Volleyball Closes Out Season at Colby-Sawyer College
NEW LONDON, N.H. - Plattsburgh State concluded the 2008 volleyball season on Saturday at Colby-Sawyer College, where the Cardinals lost to Bates 25-19, 25-22, 25-27, 25-13 and the host Chargers 25-12, 25-19, 25-18. The Cardinals end up with a 7-28 record.
Keiko Watanabe led Plattsburgh with eight kills and five blocks against Bates. Kaitlyn Bakker added seven kills, and setter Susan Bodkin had two kills, 18 assists, nine digs and four blocks. In addition, Sara Koller posted 17 digs and Andrea Kalter had 11.
Bakker notched six kills versus Colby-Sawyer, and Chelsea Varin had 10 digs.

Plattsburgh Honors Seniors in Home Finale
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Visiting Clarkson University handed a 26-24, 25-14, 25-16 loss on Plattsburgh State in non-conference volleyball action on Wednesday evening, spoiling Senior Night for the Cardinals' Dana Bertrand and Keiko Watanabe. Plattsburgh falls to 7-26 overall after playing its last home match of the season, which wraps up this weekend at Colby-Sawyer College.
In their final home appearance, Watanabe led the Cardinals with nine kills and Bertrand posted five digs.
Setter Susan Bodkin had an all-around match for Plattsburgh with six kills, 16 assists and 11 digs. Sara Koller paced the Cardinals defensively with 16 digs.

Cardinals Downed at D-II St. Michael's
COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team lost on the road to Saint Michael's in four sets, 25-20, 25-10, 25-27, 25-12, in non-conference action Tuesday evening at the Ross Sports Center. The Cardinals are now 7-21 on the year, while the NCAA Division II scholarship Purple Knights (10-8) have reached double-digit wins for just the third time in the last 13 seasons.
Freshman Kaitlyn Bakker led the Cardinals with nine kills, followed by Ciera Jacobs with seven. Senior Dana Bertrand tallied 10 digs. Junior Susan Bodkin and freshman Andrea Kalter had 13 and 10 assists, respectively.
Saint Michael's outhit Plattsburgh .270 to .070 and forced the Cardinals into 18 serve-receive errors.
For the Purple Knights, senior Audrey Rose Hagert had a match-high 14 kills while senior Justine Fletcher and sophomore Lindsey Frazier each added 12. Senior Amy Manougian had a match-high 41 assists along with 10 digs while Stephanie Smetana had a match-best 15 digs.

Cardinals Split Two Matches to Conclude FDU Tourney
MADISON, N.J. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team wrapped up the Farleigh Dickinson-Florham Devils Classic on Saturday by going 1-1 for the second straight day. The Cardinals now stand at 7-20 overall.
In a thrilling five-set win against Bible Baptist, 25-9, 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 15-13, Plattsburgh was led by Andrea Kalter's career-high 24 assists and 12 digs. Kaitlyn Bakker and Keiko Watanabe paced the offense with eight kills apiece, and Kristin Saheim added seven.
Plattsburgh also had the benefit of a season-best 16 service aces, including four from Dana Bertrand.

Cardinals Split on Opening Day at FDU Tourney
MADISON, N.J. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team opened the FDU-Florham Devils Classic Friday with a victory over Wesley, 25-17, 25-21, 25-13, before losing to host Farleigh Dickinson-Florham in three sets, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20. The Cardinals improve to 6-19 on the year.
Against Wesley, Kristin Saheim had seven service aces and five digs and Keiko Watanabe added eight kills. Setter Susan Bodkin chipped in 11 assists and three blocks.
Watanabe also led the way offensively versus FDU-Florham, spiking 10 kills. Andrea Kalter recorded nine assists, three aces and nine digs, and Bodkin posted 13 assists and six digs. Chelsea Varin and Sara Koller had 11 and eight digs, respectively.
"I thought we played well. The girls' hard work in practice this week showed tonight on the court," Plattsburgh coach Dena O'Connell said after the matches. "I'm very proud of them and look forward to this effort carrying over tomorrow."

Cardinals Drop Pair at Oneonta Invitational
ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team lost its first two matches Friday at the Oneonta State Invitational, falling in a tough five-set match against sister State University of New York Athletic Conference school Geneseo 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-7 and getting swept by Russell Sage 25-20, 25-15, 25-14. The Cardinals dip to 5-16 on the year.
Against the Blue Knights, which was a non-conference meeting, the Cardinals' setters paved the way. Susan Bodkin had 19 assists, five digs and seven kills while Andrea Kalter recorded 10 assists, nine digs and three kills. Cassie DeLeo and Kristin Saheim chipped in 10 and nine kills, respectively. Saheim also had four blocks.
Bodkin also notched four kills, four digs and four assists versus Russell Sage. Hilary Boyea, another setter, made six assists and five digs.
Sara Koller added a team-best 15 digs in both matches.

Cardinals Downed by Host Saints
CANTON, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team was swept by host Saint Lawrence in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at the Burkman Gymnasium, 25-13, 25-12 and 25-14. The Cardinals fall to 5-14 on the year while the Saints improve to 13-5.
Plattsburgh's Keiko Watanabe led the team with seven kills and Andrea Kalter had five. Watanabe also had three solo blocks.
Susan Bodkin finished with 12 assists to help direct the offense.
Defensively, Dana Bertrand led the Cardinals with 17 digs, while freshmen Chelsea Varin and Kalter had nine and eight, respectively.

Cardinals Complete SUNYAC Pool Play at Potsdam
POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions Saturday to New Paltz, 25-16, 25-13, 25-17, and Potsdam, 25-19, 25-23, 25-12, in State University of New York Athletic Conference East Division action held at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Hall.
Against the Hawks, Kaitlyn Bakker led Plattsburgh with seven kills. Dana Bertrand chipped in 10 digs.
Keiko Watanabe spiked six kills and recorded four blocks against the host Bears. Setter Susan Bodkin added 17 assists, seven digs and four blocks.
The Cardinals fall to 5-13 overall, including 0-4 in the SUNYAC.

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team was swept on Friday's opening day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference East Division pool play by Oneonta, 25-12, 25-23, 25-22, and Cortland, 25-16, 25-23, 25-8, at Maxcy Hall on the SUNY Potsdam campus. The Cardinals fall to 5-11 overall, including 0-2 in the conference.
Keiko Watanbe and Kristin Saheim led Plattsburgh with eight and five kills, respectively, against Cortland. Saheim added three blocks and Susan Bodkin contributed 15 assists and six digs.
That duo also supported the Cardinals attack with four kills apiece versus Oneonta.
Plattsburgh was hurt by committing more hitting errors (13) than kills (12) on offense, and eight service errors and 14 passing errors with the serve-receive game.

Cardinals Wrap Up Potsdam Tourney with Pair of Wins
CANTON, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team won its last two matches at the SUNY Potsdam Victory Promotions Invitational, which concluded on Saturday. The Cardinals beat Regis (Mass.) 25-22, 25-22, 8-25, 25-23 and Word of Life 25-11, 25-16, 25-18 for their first back-to-back victories and to improve to 3-6 overall.
Against Regis, Kaitlyn Bakker spiked 12 kills and Cassie DeLeo added nine. The Plattsburgh defense shined as Dana Bertrand had 39 digs, Sara Koller with 35 and Andrea Kalter, 33.
The Cardinals used 18 service aces to sweep Word of Life, and Kalter had a team-best 15 digs.
On Friday, Plattsburgh lost a pair of 3-1 decisions to Saint Lawrence, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-10, and Rochester, 25-17, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21, in Potsdam.
Bakker and Keiko Watanabe had eight kills apiece against the Saints. Susan Bodkin added 27 assists and 13 digs while Koller had a career-high 46 digs.
Bakker notched six kills against the Yellowjackets.

Division II St. Michael's Downs Cardinals
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Visiting Saint Michael's swept the Plattsburgh State volleyball team 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday at Memorial Hall. The Purple Knights--who were making their season opener tonight--are an NCAA Division II program affiliated with the Northeast-10 Conference that offers athletic scholarships. The Cardinals dip to 1-4 after their home opener.
Kristin Saheim and Cassie DeLeo each had four kills for the Cardinals, as the offense struggled to a .033 attack percentage. Dana Bertrand added 12 digs.
Lindsey Frazier paced the Purple Knights with nine kills and the offense hit with .191 attack efficiency. Stephanie Smetana led all players with 13 digs.

Tomorrow's Home Opener Moved Back One Hour
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball home opener for Tuesday vs. Saint Michael's has been moved from 6 p.m. to a 7 p.m. start time. That announcement was made by Plattsburgh head coach Dena O'Connell. The Cardinals are making their Memorial Hall debut this season after beginning the schedule last weekend at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic, where they went 1-3.

Bodkin Makes All-Tournament; Cards Split on Saturday
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team wrapped up the final day of the Red Dragon Classic by splitting two matches on Saturday at Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium on the campus of SUNY Cortland. The Cardinals (1-3) fell to Buffalo State 25-19, 25-21, 25-14, but bounced back to down SUNY-Old Westbury 25-10, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16. Junior setter Susan Bodkin represented Plattsburgh on the all-tournament team.
Bodkin recorded 12 assists, four service aces and five digs against the Bengals.
Sara Koller notched a career-high 23 digs and Dana Bertrand added 17 to help the Cardinals pick up their first win of the season over SUNY-OW in four sets. Keiko Watanabe led the offense with nine kills and Kristin Saheim had eight.
New Paltz swept the host Red Dragons in three sets, 26-24,25-23, 30-28, for its first Classic title.

Cardinals Grounded in Cortland
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State volleyball team opened the season with a pair of 3-0 losses Friday at the Red Dragon Classic hosted by Cortland State. Montclair State won the first match 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 and then sister State State University of New York Athletic Conference school Fredonia handed the Cardinals (0-2) a 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 loss. Plattsburgh will play SUNYAC foe Buffalo State and then an opponent to be determined to wrap up the tournament on Saturday.
Ciera Jacobs had five kills in her Plattsburgh debut against the Red Hawks, and Kristin Saheim and Keiko Watanabe added five apiece to tie Jacobs for team-high honors in that category. Setter Susan Bodkin had 18 assists, and Sara Koller pitched in nine digs.
The Cardinals suffered 19 hitting errors as part of a .061 attack percentage.
In the second match versus the Blue Devils, Bodkin had 14 assists, three service aces and seven digs. Koller chipped in 16 digs and four aces.
As a team, Plattsburgh had a season-best 10 aces but the offense hit just .063.

Dubay Tabbed for Assistant Coaching Post
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Katelyn Dubay has been named a volleyball assistant coach at Plattsburgh State, according to Cardinals head coach Dena O'Connell.
"I am thrilled that Katelyn is going to be part of the Plattsburgh State women's volleyball program," O'Connell said. "She not only has coaching experience but knows what Division III volleyball is all about because she has played at this level. I am excited to start the season with Katelyn on board."
Dubay is a 2005 graduate of fellow State University of New York Athletic Conference member Oneonta State, where she was a three-year member of the Red Dragons' volleyball team. She totaled 106 kills, 56 service aces and 343 digs in 216 career games. As a senior, she served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was named Academic All-SUNYAC and was the Red Dragon's team captain. She earned a bachelor of science degree in communication studies with a public relations emphasis.
Dubay attended Peru Central High School, helping the volleyball team to Champlain Valley Athletic Conference and Section VII titles from 2001-02.
Her previous volleyball coaching experience includes junior varsity coach and modified grades 7-9, both in the Peru School District. She also has worked as marketing coordinator for Plattsburgh-based Schluter Systems L.P., which manufactures installation systems for tile and stone.

Rewriting the Record Books
The volleyball team has experienced a steady rise into recognition as a top conference and regional team, consistently winning tournaments and reaching post-season play. The Cardinals play in the newly renovated Memorial Hall, complete with a new lighting and sound system for a great collegiate volleyball atmosphere. The team competes in one of the top athletic conferences in the nation, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC ), and the conference champion gains automatic entry into the NCAA Championship Tournament.
