Student Magazine Receives All-American Rating, Marks of Distinction
03:05pm EDT, 3 Sep 2014
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2014) — DoNorth: Touring the Adirondack Coast, a print magazine produced by SUNY Plattsburgh journalism students, earned its second consecutive All-American rating from the Associated Collegiate Press.
The All-American honor, the ACP’s highest rating, recognizes DoNorth for its winter/spring 2014 issue.
DoNorth focuses on tourism in Clinton County and the surrounding region and is the official in-flight magazine on PenAir’s Plattsburgh-Boston route.
Funded by the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau and SUNY Plattsburgh’s Department of Journalism, DoNorth is distributed at various Clinton County sites as well as on PenAir flights.
DoNorth’s winter/spring issue, published last December, received a total judges’ score of 520 points, more than enough to meet the All-American standard of 450. DoNorth’s debut issue, released in May of 2013, also earned All-American honors.
The winter/spring issue of the twice-yearly publication received marks of distinction from ACP in four categories: content; writing and editing; photography, art, graphics and typography; and Concept. The judge praised the magazine’s writing and photography, calling the magazine’s photo essay on Ausable Chasm, with text by Jonathan Schmitt and photos by James Heffron, “absolutely incredible.”
DoNorth’s all-student staff was led by Editor-in-Chief Krystle Morey, Deputy Editor Yessenia Funes, Managing Editor Maura Danehey, Art Director Kahla Persell and Photo Editor Natasha Courter.
The SUNY Plattsburgh faculty advisers for DoNorth are Jennifer Meschinelli (advertising) and Luke Cyphers (editorial).
