Education Collection Policies

Clientele:

The Education collection serves the undergraduate curricular needs and Masters/CAS graduate curricular and research needs including the theory and practice of teaching Pre-K through secondary levels, special and gifted education, reading, and, at the graduate level, educational administration and school counseling.  In the past 5 years, there has been a 76% increase in the number of Special Education majors, with a 162% increase (from 5-18) in the number of graduate students in special education. There are between 30 and 40 faculty members directly involved in teaching education.  The following areas are also related to the collection: developmental (child and adolescent) psychology, area/country studies for global education, urban and rural sociology, and children's literature (including fairy tales and folk tales).

Existing Collections:

Plattsburgh's Education collection includes English language materials of various ages. Materials written for undergraduates, graduate students and for children are part of the collection. Chronologically, works cover the history of education in the U.S. from colonial times to the present, and contemporary theory and practice. The major geographical focus is on U.S.-related materials, with a minor global focus.  The collection is solid in U.S. educational history, and includes the complete collection of ERIC documents, the ERIC and Psychlit databases, and the Department of Education materials in the government documents collection.

Current Collecting:

We currently collect materials in the above categories, with ongoing efforts in strengthen the children's literature collection. Efforts are made to balance to practical and theoretical materials for teachers. NCATE accreditation is scheduled for 2003, which will require a close scrutiny of the collection and is expected to require the purchase of additional materials. There is the possibility of a doctoral program as well.
