Library Science Collections Policies
Clientele:
The Library Science collection serves the needs of the teaching faculty in the Library and Information Services Division. About 15 faculty in the division are actively involved in teaching. The library collects material in this field in order to help staff keep current with changes and developments in this dynamic discipline. Although there is heavy reliance on periodical literature for this purpose, the book collection also plays an important role in supporting the professional development and activities of the library's staff. A related subject area is Education.
Existing Collections:
The collection includes mainly current, graduate level, English language materials. The geographical focus is on U.S. materials, with a minor global focus. The collection is strong in materials on library instruction, reference, and collection development, and is becoming strong in internet-related materials.
Current Collecting:
The collection is not intended to be comprehensive enough to support a curriculum, but rather is intended to focus on support for ongoing and developing programs at this institution. We rely on recommendations from staff to meet the objective of providing intellectual stimulation and growth for the staff. There is an emphasis on practical materials for professional development and instructional purposes. A standing order for SPEC kits published by ACRL provides for coverage in many areas, including some in which the library might not otherwise purchase. Growth areas for the collection are 1) internet-related, web-based information technologies and services, and 2) distance learning librarianship.
