Saranac Students Get 'Trained'
Plattsburgh, N.Y. - Thirteen Saranac High School upperclassmen visited the Plattsburgh State Athletic Training Facilities at the Plattsburgh Field House Complex on Monday to learn more about what exactly the athletic trainers do on a daily basis to help keep Cardinal athletes on top of their game.
"It is the fourth-straight year we have held this and it gives Saranac students, who do not have their own athletic trainer on hand, a chance to really open their eyes and see a different venture for college," Jason Pachter, head athletic trainer at Plattsburgh, commented. "One year we even got an intern out of this visit."
For the students, accompanied by their teacher Krista Brown, the fieldtrip to Plattsburgh is an elective course that they receive credit for, and "It draws in a lot of athletes and is nice fieldtrip for them," Brown stated.
Pachter, along with assistant trainers Cassie Franklin and Takashi Moribe and student trainer Doug MacAlpine, not only showed the students the various techniques and eq
uipment they use, but gave the students hands-on experience with it all as well.
Franklin oversaw the students as they practiced taping the ankles and fingers of their classmates, and Pachter let them try out the STEM and laser restorative machines while explaining the benefits each brings to the healing process.
Moribe led perhaps the most active of the stations, having the students try out rehabilitation techniques for ankles, abs, backs, and shoulders with the aid of various equipment. Even Brown got in on the action by trying to maintain balance while kneeling on an exercise ball, which is a good way to help strengthen core muscles.
"This gives us a chance to educate people around the area about what athletic training is really about," Pachter said. "There is somewhat of a lack of knowledge in the general public as to what exactly we really do."
