Several School Records as Preseason No. 3

STARKVILLE, Miss. -  The Plattsburgh State softball team, with 170 points, will begin the season at No. 3 in NCAA Division III in the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association preseason rankings, which were released this week.  The program set a number of milestones in the process, including highest preseason ranking (No. 10 in 2007), highest ranking ever (No. 4 in last year's final poll) and poll points (167 on June 11, 2007).  NFCA Top 25 Poll

"This is a nice honor for the program and it shows respect that we've received from coaches across the nation about the success we've achieved in the last few years," said coach Sean Cotter, who enters his ninth season at the helm of the Cardinals.  "But it'll mean nothing if we don't attain our immediate goal of winning a SUNYAC championship in 2008.  We're looking forward to improving each day, and we know that we cannot rest on our past success."

Plattsburgh returns six starters and top two pitchers among 12 players off last season's 37-14 squad that advanced to the National Quarterfinals in only its second NCAA Tournament appearance.

Defending national champion Linfield is ranked No. 1 in the poll, receiving all eight first-place votes and 200 points.  Besides Plattsburgh, Buffalo State at No. 19 is the only other State University of New York Athletic Conference institution represented in the preseason national rankings.  SUNYAC member Cortland State was in the "others receiving votes" category with 10 points.

The defending NCAA Northeast Regional champion Cardinals will face a challenging schedule that includes four schools ranked in the Preseason Top 25, including No. 4 St. Thomas (Mar. 16), No. 7 Redlands (Mar. 20 DH), No. 19 Buffalo State (Apr. 19 DH) and No. 21 Central (Mar. 21).

Plattsburgh opens the season Feb. 29-Mar. 1 at the LeTourneau Tournament in Longview, Texas.

"Our teams at Plattsburgh always have a few things in common. They all have a real determination to be the best, and are always real close knit groups. They have the desire to be the best both on and off the field and that always leads to good team dynamics. Part of that determination and closeness comes from our annual spring trip to California and our many off the field community service activities. We have high expectations for our student-athletes and in return they receive the opportunity to play softball at a highly competitive level, at one of the top facilities in the Northeast, within a highly supportive community." The team has improved each year, with season win totals of 9, 15, 21, and 31 in the first four seasons. Already in that short period of time, the Cardinals have appeared twice in the SUNYAC playoffs and earned a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC ) tournament.

The commitment to excellence is evident in all facets of Cardinal softball, from the pre-season preparation, to their involvement in community service projects, to the all-new Cardinal Softball Field, one of the top softball facilities in the Northeastern United States. Each spring, the Cardinals begin their season with a trip to California, to participate in the highly regarded SunWest Tournament. The team competes in one of the top athletic conferences in the nation, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC ), and the conference champion gains automatic entry into the NCAA Championship Tournament.
