Three Qualify For Tennis SUNYAC Semifinals

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After a disappointing start to the State University of New York Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament in which all three Plattsburgh State doubles teams were eliminated on Friday, the Cardinals redeemed themselves when three singles competitors qualified for the semifinals of the competition.

Rachel Hodnett started Saturday off with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brockport's Katelyn Richenberg at No. 1 singles. Victoria Germano then won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, knocking another Golden Eagle, Katylin Broderick, out of the tournament.

Also victorious in the quarterfinals for the Cardinals was Jessica Paquette at No. 5 singles. Paquette topped Cortland's Alana Sullivan 7-5, 6-3 to qualify for the semifinals.

Geneseo Blue Knights ended up disqualifying all three competitors in the following round, but the women's efforts were good enough to post the best showing at the SUNYAC Tournament for Plattsburgh since 2007.

In the semifinals, Hodnett fell 1-6, 1-6 to first-seed Monica Vieth; Germano lost 0-6, 2-6 to top-seed Julia Passik; and second seed Katie Gayvert beat Paquette 3-6, 3-6.

Women's Tennis Match Cancelled

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's tennis match against Cortland, originally scheduled for October 3 but cancelled due to weather conditions, will not be rescheduled. Instead, the Cardinals will close out their season at the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by the Eastside Raquet Club in Syracuse, this Friday through Sunday, October 9-11 as listed.

"We were working on a plan to play before the SUNYAC's, but due to late indoor court availability and this being a mid-term week, scheduling was an issue for both teams. So, [Cortland head coach] Tom Spanbauer and I decided it was in the best interest of the players to cancel the match," elaborated Plattsburgh head coach Mark Stata.
