Cardinal Alum John Daly Headed to the Olympics

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - John Daly, a former track & field standout at Plattsburgh State, will be traveling to Vancouver next month as a member of the 2010 United States Winter Olympic team. Daly won back-to-back gold medals in the skeleton at the Calgary, Canada Intercontinental Cup races on January 15, which helped him secure his spot on the Olympic team [full Calgary story].

According to the U.S. Bobsled & Skeleton Federation (USBSF) website:

"Daly has had a rollercoaster season.  He finished team trials in October as the top ranked U.S. men’s skeleton athlete to earn his first bid for the World Cup team.  The 24-year-old competed in four World Cup events, but couldn’t muster a result higher than 11th.  Outranked by Matt Antoine , who slid the first half of the season on the Intercontinental Cup circuit, Daly was replaced on the World Cup team.

Just when it felt like his opportunity had slipped away, Daly returned to Lake Placid, N.Y. before the holiday break to compete in the America’s Cup race.  The Long Island native obliterated the track record on his way to winning his first race of the season.  Then he won gold again in the Lake Placid Intercontinental Cup.  And again back-to-back in Calgary." [full Olympic team story]

As a track athlete at Plattsburgh, Daly set the outdoor track school records for the decathlon (6786 points) and the long jump (7.02 meters) while earning All-American honors in the decathlon at the 2007 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was also named a United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-American for his efforts.

Daly had also qualified for the outdoor national meet in the decathlon in 2006, but was unable to finish due to injury. He finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.63) at the State University of New York Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships that same year.

Daly graduated from Plattsburgh in 2007 with a degree in public relation and advertising. He began competing in the skeleton in 2001. His full bio on the USBSF website available by clicking on the following link.

Coach's Corner

The Plattsburgh State coaching staff creates a family atmosphere for the track and field student-athlete. The environment that we create as coaches (which includes a diverse group of individuals) allows for a learning experience to happen inside and outside the classroom.

While enduring three seasons which span the entire school year it is important to establish a discipline with the student-athletes. This discipline becomes reflective in their overall academic and competitive outcomes. We expect high standards to be met by the student-athletes. These standards are based on consistent evaluation on the track, field, and in the classroom. Within this framework we also promote the overall enjoyment of the collegiate athletics experience.
