Philosophy Collections Policies
Clientele:
The Philosophy collection serves primarily the needs of lower division undergraduates, because the department is primarily a support department with a very small number of majors. The number of majors has increased in the last five years, however. The collection also supports instructional needs of teaching faculty. There are about 5 faculty members directly involved in teaching philosophy.
The following areas are also related to the collection:
- Political Science,
- Law,
- History of Science,
- History.
Existing Collections:
Plattsburgh's Philosophy collection contains mainly English language materials, with both current and older publication dates. The collection has a global focus, with a minor focus on the U.S. Religion has not been emphasized in the collection, except for occasional purchases of materials providing overviews of various religions.
Current Collecting:
We collect materials as we have in the past, with emphasis on materials that are accessible to lower division undergraduates. Some growth areas for the collection are environmental philosophy; ethics (with the arrival of the new Center for Ethics in Public Affairs), and interdisciplinary areas such as business ethics.
