovanni and Jimmy Tenny all with two apiece.
Billy Hughes and Matt Billia platooned in goal for the Cardinals, combining for 31 saves.
Adam Lanehart led WestConn with four goals and Andrew Barbieri had three. Dennis Skarda added three points on a goal and two assists.
The Colonials (3-2), who trailed 5-1 midway through the second period, fought back in the third and fourth periods and took the lead, 13-12, on a spectacular unassisted goal by senior Dennis Skarda with 44 seconds remaining on the clock.
Ryan Price then won two consecutive face-offs setting up the game-winning heroics for the Cardinals.
The fourth period, which began deadlocked at 10, featured three ties and three lead changes before the Cardinals took the dramatic victory by a one-goal margin.

Sangiovanni Nets School Record as Cards Cruise
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team beat Castleton State, 24-2, in its 2008 home opener at the Fieldhouse Complex on Thursday afternoon. The 24 goals is the highest total the Cardinals have ever scored in a home opener.
The Cardinals improved to 2-1 on the season, and will now play their next seven games away from their home field. Castleton State drops to 0-2 and trails the all-time series with Plattsburgh, 5-1.
Senior Frank Sangiovanni set the school-record with eight goals in the game, breaking the previous mark of seven held by Matt Virga against CCNY on March 15, 2000; Sangiovanni now has 15 scores on the season. Luke Weidlein added three goals and five assists for eight points. Junior Tom Cerny had two goals and four assists for six points.
The Cardinals shut out the Spartans for the first 51 minutes and 58 seconds of the contest, giving playing time to Billy Hughes, Matt Billia and Logan Carpenter in net. The trio combined for 15 saves in the win. Michael Martinez netted both goals for Castleton State while Phil Barry assisted on both scores.
Sophomore Ryan Price won 13 of 17 face-offs and Cardinals teammate Mike Keenan earned seven of nine. Price also led all players with eight ground balls.

Cerny Nets Career-High Six Points in Season-Opening Win
UTICA, N.Y. - Tom Cerny registered a career-high six points on three goals and three assists, and Frank Sangiovanni also recorded a hat-trick, to power visiting Plattsburgh State to an 11-10 victory Saturday over Utica College at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Cardinals improve to 1-1 on the season while the Pioneers drop to 0-3.
Tanner Stewart led Utica with five goals, followed by Dave Misiaszek with three. Michael Bulger added four assists and finished with five points.
After falling behind 3-0 with 4 minutes and 52 seconds left in the first quarter, Plattsburgh stormed back to score three times over a 1:56 span to close within 4-3 at the end of 15 minutes of play.
Plattsburgh trailed again by three goals at 9-6 with 9:15 left in the third, but Sangiovanni scored a man-up goal 32 seconds later to ignite a Cardinals run that included three unanswered goals to tie the game. After Stewart gave the Pioneers a 10-9 fourth-quarter lead, Pat Nastro got the equalizer and Cerny completed the comeback with the game-winner at the 8:46 mark as Luke Weidlein assisted on the play.
Sophomore Ryan Price had his best game as the Cardinals' primary face-off man, winning 19 of 25 draws.
Billy Hughes and Matt Billia combined for 17 saves in the Plattsburgh goal, and Travis Wright had 19 for Utica.
Both teams got off 41 shots, but Plattsburgh had a 41-33 advantage in ground balls.

Plattsburgh Loses Battle of Cardinals
PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Visiting Plattsburgh State lost its men's lacrosse season opener Thursday on the road to Saint John Fisher, 9-8, in a battle of Cardinals at Growney Stadium. The host Cardinals improved to 3-0 for the first time in SJFC history.
Frank Sangiovanni led Plattsburgh with four goals, while Tom Spencer had a pair. Tom Cerny chipped in two assists.
Chris Schmidt and Mike Cummins each scored twice and had an assist to pace SJFC.
Plattsburgh's Billy Hughes made 13 saves, and Jon Cortina (6) and Dan Serafine (5) each played a half in the SJFC goal.
Plattsburgh outshot SJFC 10-9 in the first quarter, but trailed 5-2 on the scoreboard after 15 minutes of play. SJFC never trailed in the game but had two get two fourth-quarter goals to seal the victory after Sangiovanni tied it at 7-7.
The teams had 37 ground balls apiece.

Former Coach Named to MLL Post
CHICAGO - Former Plattsburgh State head coach John Combs has been named to a similar position with the Chicago Machine of Major League Lacrosse. Last season, Combs served as an assistant coach with the professional outdoor franchise.
Combs led the Cardinals from 2000-03, producing six all-State University of New York Athletic Conference selections and earning a school-record 25 victories in four years. He led the program to its first winning season when the 2000 squad went 7-5 in his first year.
Current Plattsburgh assistant coach Kenny Pierson '05 played his first two seasons under Combs as part of a four-year collegiate career in which he compiled 36 goals and 30 assists for the Cardinals.

Sangiovanni Featured by Hometown Prep School
HUNTINGTON, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State attackman Frank Sangiovanni recently was featured on the Huntington Union Free School District website. Sangiovanni is a 2004 graduate of Huntington High School. Sangiovanni as a junior led the State University of New York Athletic Conference with 3.20 goals per game, ranked 10th in the nation in goal scoring and scored a school-record 48 goals last season. He ended up third in SUNYAC scoring with a 3.80 points average.

Alum Coaches Prep Team to Missouri State Crown
SAINT LOUIS - Eddie Condon, a 1984 Plattsburgh State graduate, coached Christian Brothers College High School to the Missouri boys' state lacrosse championship this spring, defeating Rockhurst 9-8 for its first prep title. Click on the link to read the full story .
Condon was a two-year captain for the Plattsburgh lacrosse club team in the early 1980s, a grassroots program before the Cardinals were elevated to varsity status for the inaugural 1999 season.
