2002 Grad Returns to SUNY Plattsburgh as Assistant to Vice President for Administration
12:31pm EDT, 8 Apr 2014
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (April 8, 2014) — The former assistant director for transfer admissions at SUNY Plattsburgh has been named the college's assistant to the vice president for administration.
Sean Dermody, a 2002 political science graduate, will assist Vice President for Administration John Homburger beginning April 21. He was most recently registrar at Clinton Community College.
“I’m really excited about returning to SUNY Plattsburgh,” Dermody said. “Being away from Plattsburgh made me realize how much I loved it. As a student here, I encountered faculty and staff on a different level. I know the transformative powers Plattsburgh has. And for me to have the ability to play even a small role in that appeals to me.”
As assistant to the vice president for administration, Dermody will be responsible for campus compliance and policy issues, Freedom of Information Law issues and other regulatory and legal issues that may arise.
“I’ve always been interested in legal and compliance issues. One of my favorite classes was Dr. Olivia O’Donnell’s compliance class,” Dermody said. “All the pieces of the job fit; it looked like me; and it appealed to me to re-join the Plattsburgh family.”
Dermody grew up in Vermont but moved to Plattsburgh when his father became food service director for Marriott when the company held the food service contract on campus. He said that when his friends were looking to go away to college, he knew he wanted to go to Plattsburgh.
“I didn’t have to go far away to go far,” he said.
Indeed. In the 12 years since Dermody graduated, he has served as a SUNY Plattsburgh admissions adviser from 2003 to 2007 and was then appointed assistant director for transfer admissions, a position he held through 2011 when he moved on to the registrar position at CCC. He views returning to SUNY Plattsburgh as a return home.
“Plattsburgh is my home,” he said. He met his wife, the former Katherine Morris ’02 G’04, in the Honors Center when he was a junior and she a freshman. “She was in the computer lab there one day, writing a paper while listening to Led Zepplin. I thought, ‘Who is this? I want to get to know her better.’ We settled down here, started a family here.” The couple has a 16-month-old daughter, Margaret Alice.
“We are truly fortunate to have Sean accept this appointment, not only on behalf of the Business Affairs Division, but for the entire campus as well,” Homburger said. “Sean represents another solid building block in the foundation for the future of SUNY Plattsburgh.”
“I am very thankful for who I am today because of the experiences this place had for me,” Dermody said. “SUNY Plattsburgh was very good to me; the people here made a huge difference in my life.”
