01:19pm EST, 7 Dec 2012
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Dec. 6. 2012) — SUNY Plattsburgh is one of 14 colleges and universities nationwide to have been selected as part of the 2013 International Academic Partnership Program, which focuses on building academic links in Brazil.
Along with partner institutions, SUNY Plattsburgh will participate in a year-long series of training activities that will help it implement and sustain partnerships with higher education institutions in Brazil, culminating with a study tour of Brazil in the spring of 2013 to meet with potential partner campuses.
In a letter to SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling, Allan Goodman, president and CEO of Institute of International Education, said, “This year’s review panel was truly impressed with your campus’ commitment to international education and interest in developing sustainable international partnerships. Your institution’s application stood out for its demonstrated support from individuals across the institution, campus-wide commitment to increasing internationalization and deep interest in fostering a partnership with a Brazilian institution.”
Jackie Vogl, assistant vice president for global education, wrote the successful application with assistance from Cody McCabe, associate director, international enrollment services.>
“The staff of the Global Education Office is constantly seeking out educational opportunities throughout the world,” Vogl said. “In particular, we would like to develop additional institutional partnerships that would enhance both the quantity and quality of our study abroad destinations for domestic students.”
Vogl will take the one-week study tour May 5-10 and will visit several cities, most likely including Sao Paulo, Recife, Salvador and Brasilia, she said.
“I want to participate in the study tour to learn about Brazilian higher education, to gather information about Brazilian structures and priorities for partnership building, to discuss partnership ideas with colleagues from the United States and Brazil, and to generate a list of contacts in Brazil with whom I can follow up upon my return to Plattsburgh,” Vogl said. “This program will assist us in identifying potential institutional partners in Brazil, a country with much to offer to, and gain from, the enrollment of students from other countries, including the United States. Many Plattsburgh students have already expressed an interest in studying there.”
