Women's Studies Collections Policies

Clientele:

The Women's Studies collection serves the instructional needs of faculty, the needs of minors in the department, and Individualized Studies majors (currently 15 majors), and community users. There are twenty-five active Associates directly involved in teaching Women's Studies courses.  Faculty interest seems to be broadening in this area. The following areas are also related to the collection: English, Canadian Studies, Sociology, Education, Anthropology and Political Science.

Existing Collections:

Plattsburgh's Women's Studies collection contains both current and older materials in English. The collection's geographical focus is global, and its chronological focus includes all eras. While we have most of the "classics," the collection has suffered from the burgeoning number of scholars and titles in this inter/multi-disciplinary field.

Current Collecting:

We continue to collect as above, buying mostly secondary sources. A need for primary sources, such as significant papers on archive in microform (Schelessinger, National Women's Party, Anti-Suffrage...) has been suggested. Growth areas include global feminism and broader gender issues across cultures. We are working toward more content on women of color and the economics and educational aspects from feminist perspectives. There is also a growing interest on women in Political Science. Publishing activity in women's studies area appears to have stabilized.

Subjects Covered:

Publisher Information:

Noted publishers include all academic presses and a number of trade titles.

Formats:

Materials in all formats are collected. Paper is preferred over cloth.

Notes:

CCD funds are crucial to continued growth of the collection for special items. A good deal of "feminist" scholarship now comes through departments.  Because of the active nature of women's studies, there are many areas affected, increasingly in higher education and management.
